Hate to rain on the hybrid hate parade but there are a bunch of myths about the Prius being "bad for the environment," which have been debunked here: [www.pacinst.org]
For example, hybrid haters often slag the Prius because some of the nickel used in its batteries comes from a Canadian nickel mine. The same nickel mine that opened in the early 1900s and supplies nickel for the steel industry to create chrome.
Other than its batteries, for which Toyota pays $200 per battery to recycle them, the Prius is a regular car. So if its manufacturing creates CO2, then so do other regular car factories.
It's interesting to me, too, that you don't see and read the same nastiness about other hybrid cars like the Ford Fusion and Escape hybrids. Why is that?

@islandgirl45cv001: Is it just the production of the batteries that is considered more harmful to environment? I know some batteries cause a good deal of pollution in both creation and then recycling later on. Or if they have to be dumped as well. I had an old Saturn that got 50mpg on the highway if you drove right.
I know the F1 teams were upset about KERs due to all the restrictions and paperwork alone in the EU for recycling the batteries (they only ran them for one weekend, and then had to dispose of them). One team joked that the paperwork would cause more pollution than not running the device. #prius Reply
