Now You're Playing with Potato Power!

Seems like only yesterday I was powering an LCD clock with a potato and now Israeli researchers are using a similar approach to create a battery that could help solve the developing world's energy problems.

In this case the potato is boiled to increase its potency 10-fold, before zinc and copper electrodes are inserted to create the battery. The researchers claim the batteries last anywhere from a few days to a few weeks, depending on usage and other environmental circumstances. I imagine in this case bigger is also better, so find yourself a few super spuds before setting out on your own.

Which is the best part, by the way: People can do it themselves. The technology is being made available to those who need it free of charge. Well, that and a few pounds worth of potatoes, anyway. [Engadget]
