What Is This?

Stare hard at this photo. Stare really hard. Can you guess what you're looking at? No? Maybe because your eyes aren't working hard enough? Maybe you should squint your eyes? Okay. It's your eyeballs. Your amazing, microscopically-structured eyeballs. Squint harder!

What you're peering at is a slice of the hundreds of millions of rods (left) and cones (right) inside your eyes' retinas. The photo—the first of its kind—was taken borrowing imaging tactics from astronomy, allowing scientists to remove the glimmer from the eye, and could mean great things for eye medicine in the future. The better you see something, the more you can do with it. [via Fox News, Photo: University of Rochester/Biomedical Optics Express]
