Sony figured out how to replace the 22-wire ribbon inside their mobile devices-the one that carries control signals, video, and audio data-with a single copper cable, capable of 940Mbps transmission. That could make for the best cup-and-string phone ever.
The new single wire cable will be most useful in mobile devices with movable parts, allowing for more flexible and durable designs. In addition to carrying control, audio, and video data, the same copper cable can also supply DC power.
Sony says they'll be "swift" in their implementation of the new technology, so hopefully the first generation of two-things-connected-by-a-string phones—or more likely, just-slightly-weirder-flip-phones—aren't too far out. [Sony]
