PingMag did an interview with the creators of the Tenori-on that was overlooked when published, but there are a few interesting tidbits from the interview, like the fact that neither of the creators are musicians.
Yu said it took three years to develop the Tenori-on, and another three to get Yamaha on board with the production process. When throwing around design ideas, shapes like triangles were considered, but appeared too difficult to make usable, so they stuck with the square shape. Other interesting design aspects include making the Tenori wide enough so that the thumbs of the average adult hand meet in the middle of the Tenori when grasped, and that it was never intended to be a user-friendly music machine; it kind of just happened. i dunno how i missed this before this is amazing. I love the visual cues, it adds an entirely new aspect.I never considered synthesizers to be instruments but this could change my mind
@pevans34: You never considered synths real instruments??? You sad, sad man.
It's no shock that a step based sequencer was created by "non musicians" just stick your hand randomly in a ceiling fan and you can create your own.
*by the way, I consider sticking your hand randomly in a ceiling fan music.
href="#c5584850">pevans34: I fail to see how this redeems/changes your opinion of the synthesizer. You probably never considered electronic music to be music.
Just do us a favor and stop listening to Yani.

The world needs more musical instruments designed by non-musicians.
And more cars designed by non-drivers.
And more computers designed by the Amish.
Um, I dont see this as revolutionary. I love it, dont get me wrong, but its been done before.

@discounteggroll: Maybe it's the pretty colors. Maybe it's the hypnotic tones. But, I have to get one of these things.
had a go at one of these in the design museum in London. It was possibly the most confusing thing! I could get it to change, but not much, it still pretty much sounded the same, just slower or more/less complicated.
I want one of this Tenori-On music, like the developers i´m not a musician either, so this thing is perfect for me!
It would be like playing lumines on and on, in other words, it´ll be awesome...
