An alert AVS forum member posted a cryptic note entitled "Samsung first to lower prices!" I wondered if maybe the member wasn't referring to the Dealzmodo-tastic flat-panel price war that HD Guru Gary Merson predicted. Sure enough, when I cross checked Samsung's most recent MAP pricing on the 5 Series LCDs (a.k.a. 550) with their list prices on Best Buy's website, I could totally spot the $200 price drops that were discussed on AVS. But if the price war is really on, other prices will be dropping. I am only one man, while you, dear readers, are the Giz army—if you spot any other noteworthy MAP or MSRP price drops on TVs now or in the coming days, comment here, or send a note to our tips line. I smell blood, but unlike on Alien Vs. Predator, no matter who wins this war, humanity wins too. [AVS Forum; Best Buy]

Yay! wait.. I already own a flat panel LCD.. Boo! But yay for everyone else! I suspect this is in preparation for OLED technology. time to clear some warehouses.
Ah, the freedom of not owning a TV...
Although I wouldn't mind cheaper screens for my Hackintosh...!
@Hvedhrungr: owning a TV is restraining? If anything its more freedom, since I have the freedom to turn it off and read a book, and the freedom to turn it on and watch it.
You DONT have the freedom to turn the TV on in your living room and watch it.
i'm guessing its probably not a coincidence that the price drops are happening at the same time that people are getting their economic stimulus checks
Alright Giz, price check eh? To the Wal-Mart!
@irfan: just ignore him, he's one of those "oooo i'm better than you because i don't watch tv" type people. I work with one of them, and it's best if you just ignore him. Now the fact that a person who doesn't own a tv reads a gadget blog seems little weird to me, but alright.
Giz army?
@sonicwind: yeah you were voted general remember?
Will this affect LCD monitors at all? I'm building one for school next year. Speaking of that should i go for a 1680X1050 or a 1920X1200? I a'm looking at 22" widescreens, can i get a 1920X1200 in that size (i also want at the most 5ms response)
Keep us updated. I'm on the lookout for an LCD, ready to make that dive. I'm watching Gizmodo for the deal. Thanks, and keep us updated!
@Ryanraven:
Most if not all the panels used in the 22" are 1680x1050. You'd have to step in the 24" to get 1920x1200.
20" 1680x1050 has been great for me. Unless you need that extra screen real estate, I don't think you'd need to go to 1920x1200. But... whatever floats your boat.
Sony's new 46" 2008 model KDL-46S4100 is $1599.99
Last years 46" S model MSRP was $1899.99 and was only 720p. This years 46" S4100 is 1080p, better, and cheaper than last years!
@soymilk: Thats cause no one will buy it. The lower end stuff from them is useless.
@soymilk: Thanks :)
@Smith145:
True, their lower end stuff prob didn't sell as well as the top or mid tier, but what I was trying to say was...
This years low end model is prob comparable to last years V3000 1080p set which was MSRP $2299.99, now available for $1799.99. Its a mid tier tv for the price of last years low tier stuff.
Samsung released a good portion of their 2008 model tvs earlier this year. Sony is just now releasing their tvs, and its around 200 bucks cheaper than samsung's, hence samsung cutting the prices of their tvs to match with sonys discounted new product lines. This price war is prob just for new 2008 models coming out.
amazon has the 40a750 for 1800 vs its 2399 msrp (bset buy) ... 700+ drop!
sorry 2599*
C'mon Sony price drop! -=0
Sony KDL-52WL135 2,999.00 as it always has been at costco. They're trying to say you get $300.00 off but they just raised the price to do that.
