This visualization from NASA's Goddard Institute for Space Studies was just updated with new data from 2013, which tied for the hottest year since 1880 at an average of 58.3 degrees Fahrenheit. A whole 1.1 degrees warmer than the mid-19th-century baseline. In the context of the grand trend laid bare in NASA's visualization, it's easy to see how it won't be a record-holder for long.
