When it comes to laptop bags and cases, there are traditional-style ones, modern ones and downright unusual ones... we can't decide which to put the new BUILT Laptop Backpack into. It's almost a traditional rucksack, made out of fancy water- and stain-resistant neoprene, but it's shaped to hug your back like a half a bulletproof vest. An image helped by the fact that it's available in Police black or Army green. It does look kinda comfy, and it's got three pockets: for 12-inch to 17-inch laptops, accessories, and whatever fits in the shoulder one. Available now, in two sizes, for $80. [BUILT via Be Sportier]

We'll all dress like this in the year 2000.
Sorry, but this does not count as a "wearable computer".
@strider_mt2k: I totally agree
but on another note, this is by far the hottest laptop bag, but that would make your back sweat a lot. It's basically skin-on-skin....
Even more, laptop-on-skin
but still, I think I would buy one without a second though if I was it in a shop and price was a little less..
It would probably make more sense, if laptop reviews also made mention of their respective abilities to stop bullets.
@Crescent: I think the neoprene would wick the moisture away. It could also be ribbed or something similar on the underside to suspend it off your body to allow air movement.
On the plus side, I could see using this in environment when you don't want to be SEEN having a laptop bag. Combine this with a loose shirt or jacket, and you could walk w/o anyone knowing you had a $1000+ item strapped to your back.
Not very discreet, and there's the sweating problem... but this design is probably the one that makes the laptop weight less.
Closer to your back, and small enough to fit only the laptop and few other things.
I have this huge backpack that alone must weight almost 4 pounds (2Kg) or something, and it is one the lightest I could find.
The ventilation problem may partially take care of itself when you actually put a laptop in it. I imagine that instead of the pack being form-fitting, it'll suddenly look more like a large, flat, rubber-wrapped box strapped to the wearer's back.
Does it float?
@Git Em SteveDave: No. I think the result is that you'd just look like a fat slob in a mumu who looks like he's trying to smuggle a laptop without being noticed.
Compatible with Iron Man suits versions 1 AND 2?
Comment on BUILT Laptop Bag: Water-Resistant, But Not Bullet-Proof One possible great application of this laptop bag would be for those who use motorcycles as it is form hugging and would not create as much wind resistance as do those big bulky backpacks when leaning forward on a crotch-rocket. Not to mention that the water-resistance comes in handy when it starts to rain while riding your motorcycle. It almost looks like this and bicycles was kinda what BUILT had in mind when creating the backpack. Maybe they don't explicitly point to it being a motorcycle or bicycle backpack because they didn't want to narrow the range of prospective buyers. I think when I sell this desktop and switch out to laptop (and switch to motorcycle, gas prices are killing me) I will pick one of these up. I have always been pretty minimalistic and this is the best minimalistic backpack I have seen to date! 10+ on design BUILT!
This will work great when no one can afford gas prices and we are all biking to work.
Just about the thing I was looking for a year ago, when shopping for a laptop bag to use while riding the bike. Price tag is a little steep, but I may consider it.
It looks much more convenient and efficient than the Crumpler bag I have now...
@Hvedhrungr: Yeah, I've been looking for an effective, ultra lite bag for carrying my laptop on a bike too. It beats the Timbuk2 bags I already have. Perhaps Be Sportier will be recieving some of my presidential bribery check...
Sorry.. Built will be getting my ill gotten cash.
@tamoko: The Timbuk2 Commuter is a real good size. If fits a 12"-13" laptop very comfortably, has two side pockets for water bottles and such, and the main compartment holds a lot of junk.
As far as just a little messenger bag goes, I swear by my WNYC bag. Heavy ballistic nylon, good velcro, an iPod pocket, and room to fit a 12" or 13" laptop in a sleeve (for added protection). Plus, it's black and red.
@Git Em SteveDave: No, neoprene is a closed-cell foam, the material being a lot like rubber. It's what wetsuits are made of - and those are designed to insulate you from the cold ocean.
Looks really cool, but I'd definitely have to pass - especially living in Texas. The sweat factor would be a killer.
The bag might not be bulletproof, but a metal cased laptop inside would probably stop smaller caliber rounds. As long as you only plan on getting shot in the back.
This is like Geeky Tupac or Tech Loving Biggie...this isn't right at all.
@OMG! Ponies!:I just looked atthe WNYC bag, not bad... and any cash that goes to public radio is well spent... I'll look around see if WHYY has a bag that might fit my needs.
@superbad: Ceramic plates with a Boron coating. Buy two backpacks and wear on on the front too.
It looks nice... and comfortable... but it doesn't look like it would protect your laptop that well because it looks so thin. What if you forget it's on your back and you sit down on a chair with a back on it, and you crush your laptop? Lol.
Fun idea, except in New York City, this could easily be mistaken for a bullet-proof vest. Geeks with records beware! That's probable cause!
I cary my Hi Tec with suspension strap System, $29.99 everywhere. I ride my bike everywhere since I don't drive since gas prices hit more than $3.70 and i have a gas guzzler Infiniti SUV parked in my house. My Special Edition HP comes with a 12 cell battery and would feel some pressure on my back with the batt sticking against my spinal cord. i just got a FUJI commuter bike for a very good price
Wear it on the front, and you could co-star in the next Eddie Murphy in a fatsuit movie!
don't know why no-one has mentioned this, but it's perfect for riding my motorcycle in to work. Wind on the freeway catches a backpack and blows you all over the place. problem solved.
I would only wear it to the front, i could imagine myself leaing against a wall with this thing on and wrecking my laptop. If i ever save enough to buy a motorcycle, this is the bag ill get.
@OlafGebsite: thats what i was thinking too, i think im gonig to hunt one down
Maybe they can make another one that has the muscle looking or breasts looking front! :) Just a thought.
