Seriously, old MF devices are usually really cheap (inexpensive) and hardly make any margin in sales. There is absolutely NO incentive to keep owners of such devices happy or to try to update drivers to keep a model alive.

huygir commented on LeapFrog Leapster2 and Didj: Handheld Edu-Gamers For the Pre-iPod/Cellphone/DS Demographic P.S. It would be great if these companies followed Apple's lead on how to use their web site for marketing/selling. Here you have a great announcement about some upcoming stuff - too far off to be of any real value to consumers (if it was a Christmas release, maybe it would be different). If you go to LeapFrog now and look for "Didj", what do you think you'll find? Anyone?

huygir commented on LeapFrog Leapster2 and Didj: Handheld Edu-Gamers For the Pre-iPod/Cellphone/DS Demographic The difference will be what it always is - the games. There is a dearth of truly educational games on the mainstream gaming platforms - they don't sell to the "older" gamers. The Leapsters et al are a value-added entry in the gaming space for that sole reason.

My 4-yr-old daughter plays almost everything on a regular basis - leapster, VSmile, GBA, DS, Wii, GameCube, 360, PC and a bunch of those single game joysticks you plug right into the TV - anything that's fun. She can have as much fun on her "educational preschool" games as on the more difficult puzzle, action, party games (she doesn't do FPS yet :-).

Frankly, I think my kid has learned as much from the "right" games as from any other venue. Preschool kind of takes it slow (if you have kids, you know what I mean), but kids can learn some things much faster with the right motivation. My kid loves games, so I'll get her anything that provides good games - ESPECIALLY if they are fun games that will actually help her learn.

Sure, lazy parents will "abuse" technology for selfish ends, but that doesn't diminish the value of the technology for its intended purpose. However, I don't think it would take much to boil you in your skin which of course would result in blood everywhere (not at all sure about that blood-to-water thing).

Oh, and exactly what sort of omniscience do you have to claim that Jesus could not have changed blood to water? Since blood is about 83% water, it seems like quite an easy feat frankly (certainly for the one who created it in the first place or don't you read your bible)?

huygir commented on Bug Labs' Open Source Gadget Store Now Open I don't get it. It seems so cool in concept, but the BUGBase is the only really cool part... I can do geolocation of images/video with cameras I already own (with much greater resolution). I already have one of those, too (3MP), so that won't be any fun.

huygir commented on 75FPS Snowball Fight Filmed With Red One Video Camera Shows Snowy Decimation I need to see the "raw" footage. I saved the QT file and played it full screen (1920x1200). It isn't sharp, but I'm betting that QT. We won't know how good this is until we can see a uncompressed or lossless compressed version (which I'm guessing my PC might not even be able to play, so what am I thinking?)...

A bit dark, too, even for a snow scene. I think the RED is an awesome device - I don't think this footage shows that (but it's the Interweb's fault for not being able to handle the raw data).

huygir commented on MacBook Air Unboxed, Compared to Sony VAIO @strider_mt2k: Agreed. That's cheesy, especially for Apple.

As much as I like to carry a cool laptop, I will never get past the issues of non-user-replaceable critical components (e.g., memory - which can go bad; battery - which is just plain stupid I always carry an extra battery "just in case" I don't care if it claims 10 hours of uptime; HD - these go bad, too, plus it's always nice to be able to take advantage of faster, bigger or solid state at my discretion).

BTW, I currently use one of the small AlienWare laptops (don't remember the model) - it has kept me happy for quite awhile and it's looks are still "cool". Oh, and I did my own memory upgrade of course.

huygir commented on Steve Jobs: "People Don't Read Anymore," Android Is Going Down Then why are B&N and Amazon Books still doing good business? If anyone could see a downward trend in reading, it would be Amazon anyway, right? And yet they are banking on a minor shift in how we read - not that we read at all.

I read all the time - everything from Sci-Fi to technical reference manuals. It's still easier for me to scan my (personal) library shelves for a trusted reference book than it is for me to surf around and hope that what I'm getting tid-bits of isn't total crap.

Case in point: all the stuff we post on this darned site - how much of it is truly useful?
