<![CDATA[ludwigk commented on Minimum Wage Soars To $6.55, Working Poor Still Too Impoverished To Celebrate]]> @tli415: @Silversmok3: @milkcartel: 29 States have already enacted minimum wages that are higher than the national minimum wage, and there is a direct correlation between states that have a higher minimum wage than the national, and states that have a stronger relative economy.

The sentiment that raising the minimum wage will "instantly" result in job loss is highly refutable on the grounds that the majority of workers at or near minimum wage are already making more than the new national minimum wage. I highly suspect that Silversmok3 read a pamphlet on Econ 101 one day, and decided he understood the national job market.

I'm not saying its causal, but contrary to traditional economic theory, increasing the local minimum wage did not destroy the low-end job market, or cripple consumer spending, or create a welfare state of unemployed. As tlia415 said, her in San Francisco, the minimum wage is $9.14. Practically everyone that I know, even people working entry-level retail make more than this. Food service positions also make more than this. So, I dont really know what role a national minimum wage plays, but it is meaningless for all Californians, and people in the 28 other states that have a higher min. already.

<![CDATA[ludwigk commented on U.S. Foreclosures Double: 1 in Every 171 Households Affected]]> @Bladefist: Stop spreading FUD about Al Gores house. He was completing a 3-year renovation on his 80-year old house to get LEED Gold certification, indicating a level of efficiency and greenness that only a handful of homes in this country has. George's house doesn't qualify.

George built his house new with a lot of great eco-enhancements, and that's a wonderful thing. Al Gore had to retrofit them in, and it took years to complete.

100% of his power consumption is from green power sources, such as solar, wind, and methane. All of the excess emissions from his lifestyle (I'm assuming to the best he can calculate) are offset by green credits, so that his consumption is carbon-neutral.

<![CDATA[ludwigk commented on How Long Can McDonald's Afford To Keep The Double Cheeseburger On The Dollar Menu?]]> @RabbitDinner: I think at some point wendy's used to suck a lot less. I used to eat there regularly in Maine through 2002-2004. Never had a problem with their food.

We kind of stopped eating fast food for a few years, then, after moving to california, and some really long work days and being too tired to think of anything better to eat, we went to Wendy's a few times. The stuff was unbearable. I really don't think I've changed that much in terms of my taste preferences, I think the Wendy's here is just awful.

<![CDATA[ludwigk commented on How Long Can McDonald's Afford To Keep The Double Cheeseburger On The Dollar Menu?]]> @Mr. Guy: I once ordered some kind of value combo from McDonalds, but I wanted it without the drink. The cashier said they knew how to ring that up, but it ended up being more expensive than the combo with the drink by like a nickle. I was pretty angry, since not giving me something should cost less. Or, I could have asked for a coke and dropped it in the trash can, which does noone any good.

But then, for about 6 weeks during the summer, I had the "Mulan meal" which was something like a small drink, fries, and 4 nuggets for a ridiculously low price (no toy). I'd supplement with another 4x nuggets for $1, and its was still getting lunch for like $3.18 per day.

Of course, we'll never know since the project was axed and never released.

<![CDATA[ludwigk commented]]> Not every Xbox game is compatible? You're confused again. MS said "Some key titles would have BC built in", but they never promised or even considered full backwards compatibility.

Sony was the one that promised 100% backwards compatibility, said it a million times, and paraded it around as a key selling point over the X360. Then they couldn't deliver it, then pulled the hardware that made it possible and stated that it wasn't important.

I plan on taking the HDDVD drive apart at some point to make a blue laser pointer.

<![CDATA[ludwigk commented on KFC's "Vegetarian Sandwich" Isn't, Stop Kidding Yourself That Fast Food Restaurants Have Vegetarian Options]]> @Jetgirly: I cut red meat from my diet for over two years. Ate a lot of chicken an vegetarian dishes. There was no newfound mental clarity. When I returned red meat to my diet, those were some of the most productive and mentally stimulated periods in my life (I was completing a physics major). To me, the presence or lack of red meat made no difference, so I'm calling shenanigans on you on that one.

