that aside, i need to know how reception is in new york. sprint blows here on long island, but dad is only switching to AT&T if it works where he does...even if i pay the bill myself, which i (for data, at least, let the rents take care of minutes) plan on doing. anyone know where i can get street-level coverage maps, or if AT&T gets a good signal in the 40's in manhattan?

<![CDATA[rimplestultskin commented on Used Cars Are More Eco-Friendly Than Hybrids?]]> buying a used car that gets 32 highway miles, fits in any parking space, turns like a go-kart, feels like a BMW and still gets you laid (my girlfriend loves my car) for half the price of the prius: priceless.

my '04 mini. best car i could have possibly gotten.

and, according to this article, more eco-friendly than buying a new prius.

<![CDATA[rimplestultskin commented on Solar Panel-Powered Prius in 2009 Confirmed]]> @Captain Bringdown: there is a camry hybrid. however, the prius looks the way it looks because toyota wants to draw attention to hybrids, and sure-as-shit-ugly gets a lot of attention!

and the aptera had this idea first, if i remember right. the logic behind it probably is that the AC is a major power drain, so letting the solar panels run the AC puts that much less strain on the alternator, which means the engine gets to keep more of the power for itself.
however, toyota should also put in a system where, if the AC is off or not running full blast, the solar panels can recharge the battery. because that also means the alternator is less necessary, which goes back to the more power idea.

with this, toyota might be able to put the same amount of power out from a smaller engine (and a less active alternator) or put out even more juice from the same engine. ladies and gentlemen, i present to you the prius sport sedan! it can actually keep pace with your grandma's civic (or, in my case, grandma's beat up taurus with a broken front bumper), along with giving you the illusion that you're helping save the earth!

<![CDATA[rimplestultskin commented on iPhone OS 2.0 Unlocked]]> @Vibhorsir: apple's terms and conditions are a major limit. plus some developers don't want to pay the $99 a year for the right to upload apps.

app store's an awesome idea, but it isn't limitless. plus being able to throw in prepaid cards while abroad makes roaming cheap as hell...orange has a prepaid plan in england where you're paying 6 pence (12 cents, more or less) per minute to call the US from anywhere in england. i'm going tomorrow, if i can get my stupid fucking nokia 6600 to work (it won't power on, but the battery can hold a charge, it's the stupidest thing), i'm taking it with me on that plan.

]]>
<![CDATA[rimplestultskin commented on TeleNav Confirms iPhone In-Car Navigation App]]> @Leonard Nimrod: they might just give you the app for free or for some nominal see, and then prevent you from using it without a subsciption password.

they can sell or give the app through app store, and sell the subscription on their own website.

unless apple threw something into the T&C's, then i can definitely see telenav doing that.

...that aside, where's the tomtom version at? my dad has the tomtom go 720 and it has a much nicer interface than telenav...isn't apple a fan of really nice interfaces?

<![CDATA[rimplestultskin commented on iPhone 2.0 Software Review: Forget 3G, It's Code That Counts]]> and, my opinion on the new software: i already planned on getting the iPhone 3G (my girlfriend has the regular iPhone, and it's great, but EDGE is a pain in the ass if you're watching youtube videos or listening to music over the web) and now that i see this, shit i want this phone. there is not a single thing missing, hardware-wise, that i actually give a rat's ass about, except for maybe expandable memory and battery, which i can live without. and hopefully, between apple and the developers, every hole in the software will be fixed.

]]>
<![CDATA[rimplestultskin commented on iPhone 2.0 Software Review: Forget 3G, It's Code That Counts]]> such-and-such application wants to use the GPS feature that you've already said you want to give it access to. cancel or allow?

although, come to think of it, a lot of phones ask you if using GPS is ok per app, even if it's turned on. only E911 uses your location without asking you, if apple is following what other manufacturers are doing. slight annoyance, yes, but apple thinks that they're looking out for your privacy by doing that. let them have their fun.

]]>
<![CDATA[rimplestultskin commented on Late Arrivals Might Get Stuck With White iPhones]]> @bobdobbs: that's the way to do it!

i, for one, think that getting the color you don't want is an early adopter tax, and i'm glad as hell that if i even go iPhone, it won't be until august.

i want the phone, but i can wait a month if it means having the right color for the next 2 years.

that's just fucked up. that means that they can adjust your pricing plans, even if you switch phones without telling them?

