We've been waiting so long for Spotify to come stateside that the streaming music service has taken on near-mythical proportions. Stream whatever song I want, whenever I want? Sure, right after I re-shoe my unicorn.
Except now, finally, mercifully, the ink has dried on a deal between Spotify and Sony that will allow a limited number of streaming music per month, with an option to pay for an ad-free version of the service. That's one studio down, three to go.
And realistically, Spotify could probably get away with signing just one one of those three before it can safely dive into the US waters: Universal Music Group. Between Sony and UMG, even if Warner and EMI don't come along Spotify would have a robust selection of artists to choose from.
Most importantly, there's now finally a framework in place for this type of deal. And if it's good enough for Sony, there's a better than decent chance that it'll be good enough for all the rest. That's the hope, anyway. [All Things D]
