Spendthrift Darling Vizio Crashes the 4K TV Party

Vizio, purveyor of modestly price electronics that are actually, you know, good, is joining the 4k fray. Its XVT series comes in 55, 65, and 70-inch, eyeball-broiling models.

Other details are scarce at the moment, but we do know that the XVT will also have a minimal-bezel design that you'll admire, and 3D capabilities that you'll rarely use. There are no pricing or availability details available yet, because nothing in this world is either certain or easy. But given Vizio's sterling reputation as an everyman brand, combined with the smaller sizes, presumably means the cost will be coming in significantly under the $25,000 and $20,000 (respectively) 84-inch Sony and LG offerings.

Also—and since we're going to be seeing a lot of 4k TVs this show it might be easy to forget—it's important to remember that there's still no 4k content available to watch, and there won't be any time soon. Paying any amount of money for these sets this year is basically like special-ordering an "I HAVE TOO MUCH MONEY AND I DON'T KNOW HOW TO SPEND IT" plaque. For twenty grand. It's also unclear exactly how more effective 4k will be than 1080p on a 55-inch display. There'll be a difference, sure, but how much of one?

We'll be going hands on shortly, and hopefully getting some more answers.
