Actually, their complaint and concern IS a very valid one.

Without more information to base your decision, you're going to accept the default pretty much every time. That is just how our brain works.

What many on Giz consider as a "no brainer", really isn't for the average person faced with a technology decision. There is real anxiety caused by needing to make this choice. #browserballot

@Lite: hates Illinois Nazis: I rarely choose the default. When something lacks information, choosing the route to gain more of it should be 2nd nature. If you're not using such a process to make the best possible decision, you're making foolish choices in consistency. #browserballot Reply

@Lite hates Illinois Nazis: Ummmm what's wrong with random order? User A sees IE, FF, Safari, etc. User B sees FF, Opera, IE, etc. #browserballot Reply

@Lite: hates Illinois Nazis: Well then its settled. Mozilla should force the EU to change how human brains work, in order for Firefox to be represented fairly on this browser selection screen. #browserballot Reply

@Lite: hates Illinois Nazis: It may be a real concern for Firefox or it may cause anxiety to people .... it is still NOT valid to sugest that a multiple choice install is flawed because MY product is not first on the list. #browserballot Reply

@SQLGuru: And a random install "I'm Feeling Lucky" option for the comedy option. Reply

@Lite: hates Illinois Nazis: But who says first is "default?" I assume there is research to show this?

And why is Microsoft ordering it by company name alpha instead of browers name alpha?

This whole situation is stupid. #browserballot

@Falsoman: I didn't say it was honest. I said it was a valid concern for Firefox. Not that their concern was in the best interests of the customer.

Setting something as a "default" effectively precludes choice for roughly 80% of people.

Your brain processes information in a certain way, and lacking data up-front before confronted with the decision, it's difficult to make a choice. If you are not required to make a choice, you will more often than not accept the default. #browserballot

@Lite: hates Illinois Nazis: @Lite: hates Illinois Nazis: I hate Illinois Nazis! There's a helpful More Info button below each browser.

And really when you get down to it, what difference does a browser make for a non-tech savvy person in the first place? The person who picks Safari because it is first isn't someone who is going to go "You know, I like the sandbox structure in Chrome," or "Oh man, why WOULDN'T I want to run Greasemonkey scripts? Firefox it is!"

Sure, you could make a case for stability and proper rendering of sites, but for most people, like you said, it doesn't matter. They pick whatever comes first.

And besides, if we let everyone pick Firefox and use adblocker, what would happen to internet commerce without all those idiots buying ways to brighten their yellow teeth and get those abs they've always wanted! Think of the lost commerce, man! #browserballot

@CrimsonKnight13: So, if you're given a choice on a form regarding painkiller after surgery where the default is Ibuprofin, and checking the checkbox gives you heroin instead. And you know nothing about the difference between heroin and Ibuprofin, you would choose heroin?

Got it.

Most people make foolish choices consistently. Which includes you, and I. It's just that most of the choices you make on a daily basis have little chance to kill you. #browserballot

@Lite: hates Illinois Nazis:

I look at this like a menu: I pick what I like, not just what's first on the menu. I think that most non-techie users will probably do things the same way and pick IE because they're familiar with it - it's what they "like."

I don't pick the first item on the menu at some restraurant because I'm not familiar with it, and I wouldn't pick the first item in a list of browsers because I wasn't familiar with some of them either.

I would predict that since most users would be at least a little familiar with IE, that's the one they would pick if they weren't familiar with some of the choices.

@enm4r: This was my first thought. Program name makes more sense to me - no one call it Apple Safari, its just Safari. Same with IE, FF or Chrome. #browserballot Reply

@Lite: hates Illinois Nazis: I don't see how choice #2 means I'll automatically chose it. Just because its the only other choice doesn't mean that I'll jump on it. I don't see how your logic is sound. #browserballot Reply

@IsabelCordus: Right but you are assuming that you can read the menu in a meaningful way. If someone asks you what kind of oil do you want in your car, and says "this is the default...." Most people say "OK". Then there are people when offered, a choice as a "premium" they will take that. Without any knowledge that it is actually any better than the non-premium item. They just feel better because they pay more. (See: Monster Cable)

@CrimsonKnight13: You just said, you tend to not take the default. Which is it, do you make an educated decision? IN this case, you don't have an education about the decision you are making... Or, do you not pick the default?

Both of you are arguing against me, because you don't want to be generalized. And really, who does. However neither of you appears to have done the research. The first thing I did was link to someone who HAS done the research. Maybe you should go give it a shot, and ponder what he's saying about how the human brain makes decisions. #browserballot

@Lite: hates Illinois Nazis: I tend to take a long time to decide when I don't really know what I'm going to choose. Yes, I don't like to be generalized at all. I just do my best to bring an alternate view to the table even when research shows how things work MOST of the time. We all have the ability to break the mold & do something different. #browserballot Reply

@Lite: hates Illinois Nazis: Ordinarily I might agree with you, but here, there is no default. You have to click "install" on whichever browser you want. Users can't "just click next", because no option is checked by default. Reply
