leMel commented on Space Is Full of Crap Many of these objects are small paint chips (non-magnetic, for the mouth-breathers).

Yes, the graphics are misleading in that they are not delivering the information visually so much as they are trying to "shock you" by showing big clouds of debris. (See Tufte for a good discussion on these space debris images, which seem to pop up about once every two years for some reason).

I too wonder about the motivations for that.

Of course, it isn't the size or mass of the paint chip, it's the mass plus the velocity (not to mention your own velocity) that turns every one of these objects into a soul-liquifying bullet.

It's the velocities that account for concern over a frequency of intersection events, even though we are dealing with a lot of space and a relatively small number of objects. And if you are talking a space walk, tiny, fast, suit-ripping matter matters.

At this point, it is impossible to continue exploring space without leaving a trail of *something*, so what about that?

leMel commented on Capturx Digital Pen Turns Jotted Notes to Text I think some of the statements being made here based solely on price comparisons between CapturX and LiveScribe's PULSE aren't fair...you have to really look at what each can do, and they are aimed at two very different sets of usage patterns:

One of CapturX's big deals is how well it works with OneNote. It also has bluetooth for dockless synching. And the way it works with blueprints/GIS maps is really well thought out. Their notebooks are rugged and have waterproofed paper - good for field work.

The LiveScribe seems aimed more at student note-takers, a similar but clearly different set of usage scenarios.

CapturX's charge lasts about a week. I'm sure the LiveScribe can't possibly do that well with the addition of audio recording and playback...

If the LiveScribe can integrate with OneNote with the same robustness (CapturX even keeps track of multiple paper notebooks and what page you're on in each, etc!), then I would consider myself 100% sold.

I need a smart digital pen in the field - I'm not a student.

Curious, what did you think of the old (Atari) Hotz box or the Tenori-On, two musical toys in a similar vein (though with less cheesy demos, perhaps)?

Also, the algorithmic aspect reminds me of Korg Karma technology. People who don't understand the Karma engine often accuse it of being 'a bunch of presets' as well.

There is a long history of these kinds of technical music toys.

A) At this point, the best future would look quite boring (sustainable, natural, locally-sourced, modern-chic)

B) ...and the worst future would look quite scary (climate change, haves vs. have-nots, homeland security, unchecked sprawl, modern-bunker)

leMel commented on Livescribe Pulse Smartpen Digitally Copies Notes, Records 3D Audio I like this. I create everything digitally, except for what I write in a Moleskine. Now, if I had a pen like this, the pocket sketchpad would be covered, too.

Hopefully the *pen* is decent...there had better not be a cheap Bic in the barrel or a goopy gel writer either - that'd be a dealbreaker.

And...I'm sure the ink 'refills' aren't cheap. Know how much digital ink costs? That's why printer cartridges are so expensive!

Also, can you write without inking? It would be cool to jot a note on my hand and have it in the pen, but not on my hand!

leMel commented on Why Does My Cable Company Force Me To Subscribe To All These Stupid Channels? Well, part of the reason channels are sold in groups is to support the media sell packages that the channels' owners can offer to advertisers.

Remember, if they can't sell ad space, your channel dies, no matter how many people watch it.

For example, if you *really* like Comedy Central, having MSNBC piped to you as well (for the combined ad sell package) is subsidizing keeping CC alive.

A lot of my favorite channels are in that 'long tail': they wouldn't survive on their own ability to sell ad space So yeah, give me the other stuff too, as long as it keeps BSG on the air.

And did you know a lot of cable systems let you hide the channels you don't want to see from your menu? I only display the 10 or 12 I'm interested on Dish!

I LOVE TV-B-Gone.

BUT...I think this prank doesn't fit with the original ethos of TV-B-Gone, which if I remember was more about giving bystanders a equalizer against blaring TVs dominating public spaces like restaurants or meeting places.

Someone at giz blew it, got banned, it's over.

What's truly weird is that they bragged it; they probably should have reported on it 'third person'.

But, in strange a way, it actually shows more integrity that they came forward and said 'we did this' without prompting.

Just hope no one gets litigious (or bans TV-B-Gone - better go buy one now...) and all we be fine in a minute.

Now, if they get recognized and stopped at the door to MacWorld tomorrow morning, *I'm* gonna laugh!