...good thing i'm starting fresh as a new AT&T customer, assuming i pick up one of these bad boys. because i'd be one of those assholes who'd get unlimited EDGE, get that price grandfathered in, and then ste...i mean, complete an offer to recieve a free iPhone 3G.

<![CDATA[rimplestultskin commented on Dan Lyons quits Fake Steve Jobs before the real Steve Jobs drops dead on him]]> oddly enough, yesterday on the news they were talking about what would happen if the real steve were to retire. i really hope that jobs is around for a while....now that ballmer has complete control of microsoft, OS X isn't just an attractive system, it's my new way of escaping hell, and i can only see 2 possible outcomes for a post-jobs apple.

1) jonathan ive becomes the big boss and keeps the company in more or less the same direction it's been going in so far, because somehow apple always seems to find something cool to put in a device, and jonathan ive always finds a design that people cream their pants over.

2) epic fail. apple without steve jobs, and without promoting ive to take over jobs' responsibilities, will stop innovating, and will stagnate.

<![CDATA[rimplestultskin commented on Question of the Day: Would You Save a Gadget From a Burning Building?]]> no gadget is worth risking my life, although the data on my hard drive would be a massive bitch to lose. somehow my parents decided that, since i got the computer with the built-in media card reader, the family photo album became my responsibility, and so far i'm having trouble backing up 160GB worth of family pics for free....not to mention a few weeks' worth of music.

come to think of it, if it was a small blaze and wasn't likely to injure my vitals or my nads, i'd probably go in to save all of my hard drives, and (i know, not a gadget) my sneaker collection...everything else is replacable, and can go to shit until insurance steps in.

<![CDATA[rimplestultskin commented on Interesting iPhone App Roundup]]> @donlphi: funny, i once had the idea that in iTunes, you should be able to hide certain apps from the main menu, but keep them in iTunes so you could re-add them later. especially since mozilla is probably going to jump at the SDK, and though safari already runs really well, who knows what an iphone version of firefox could do.

<![CDATA[rimplestultskin commented on Leaked Sprint Roadmap Shows Palm Treo 800W, BlackBerry Curve And Possibly the HTC Touch Pro]]> @ChrisandHisKicks: anything from HTC in the next few months is probably going to be the diamond or the touch pro, but the dual is a possibility.

<![CDATA[rimplestultskin commented on Leaked Sprint Roadmap Shows Palm Treo 800W, BlackBerry Curve And Possibly the HTC Touch Pro]]> too little, too late. and too many motorolas.

]]>
<![CDATA[rimplestultskin commented on Interesting iPhone App Roundup]]> so far, briefcase, facebook, possibly AIM (i want to see the same UI as they have in the texting app) and μSirius are the ones that really pique my interest. oh and anything that emulates classic NES or atari games: pong, i'm looking at you.

and if jailbreak works side-by-side with the app store, life as an iPhone owner is gonna be fun as hell. i love, more than anything else in the software world, having the freedom to run "legit" and homebrewed apps alongside each other. besides begging apple to release OS X for generic PCs, but that one always seems to end in anguish.

]]>
<![CDATA[rimplestultskin commented on That Blurry Shot Really Was New MacBook Pro]]> if this at all translates to a price-drop in macbooks, or a clearance sale on old MBPs (neither of which can happen, but i'm a dreamer) then i'm happy. otherwise, the MBP looks fine as-is and redesigning it is a waste of time, unless the redesign comes with breakthroughs like doubled battery life, cooler-running processors or $1-per-GB flash SSD (which is a pipe dream).

]]>
<![CDATA[rimplestultskin commented on iPhone Apps Can Be Dragged and Dropped Into iTunes Without Going Through App Store]]> @pzich: apple made it seem like even the free apps have to be DRM-encrusted, so no dice. yes, i said encrusted, not protected.

and at everyone worrying about paying twice for an app: doesn't apple license iTunes purchases to up to 5 computers and unlimited ipods?

