Lenovo IdeaPad Z Series Walks the Performance-Pricing Tightrope

Does Lenovo's already expansive IdeaPad line really need another series? Actually, maybe! Because the new Z360, Z560, and Z565 offer something other IdeaPads haven't, as much: compromise.

A design that's attractive but not flamboyant? Check. Performance options at a wide range of price points? Check, all the way from an AMD V series single-core processor to an Intel CoreTM i7-620M with TurboBoost. Entry-level price point? Well, depends on the configuration, but $650 for a 13-inch 1366x768 widescreen, integrated optical drive, standard array of ports, and Dolby Advanced Audio isn't half bad. And remember: you can always upgrade to that Core i7, Nvidia GeForce 315M 1GB graphics, 8GB DDR3 RAM, 650GB HDD, and Blu-ray. Not too shabby.

Make no mistake: the Z series isn't as flashy as the U series, nor is it nearly as light. The battery life is mediocre at best. But the 13.3-inch Z360 and 15.6-inch Z560 (Intel inside)/Z565 (AMD) might just be worth a look if you want a PC that looks better than it is, and performs better than it costs.
