This Is Not a BrainS

You are not looking at a human brain. Nor for that matter are you looking at the brain of any living creature. In fact, this is a scanning electron microscope image of a tiny little seed of a plant called rumia crithmifolia.

Captured by British photographer, and professor, Rob Kesseler, it was created by sputter-coating the seed in gold and then painstakingly photographing it using a scanning electron microscope. The green coloring was then applied as part of the post-processing of the images.

His images are amazingly detailed, and show off the incredible intricacy of the natural world. Below, though, is my favorite: a picture of a humble strawberry, in all its seedy, hairy glory. Wonderful. [Rob Kesseller via Design Boom; Image by Rob Kesseller]
