@imTheKing: (Disclaimer: note that I do acknowledge the fact that Zune is a great PMP, although I don't feel it's any more worthy of a purchase than an iPod.) Reply

@imTheKing: They're at the very least on equal footing, I chose the zune mostly because of the desktop software, but also the overall design of the device and wifi. I personally think the zune is superior design wise and interface wise, but they both share the same amount of polish. Reply

@telepheedi: nah I hear you. They are totally on the same page. Feature wise, no doubt the Zune has better/more features but my biggest complaint is that Microsoft has no clue how to do marketing and on top of that, they never really bring anything that's "new" or "fresh" to the consumer. Not that Apple is bringing something new (lets face it, everything's stolen from another), but they know how to take something that has great possibilities, and provide it to the consumer. Thats really where Apple shines. If Microsoft could cut into that small area (which isn't easy to figure out), they'd be right along the same page. Reply

@imTheKing: I will say that I did not really think that the 1st gen Zune was anything special. Small storage size, bland navigation options, but had a radio. Not enough reason for me to pick it over an 80G Ipod video.

However, seeing the new Zune's, I wish I had one of them, even over an Ipod touch. Although I do love the touch's interface, the Zunes is very nice as well, with large storage options, and not bound to itunes, which IMHO runs like garbage at times.

... Although, I think it would be an even greater Idea for Google to make some wort of partnership with some company that can make the hardware to support a PMP that runs on the Android OS. Reply

I own neither unit, nor do I care to (just wouldn't use it enough). But I do work at an evil CE retailer, so deal with both frequently. I think aside from better marketing allowing people to feel like the iPod is something special, a big reason that iPod > Zune is accessories. Not cases and such, but you can plug an iPod into basically any car stereo, home theater system, or boombox on the market today AND be able to control it with the device's remote.

Lazy people with iPods rejoice. Reply

@nickpadovani:

I've had both and I have to say I prefer my Zune, it's one of thew new ones, and while the radio holds no special place in my heart because the reception in the middle of Nowhere, KS is terrible, I find the interface to be as good as iPod, while the asthetics rape the iPod into the ground. No more annoying, glaring, white screen, and the wifi support is great. I have had two instances of my Zune slowing down, but it resolved itself in a couple seconds the first time, and I just restarted the second time. I'd had several instances of this on my iPod, and I always had to drag out the manual to remember how the shutoff sequence went. Overall, both are great products, I just think that with Wifi, the multiple format support, not running with itunes (which since the 8.0+ upgrade, has run like soggy toast, and yes, I run both that and Zune software) I prefer my zune. I still have my iPod and think both are great, and I'm sure that apple will find a way through patents and get similar options in the near future, at least on their commercial systems. I know that the iPod Touch and iPhone both have them, but they have yet to incorporate it into the normal systems.

For the record, I have a Zune 120G and iPod Classic 30G. Reply

@nickpadovani:

I use to own a zune but gave it to me GF because of that reason. I can plug my touch into my radio in the car and its easy. I wish you could get Synch, like in Fords, in any car. If my next car is a Ford I'll get a zune again.

@iomatic: You hear the way Jobs reacted during WWDC (I believe) when the Zune was mentioned? He freaked the hell out at it just being mentioned. Not to mention the way he had the volume on the original iPod increased because he's deaf/has bad hearing in one ear. Or the way he refuses to put MMS and Video on our iPhones because he doesn't think it's necessary, and that e-mail -- old school tech that's been around for how long now? -- is somehow the wave of the future. Or the refusal to put firewire on these new MacBooks, a feature that was included on past generations of MBs. How's that supposed to be open-minded?? Reply

@iomatic: Ignoring all of the rest of the idiocy your comment contains, let's focus on the most obvious: Um... you realize it must be this way, correct iomatic? The founders/leadership of a company (not just MS either, this goes for every company large and small, but especially large publicly traded ones) pretty much need to drink their own Koolaid. Reply
