Apple’s first big “original” content announcement was the upcoming new
advertisement original series Planet of the Apps. Now, Apple is snatching up “Carpool Karaoke,” the creative work of James Corden and The Late Late Show, to become a new 16-episode weekly Apple Music exclusive.
If you haven’t seen it, the entire idea is getting a famous person to drive around belting tunes and just being silly. The most popular video, with 119 million views, features Corden driving around with Adele. Of course, this idea isn’t that far removed from Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee or any number of viral YouTude videos. So in a sense, the show is a clone of a clone of a clone, not unlike the rumored iPhone 7.
Strangely, The Late Late Show will continue to do its own “Carpool Karaoke” segments as usual, so really Apple is just borrowing the idea. Then again, Apple’s been taking the unoriginal tack of stealing others’ ideas and making them its own for years.