]]>
<![CDATA[rimplestultskin commented on Rogers Caves, Offers 6GB iPhone 3G Monthly Data Plan for $30]]> yeah good for the early adopters, but rogers is still fucking you brutally if you sign the contract from september onwards. i love you canadians, but your phone companies abuse the balls off of you, therefore i can't ever afford to live among you and still have a cell phone with internet access.

3 year contract, and no way of getting fair pricing unless you sign up before september....not even AT&T is doing that. so much for any plans of moving to mr. rogers' neighborhood.

]]>
<![CDATA[rimplestultskin commented on iPhone Gets Voice Dialing With iSpeak]]> running in the background could get annoying....what if you're shit-talking someone in your contacts list, and your iPhone decides to call that person so they get to listen in on your conversation?

bad idea, fonix. just stick to a standalone app that voice dials when you tell it to, not one that constantly listens to you.

<![CDATA[rimplestultskin commented on First Pics of Touchscreen BlackBerry Thunder in Action]]> for once, a verizon phone without a shitty UI.

i'm going to tell all my verizon friends to get this just because the interface on.....every single one of their other phones sucks.

]]>
<![CDATA[rimplestultskin commented on BlackBerry Thunder Has Multitouch, Though Still "Not Ready" Say Rumors]]> @duffyanneal: HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA.

i'm not a fanboy of either phone, i use a 3-year-old sanyo ever since my samsung A900 broke.

i think that blackberry sees what the future holds, and is going for it, but apple is COMPLETELY unmatched in the user experience. their UI is as close to perfect as any man-made interface can get, but RIM has the (kinda) right idea.

maybe a smartphone that impedes on the iPhone's market will convince apple to add more smartphone features onto the iPhone itself. RIM could force apple to give us, say, cut-and-paste and MMS, as well as plain-old-cool features like a video camera and haptic feedback.

i, for one, applaud RIM's effort. not only to bring an iPhone competitor to the table that sucks even less than the instinct (which only sucks a little bit), but to bring a phone to verizon that doesn't have a god-awful UI that makes me want to burn my eyes out. but come the second shipment of iPhone 3G, and the end of release-day hype, apple will probably have my number either way.

<![CDATA[rimplestultskin commented on NASA Shows Off Fireworks In Space]]> @godwhacker: oh, definitely a 396.

]]>
<![CDATA[rimplestultskin commented on BlackBerry Kickstart Flip Phone Only $49]]> as for aesthetics....it's a fatass, but otherwise, it isn't bad looking at all.

the UI looks slick. i like it...not as much as the UI on a certain designed-in-cupertino phone, or the samsung F series phones, but better than, say, any motorola, and the cheaper LG and samsung, and (talking about looks, not functionality) nokia series 60 phones.

overall: blackberry has no experience making flip phones, but this is decent for a first try. next time, make it thin and give it 3G (in other words, give it to someone other than t-mobile).

<![CDATA[rimplestultskin commented on DeLorean Shows Up at Nike Hyperdunk "Back to the Future" Sneaker Premiere]]> typical UNDFTD: really exciting sneaker release, but half of the guys lined up are just there to sell the shoe for triple.

as a sneakerhead, i have to say that sneaker investors really get on my nerves sometimes. these were already overpriced enough from nike and UNDFTD, the reseller assholes made it worse. luckily, the hyperdunks are so fugly that i wouldn't get them in ANY colorway.

]]>
<![CDATA[rimplestultskin commented on Back to the Future McFly Sneakers Unboxed, Going for $2,000]]> @kOtic: surely you haven't yet been introduced into the world of sneakerheads.

well, let me open the door for all of you.

über-rare nikes can easily go for four figures. unfortunately, and any limited edition nike hyperdunks (and most limited edition jordans) will show you this: many of the four-figure resales are on ASS UGLY shoes. honestly, steve ballmer can probably make better looking shoes than the hyperdunks.

however, if nike had actually released the air McFly and not 2015-inspired hyperdunks, i'd be more than happy for drop 6 benjamins on a pair...knowing that i could then very gently wear them (you should see my jordans...every pair of jordans that i've ever paid for out of my own wallet, i'm more careful than a pansy in a lion's den when i wear them), turn around and sell said pair for 3 grand after the stores sell out and a few dumbasses scratch up their pairs, making a near-deadstock-condition pair harder to find.

speaking of which, gawker needs to start a sister site for sneaker culture...or better yet, in gawker style, one blog that makes fun of other sneaker culture blogs.

