permissionmag commented on 3M on Verge of Releasing Mini Mobile Projector, Possible $300-$400 Price Tag Remember when cameras were introduced as add-ons to phones in America? It wasn't that long ago - around 2002 if I recall. You could buy a camera as an attachment, about the size that the projector is here, and stick it onto your handset. Now, it's ludicrous to imagine a mobile phone without a built-in camera.

I suspect we'll see projectors as standard, insanely cheap features of most phones by the time Obama's up for re-election.

permissionmag commented on Extended Car Warranties Are A Ripoff I can't begin to count the ways I'm happy that I bought an extended warranty. I paid about $1000 on my new Mazda in 2004 to bump up to a 10 year/100,000 mile warranty.

I've since saved at least $4,000 in repair costs, and that's before you consider the peace of mind that I've had as a result as well.

Maybe it's just because I put more miles on my car than some people, but it was not a ripoff in any sense.

permissionmag commented on PSP Concept is Slick, Slidey Goodness It's beautiful, but it retains one of the main problems of the PSP. The clamshell design of the DS makes it easy to use when you're on the bus or the train. When you're in the middle of a game and you have to get up, you just shut the lid and it's straight to sleep. Open it again to keep on where you left off with no delay.

The clamshell design also protects the screen while it's in your bag or pocket, and the DS in general has the kind of sturdiness that means you won't freak out if it drops three feet.

permissionmag commented on Video: First Hands On Sony Ericsson's XPERIA X1 Nice skin on top of Windows, but it really bothers me when engineers or marketers talk about putting a "user experience" on top of their products.
User experience isn't something you paint on afterwards, it is the entire experience of using the product, from the way the keys feel, to every part of the OS, to the quality of the speaker.

I did appreciate the thought that went into placing the icons in an arc for one-handed use. The human hand was meant for that kind of movement, something the iPod click wheel designers understood, but which was lost in the iPhone.

One good design decision does not make a product, however. Looks like more corporate compromises from Sony Ericsson.
