Beauty Editor, The Root
The Root, the leading news site for African American influencers, is seeking an editor to lead coverage of fashion, hair and beauty through the lens of black women’s empowerment.
The Root reaches millions of readers per month, focusing on news, culture, politics and entertainment that is of interest to a black audience, written in a wry, frank and, at times, in-your-face style. We don’t mince words when speaking the truth to power.
As part of Fusion Media Group, The Root is part of a collection of sites on Kinja that reach some 100 million unique visitors a month — more than one-third of all Americans. We publish some the web’s most original media brands, including Gizmodo, Kotaku, Lifehacker, Deadspin, Splinter, Jalopnik, The Onion, The AV Club, and Clickhole.
The Beauty Editor would write, edit and produce content for The Root’s new vertical as part of a growing editorial team. S(he) would also know the journalism ecosystem around this topic and be able to find, attract and engage relevant freelancers.
The ideal applicant is super-curious, a strong writer/editor and passionate about the beauty industry, but not a cheerleader of it. This is someone who can celebrate what’s worth celebrating and decisively critique the common issues around race, body image and sexuality that exist in the cosmetics and fashion industries.
The ideal candidate should have strong journalism credentials, with at least 2 years of editing experience in a fast-paced digital newsroom. The ideal candidate should be comfortable working independently and in a team, and have strong problem-solving, communication, leadership and organizational skills. Multi-media skills, particularly video and podcast, would be highly prized.
