It's tax return season! If you've been a good tax-filing boy or girl, you either have or will soon have a nice chunk of expendable cash. If you're not deadset on paying down bills or saving up—and who does that!—now's a great time to get some peripheral gear that you might otherwise never get around to buying. Here are some ideas for indispensable stuff you wouldn't be bothered to buy otherwise.
LaCie Rugged Mini 1TB USB 3.0 External Hard Drive
You've probably been meaning to buy an extra hard drive forever, because we're all digital packrats and you can never have enough storage for movies you will never ever watch again ever. Same here! Now might not be the bestttt time to buy a hard drive, since the Thailand floods from last year are still inflating the prices, but if you can't wait any longer, you should look at one that's basically indestructible and tiny. $140
Nike Fuel Band
It's springtime! Wonderful! But we are all very fat from a sedentary winter full of savory foods. Sad! If you'd like to get back into shape, and you feel that a gadget might help you do that, we quite like the Nike Fuel Band. It's not super accurate, but neither is your goal of being less of an amorphous blob of cellulite, so it's kind of a great fit. $150
If you carry a bag to work or school every day, a good bag can literally change your life. Timbuk2 bags are smartly designed to be easy to use and let you keep all your stuff hyper-organized. Pockets on pockets on pockets! If you've got something to do that requires a lot of gear, you'll feel like a one man army with one of these things. They're pretty pricy, but Amazon's got them for cheaper if you don't need to customize the whole thing yourself. $40-$150
Sonos is one of those special few things that we'd call a Lifechanger. Audio systems in general have gotten a lot more simple the past few years, but none are simpler than a Sonos—especially when you're adding to your system. Get one, connect it to your computer or phone or anything else wirelessly. Get another, connect that too. Sound system by numbers. $300
When is the last time you thought about how you carry your drinks around? Probably never. But you should be drinking a lot of liquid throughout the day, and if you move around a lot, that might involve spilling or messes or a bunch of other inconveniences that this mug basically obliterates. Here, let Uncle Joel explain it better than me. $20
