This Oculus Rift-Powered Light Cycle Sim Is the Ultimate Arcade Game

The Oculus Rift hasn't even made it out of beta testing and it's already changing the world for the better—at least for one dedicated developer. He's integrated one into an incredible, full-scale Tron: Legacy light cycle replica. Strap on a headset and hop aboard, we're going racing.

It's called the RiftCycle Project. Devised and constructed by indie developer The Arcade Man, this one-of-a-kind arcade cabinet integrates an Oculus Rift headset into a hand-built Light Cycle arcade chassis running a custom-compiled Light Cycle Simulator developed by the Portuguese startup Overflow Interactive.

"How many of us dreamed of being inside a game, this is a fantasy in the mind of all the nerdiest geeks," The Arcade Man explains on his site. "Thanks to an amazing little device that allows us to be "inside a game" and the project I've developed in the last month, I think I can say that we are in a very good way to materialize a great part of Kevin Flynn's dream…"

We've all dreamed it, sure, but Arcade Man actually went and did it. Then he posted an exhaustive collection of photos documenting its construction on his site. It's fascinating to watch the cabinet come together and must be even more fun to actually play. Unfortunately, the system is currently in its early prototype stages, and there's no word when/if it will ever become commercially available. [The Arcade Man via Prosthetic Knowledge]