<![CDATA[ludwigk commented on KFC's "Vegetarian Sandwich" Isn't, Stop Kidding Yourself That Fast Food Restaurants Have Vegetarian Options]]> @ekthesy: ...and eating a veggie patty that was fried in a vegetable oil fryer, which previously contained chicken does not directly contribute to the death of an animal. Right?

There are a lot of different ways/reasons to be a vegetarian, which in turn affects how you execute your own restrictions

1) There's the ethical "animals have souls" reason.
2) There's the nutritional "meat is unhealthy" reason.
3) There's the environmental "meat consumes too many resources" reason.
4) There's the personal "Meat is icky, I'm a douche" reason.
5) There's the religions "God told me not to eat that" reason.

and I'm sure many more.

The worst are people who refuse to eat things that have trace amounts of something that contained animal near it, or that previously were used to prepare animal products before undergoing industrial sterilization. It demonstrates a fundamental misunderstanding of reality.

But this article is also junk. What the hell kind of Vegan would go to a Chicken Restaurant for any reason? Vegans shouldn't eat any prepared foods that came from any non-vegan establishment.

Yes, I've got the 200/month package. Yes, I can easily afford their unlimited plans. No, I will NOT pay more for unlimited texting. The per kb charge of SMS is outrageously beyond obscene and I will not fuel that market. But, I will game the hell out of it using my AIM app if I can.

<![CDATA[ludwigk commented on Dead Rising Wii Screens: Where Did All The Zombies Go?]]> For me, Dead Rising really epitomized the "Next Gen" gaming experience by leveraging all the extra horsepower into a game mechanic and experience that was not only captivating and fun, but also that is not easily replicated with "current gen" amounts of horsepower. Porting it to a "current gen" powered system makes no sense. You lose the entire scale of standing in the courtyard with hundreds of threats, or driving in the underground tunnels, mowing down thousands of zombies.

<![CDATA[ludwigk commented on Why Most Organic Milk Stays Unspoiled Longer]]> @ludwigk: Appendix:

Since moving to California 2 years ago, I've become lactose intolerant. I have no idea why. I blame it on a lack of Maine milk products.

]]>
<![CDATA[ludwigk commented on Why Most Organic Milk Stays Unspoiled Longer]]> @dianabanana: This is probably a matter of what they're feeding their cows. We feed our cows mostly corn and soy, but if their diet balance is different, that will produce different milk.

All those fantastic butters and cheeses that they make in Europe are from grass-fed cows, so the flavors become specific to the kind of flora that are in a particular region.

In Maine, the milk there was just exceptionally good. There was the normal brand, Oakhurst, which was so good that the first thing my GF and I would do when we got back from grocery shopping was drop all the bags, break open the milk and down a tall glass of "New Milk".

For special occasions, when you needed to raise the bar (like making icecream), we'd get Smiling Hill Farm's milk. Oakhurst was good, but Smiling Hill was unbelievably good. It was expensive, and came in glass bottles you had to wash and return, but you got what you paid for.

<![CDATA[ludwigk commented on Starbucks Charged Me Extra For The Vanilla In My "Vanilla Latte"]]> @mac-phisto: But what if you're a stingy bastard and already don't tip? (I am of course describing myself)

I tip at restaurants, but I don't see the point for counter-based fastfood joints like Starbucks. They don't have a tip-based wage, and are subject to normal minimum wage. I know minimum wage sucks, but the tip-based minimum wage is like 1/4 as much here, which is an entirely different matter.

<![CDATA[ludwigk commented on Sony Knows What Went Wrong With the PS3]]> @mattius: I'm just amazed that Tretton would finally turn around and start being humble, and addressing the HUGE problems that have existed with the PS3.

- It costs too much.
- It touts features like Cell and BluRay which are irrelevant to this generation of gaming.
- It is a pain to develop for
- Sony made 10^2834992348 promises about the PS3 which they could not keep.
- It took a year longer to get to market than X360, with no perceivable gaming benefit.

It's a refreshing change from the usual "Impenetrable Wall of Arrogance" that is Sony's PR.
