Android apps are kinda take the same route as Nintendo games are. First party releases are top-notch (Goggles, GVoice, Listen, Maps), a handful standout third party apps, and the rest are incomplete or crap.

Even the Facebook App is in major need of some polish.

@phi: At risk of sounding like an apologist, I just got an update to the Facebook App last night that now makes it usable. It's still not as great as the iPhone app (missing chat and the ability to favorite certain people you commonly communicate with), but it's usable now.

Which says something. Prior to this, I just went to the text-based mobile site instead.

@phi: I think that the scale and speed with which apps can enter the market is much faster than iPhones. Especially if Google is trying to push this OS to as many phones as possible. The more phones, the more apps.

I've got places like Gizmodo and CNET to sort the lumps of coal from the diamonds so I'd rather have the impending massive quantity to sift through, which is the way Android seems to be going.

@OCEntertainment: Agreed. Not finished, but useable.

And, dude, you should've been going to the touch site, touch.facebook.com, not the mobile site. I actually still go there for some things due to increased functionality. In fact, in the instances when the app boots you out to the web, it really should send you to the touch site.

@jakemg: I actually knew about the touch site, but personally, I prefer more info over a prettier interface. And sometimes I just wouldn't get notifications I knew were there, or I'd have a hard time finding my way to an event's page (which happens to be the easiest way for me to organize one of my movie nights), so intentionally stuck with the regular mobile one. But yes, it does deserve a mention for other folks.

And, also yes, why doesn't the app direct to the touch site? You'd think it'd be less of a jarring transition for the user, and you know any Android phone is touch-capable. Odd.

@OCEntertainment: Hell yes. I updated the app but didn't notice anything different and I couldn't figure out what people were talking about. Turns out I ended up having to uninstall and reinstall for the new version to take effect and IT IS AWESOME. Reply

@OCEntertainment: I feel the same way...but its far from done. You can't even tag friends on albums, and albums in the news feed still go to the mobile browser. Reply

@NorwoodIsMyHero: Totally agree, if developers see that there is a market for their apps, then we'll get better apps. But as it stands right now, a lot of the stuff out there is incomplete. I do love Google's apps though Reply

@OCEntertainment: Thanks - did not know that there was an update floating around (one of the things that annoys me about Android, I get no heads up about any updates to my apps unless I go looking for them...but, then, I used to find the iPhone method annoying, too, so perhaps I'm just easily annoyed...). @Lupus_Yonderboy: Odd. I tend to get updates pretty regularly. Though I don't tend to get notifications of updates if background data is disable. Maybe this has something to do with it? Reply

@Lupus_Yonderboy: That is weird. Mine pops up in the notification bar when I have updates for apps available. Reply

@OCEntertainment: Hrm. That is odd. I have never gotten a notification that an application is ready to upgrade, but I get other notifications all the time. What phone are you using? I have the Sprint version of the HTC Hero, maybe it's something that got borked with the addition of the Sense UI? I'll take a look around my settings - it would make me sooooo happy to get notifications in the bar. Reply

@Lupus_Yonderboy: I'm using the G1, so stock Android.

I just took a look in the Market app and, when in the Downloads section, there's a menu setting for notifications. I'm running 1.6, though, so you're probably running a different app than mine. Good luck settings hunting.

@Lupus_Yonderboy: I get updates to apps on my droid eris all the time, and it's basically the Hero on verizon. Reply

@OCEntertainment: If the update isnt working, remove it. I've heard of several that have the issue, I myself have not, yet on the Droid, I have the option to remove the update. Reply
