JK Rowling's new book The Casual Vacancy—her first for adults—is a pretty big deal in the publishing world. So is the Kindle. And that is why it is so very funny and great that the Kindle version of the ebook seems to be a woefully misshapen train wreck.
So this is obviously a file formatting error, and will be cleaned up quickly, and anyone who bought it will be able to download a new version. It only seems to be affecting the e-ink version of Kindle, not the tablet or phone app version. And yes, old fogeys will come out from under their stacks of old issues of Paris Review to yell and point and fulminate about ebooks being total shit. But! Buuuuuuuuuut. Let's please not lose sight of how extremely funny it is that Amazon, newjack top dog bookseller, botched the biggest book release this year on its flagship device? Because it is quite funny. Update: It got fixed. Amazon contacted us saying, "We have worked with the publisher to correct this issue, including for customers who have already purchased the book. The updated file is already available for new purchases and we will make it possible for past purchases to get the updated file in the next few hours."