<![CDATA[rimplestultskin commented on AT&T's Official iPhone FAQ: Pricing, Upgrading, Help Vids and a Lot More]]> wait....they're trying to sell an unlocked iPhone for a $400 premium when apple's allowing unlocking programs in the SDK? i feel terribly sorry for whoever gets suckered into that.

that's almost as bad as when (i think this happened, i dont know for a fact) orange tried to sell unlocked iPhones in france for 1000 euros (1500 dollars, for those of you who don't know the exchange rates), when the regular iPhone was a full 400 euros (600 dollars) less.

<![CDATA[rimplestultskin commented on Prince Charles' Modded Aston Martin Burns 4.5 Bottles of Wine Per Mile]]> @godwhacker: the rest of the year, he's getting chaufferred in his other cars, which from what i hear, include a biodiesel-powered jaguar, a biodiesel-powered audi and the like. that aston is just a weekend cruiser for the prince.

although the ethanol-from-wine powered idea seems to be just for the environment: wine is more expensive per gallon than gasoline or E85 ethanol, but yields a lot less energy. unless the EU quotas force the winemakers to give away or heavily discount their surplus, which would make this a cool idea.
and it would get more than 10 MPG if he were to use hard liquor in the tank...the more concentrated the ethanol, the more power can come from the same amount of fuel. i can see a future where popov and everclear are used the way octane boost is now.

<![CDATA[rimplestultskin commented on Canadians Write Angry Letter to Steve Jobs Over iPhone Plan in the Great White North]]> @geowrian: the only thing apple did wrong here was make only a GSM version of their phone. as those of you who live in canada have just informed me, rogers "owns/shares network coverage with/something like that" fido, which is a damn shame because rogers now controls canada's entire GSM business, and the CDMA companies can't support the iPhone, so an iPhone fanboy or girl in the great north is stuck with their ass located due north of ted rogers' phallus.
and of all the apple fanboys i know, one of the biggest is canadian. and i don't think he's gonna be happy when he sees the pricing here.

]]>
<![CDATA[rimplestultskin commented on Hey Commenters, Can We Have A Talk ?]]> well, given that i can still comment, i guess i was forgiven for my remarks on the "iPhone in canada" article.

so this isn't directed towards me, i hope.

but i shall be careful to follow these rules.

]]>
<![CDATA[rimplestultskin commented on Canadians Write Angry Letter to Steve Jobs Over iPhone Plan in the Great White North]]> @beyondthetech: that's all well and good to think about, but the reality is that rogers just likes to screw its customers. i have a lot of friends who live in various parts of ontario (especially toronto suburbs), and the ones who have phone bills to pay are not the most pleasant people.

and @ianmac47: then they come home, and they either get wallet-fucked by rogers anyway because they'll still charge out the ass for 3G, or they go to fido which, to my knowledge, doesn't have a 3G network to speak of.

plus, isnt an unlocked iphone somewhere in the realm of €1000? i know, for one, that 1500 dollars is a lot to pay for a phone that goes for about 300 with a contract.

also, at anyone who took my eskimo reference as offensive: i apologize dearly. my friends who are canadian tend to laugh at it, but if you guys don't like it, i'm done saying it. o, mighty banhammer, spare me, as i have apologized to my neighbors to the north.

]]>
<![CDATA[rimplestultskin commented on Canadians Write Angry Letter to Steve Jobs Over iPhone Plan in the Great White North]]> oh, and don't banhammer me for double posting, but my point is to write the angry letter to the rogers CEO. yeah, el jobs has a tendency to be a douche, but this issue is for once out of his control.

]]>
<![CDATA[rimplestultskin commented on Canadians Write Angry Letter to Steve Jobs Over iPhone Plan in the Great White North]]> don't shoot the fucking manufacturer. i have canadian friends, and from what i understand, rogers always fucks over the customer when it comes to internet-enabled devices, no matter what phone they buy. but apple had no choice.....bell and telus don't support GSM as far as i know, and fido doesn't get as good coverage as rogers.
