weatherman commented on MicroFueler Home Ethanol Pump Unveiled, Ready For Pre-Orders It's an interesting idea, but I'm not sure about the practicality of it. Sort of like home brewing, you don't really get a cost advantage over just buying it from a company that can benefit from economies of scale and advanced technology. Unlike home brewing, there's nothing unique about making your ethanol at home. Unless you generate a lot of sugar waste somehow, like if you're a confectioner with a lot of unsold rock-candy sitting around, I'm not sure this is going to be a cost-saving or environmentally friendly way to produce fuel.

weatherman commented on Toyota Prius: The Silent Killer Strikes Again Y'know, based on previous stories about how silent hybrids are I did a little test to see if I could hear a car's engine when idling or moving at low speed. Turns out with most cars it's pretty hard. Econoboxes tend to be louder because they don't insulate for sound the way the more lux ones do, and the sporty ones often have been tuned to let you know they're sporty, but mid-priced, efficient sedans like the Accord are pretty damn quiet most of the time.

So what are we supposed to do? Set minimum sound levels for cars? Have a little ticker from the speaker on the side of the rearview mirror? Put playing cards in the wheels (as others have playfully suggested)?

The whole thing is absurd and makes me a little mad, both at the media that hype this sort of thing and the folks (and legislators) who want to make this world just one big padded playground so no one ever skins their knee again.

weatherman commented on First Person R/C Plane, Almost as Good as Actually Flying I feel like we just saw this footage on Gizmodo not too long ago. Not the plane stuff, but the car footage. Was that a different product?

The opportunity for remote controlled plane dogfighting makes this very desirable. If I had kids I would totally pretend to buy this for them and then tell them they weren't responsible enough to use it.

weatherman commented on Wii Fit To Little Girl: "You're Fat" @Foxstar Sixtail: according to this chart, which seems to be the common system, she'd be well within the norm or even underweight for that height.

I think this is one of those cultural things that are bound to happen with Japanese products here. Americans are sensitive, sensitive about being sensitive, and overprotective of their sensitivity. And we're fat. So of course being told we're fat is going to cause some people to get all up in arms - both those who are and those who aren't. My guess is that the Japanese would in large part just laugh it off, whether they were fat or not. If you're comfortable with yourself, and you know whether you're fat or not, you're not going to care what a game tells you.

weatherman commented on HTC Census Device Revealed in New FCC Filing @apeguero: that's absurd for a couple of reasons. First, our government is huge, and many things that it uses are not made in the United States. Even if we do have the ability to make any particular product here, it doesn't mean that we have the capacity to meet the demand and buying only American would sure result in much higher costs. Second, programs that favor buying only American actually make for a less competitive America overall; propping up industry results in lower quality which overall makes us weaker against foreign manufacturers. I'm in favor of protecting American companies against unfair competition (foreign interests that are subsidized or allowed to violate labor and environmental standards) but to only buy American just because it's American does nothing for America in the long run.

weatherman commented on Nokia's Plan to Conquer the U.S.: Product Spam @LJKelley: subsidized phones acutally push up the price of phones and plans for everyone because they encourage high MSRPs and create a non-competitive marketplace for hardware and service.

I think Nokia is riding the trend of more and more consumers wanting to not lock-in to a two-year contract. From what I can tell, they've been trying not to get exclusive deals with carriers and instead going direct to consumers. And the more that GSM takes hold, the more people are able to do that and will have the option of just buying a phone direct from the manufacturer. I'm hoping that Nokia jumps on Verizon's new open network push as well. More open market place and less oligopoly is better for consumers all-round.

Wait a sec here - you're saying it's the same artist who did both? And you're still running this story? And you're saying that adjusting the headline to say it "looks like a rip-off" somehow makes this article defensible?

Is Gizmodo's fear of being wrong so strong that it can't admit it totally miffed? Seriously, this is Fox News/National Enquirer/Endgadget level of stupid.

If Gizmodo knows that there's no copyright issue here for whatever reason, there needs to be a retraction. Full stop. Claiming that you're just repeating a rumor is not a defense.

weatherman commented on Israeli Military Guardian Vehicle is Like the Batmobile Without Batman Driving @Mandatory_Field: Um, isn't that the point?

I think lethal autonomous weapons ought to be banned outright, just like landmines. Even non-lethal robots that have lethal options with human intervention raise concern. We have a hard enough time distinguishing friend from foe when it's an on-site human behind the trigger: remote and robotic is just a recipe for civilian deaths and fratricide.

Wait, is it fratricide if it's a robot doing the killing?

weatherman commented on Proposed Gas Tax Holiday Panned As Gimmick; Also, Water Is Wet I think the supply and demand argument holds some weight, but I think the better argument is that oil companies already know that they can charge $3.50+ a gallon and they're doing everything they can to keep prices high (like taking refineries offline etc) and a little tax break like this would affect prices for about 4 hours before Exxon just slapped another $0.18 on their wholesale price. It's like cigarettes; when the state governments started taxing the hell out of cigarettes, tobacco companies actually lowered the price per pack so that people could stay addicted. And now they run two-fer pack deals all the time to get around the taxes. Maybe if we want gas prices to go down taxes should go up... or maybe I've just been reading too much Freakonomics...

Anyway, it's good to see so many people at a car enthusiast site, who (myself included) generally ogle cars with single-digit mileage, see this as a thinly veiled credit for oil companies and not a boon to the working man. And kudos for Obama for not pandering.

weatherman commented on Next Generation Prius Hybrid Is Bigger, More Powerful, With More MPG @robinandtami: It's exactly that kind of "it works for me so it should work for everybody" kind of attitude that pisses me off. What gated community do you you live in where the average family can have three cars? Nevermind whether you actually do live in an area where that's true, why do you assume it's true for everyone else in the country? What about single parents? What about people who live in large cities? What about people without health insurance? What about people who have a household income less than $50,000? That, by the way, is most of America.

No wonder people think that hybrid drivers are smug - that kind of "let them eat cake" attitude just shows how divorced they are from the reality of most of America.

@arbeck: well I never said anything about 4 kids, but while we're on the topic, what makes you think you have the moral authority to tell anyone how many kids to have? What is this, China? We don't have an overpopulation problem in the US. In fact, we have an underpopulation problem. That's why we've been letting so many immigrants into this country for so long; we need them to grow our population and keep our economy moving. Once again some smug-emitting DINK tells everyone else how to live their life, nevermind that your experience isn't universal.

weatherman commented on Putting Video Cameras in the WRONG Places (VERY NSFW) In a situation like this I'd usually be the first to ask "where's the Giz?" but that seems unnecessary, for obvious reasons.
