If you're finding the 85th procession of the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade to be a little over-the-top, take a moment and enjoy a few minutes of the spectacle from a simpler time when everyone carried 8mm cameras instead of smartphones.

These clips come courtesy of Michael Laca who's been restoring some of his family's classic 8mm home movies, including footage of the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade from November 25, 1954. It includes classic balloons like Felix the Cat and Macy's giant wooden soldier, pink elephants, and of course the float carrying Santa himself. All that's seemingly missing is a little boy obsessed with owning a Red Ryder BB Gun. [YouTube via Coudal]
