My mom just turned it off. Well, not really. She wasn't very tech savvy so she would just turn off the TV. If we were in the middle of some important game we'd just hit the puase command and leave the NES on until we could get back on it later.
Until she wisened up and just started to yank every single cord from the back of the console and would lock them somewhere we couldn't get at them when she didnt want us to play Reply

@NorwoodIsMyHero: The old lock away the power cord trick. My parents did that with the TV cord when TVs had detachable cords. Then they bought a new one that didn't have a detachable cord so they put a lock on the door to the TV. Well being mischievous imp that I was, I took the hinges off the door and swung it the other way. I'm pretty sure they never knew.

@lukeadams: My parents loved to lock rooms in the house. The only thing that achieved was it taught me how to pick locks.

@lukeadams: My grandfather got pissed at my dad when he was kid, so he actually cut the power cord off the T.V, a bit extreme maybe, but it got his point across.
My dad just used to use the belt on me, worked out fine, of course I didn't think so at the time. Reply
