Fusion Media Group is looking for a Reporter for a new environment-focused destination site.
As part of Fusion Media Group, this site will join a collection of sites on Kinja that reach some 100 million unique visitors a month — more than one-third of all Americans. We publish some the web’s most original media brands, including Gizmodo, Kotaku, Lifehacker, Deadspin, Splinter, Jalopnik, The Root, The Onion, The AV Club, and Clickhole.
The ideal applicant is super-curious, passionate and can explain the environment and related topics in a way that's entertaining and engaging, issues that might, in lesser hands, come off as boring or pedantic. Our Reporters have opinions backed up by facts; a witty, conversational writing voice; and an unstinting editorial eye. In short, you geek out on the environment and related themes. And you should be completely comfortable with an entrepreneurial editorial process—from pitch to publication to promotion—and have a deep desire to help build a compelling new, topical multi-media ecosystem for Fusion Media Group.
As Reporter, you should:
- Have at least 2 years of experience writing, primarily for an online publication, on the environment, science and related topics
- Be organized, detail-oriented, and a careful writer
- Respond nimbly to news events with related feature
- Be capable of turning around stories ranging from short news pieces to longer features at a quick pace.

FMG’s new destination will engage and inspire today’s generation by exploring the emotional intersection of humans and nature. It will have a clear focus on the environment zeitgeist. The future of our planet and the health of society are intertwined now more than ever, and FMG destination will offer distinct angles on all nature-related topics. It will seek to tell untold stories that resonate with super-fans, and doesn’t lose sight of the emotional connection we share with the rest of the planet.
The environmental news space is a messy ecosystem, composed of sites that specialize in everything from hard news to fun animal videos. What’s missing is a hub where young people can go to get quick, fresh commentary and insight into the issues that matter to them. This would be a site about the environment that’s actually for and about people. So, nature, for humans.

Provide digestible and smart takes of daily environmental news that are both engaging and insightful.
Work with those with subject matter expertise, to provide thoughtful and under-covered stories in this space.
New scientific studies are published every day, so we’ll distill these to make sure readers are up to date on factors affecting their environment, in visually compelling and interesting ways.
Build a broader environment-centric ecosystem around www.ProjectEarth.us, our existing multi-media effort in this space, which will remain as a robust core section of this new destination.
Compelling video series’ that will also focus on wildlife, sustainability, and activism, connecting with a young, internet-savvy audience on- site and on social platforms.
