Here at Virginia Tech all the engineers were required to get tablet PCs and we use a similar program called Dyknow. We can take notes on top of our professors, which is pretty cool. There's also ink that only shows up on the professor's screen, which forces us to pay more attention. There are a bunch of other cool underutilized programs for tablets.
@DrBoom: You just contradicted yourself. You said that you have no idea what I was talking about, and then immediately said you "rooted the **** out" of your phone to get those 3 gigs of apps.
Well, I have news for you. Most people don't have the stones to root the **** out of their phones. Some of us don't like the idea of voiding the manufacture warrantee on our phones.
@vmlinuz: To be fair, this thing really doesn't have much inside it, and no special innovative engineering - almost any plastic box shape costs the same as long you make 50K of them.
I'll take the thinkpad tablet I just ordered that comes with an ips screen, full keyboard, and wacom goodnees. Sure it costs more, but it's also, like, a real computer...
@osiris73: Actually, I didn't follow one of the links on the article, which led (no pun intended) me too: "No lead is EVER contained in any of my work.. All soldered components are removed in the process of cleaning."
Granted, that is good, but I would be more wary of endocrine disruptors from Tetrabromobisphenol A: When this is used traditionally, there isn't a high risk factor. However, this is not traditional, and one could introduce this into their body through the dust produced from playing a pick. It's a losing battle in my opinion... In general, Bisphenol A has permeated our industrialized society completely. It's already creating hermaphrodite frogs!
@Segador: the thing is that design, although pretty, is not to practical. My shelves/spaces are not really designed to hold something like this in a which would create a aesthetic tv center, which would deem the aesthetics of this box useless.
@dallasmay: You've mentioned that twice, and I have no earthly idea what you're talking about. I've got something like...3 gig of apps on my G1's SD card.
All of the hardware out has a limit based on the onboard RAM, but it's not 256mb across the board, and anyone with the stones can, and has, rooted the **** out of their phone the minute it came out of the box, so...hello Apps2SD.
@Sandeep Murali: You make some good points, especially in regards to your "productivity" tag reference and HTC's stance with WM. Now, with that said...
You make a ton of invalid points based on what I'm guessing is conjecture, and assumptions about me, while never answering any of my questions from the previous post. While I DO use a Android phone now as my primary device, I never said they were going to only make Android based devices moving forward. :/ I've actually used WM and definitely see the draw there, it's just not my cup of tea. I also never argued that Windows Mobile wasn't productive or of any value to any manufacturer (that's an argument you're having with yourself, all by yourself). My argument was one based on numbers and cost, and how it's just plain foolish to dismiss the cost vs savings value the Android platform inherently brings to ANY device manufacturer competing/looking to start competing in the smartphone space (HELLO Dell, also It's a FREE cutting edge smartphone OS!). The smartphone space is super competitive with established and entrenched contenders (like say, Nokia) getting their asses handed to them quarter over quarter by the likes of relative newcomers like Apple and RIM, who are also changing the way the financial world sees and marks success in that sector of the CE space (with market share vs profit per device).
I think what you've failed to see/acknowledge is the shift in focus occurring at HTC's core (as you mentioned above). While they may have started out as a smartphone maker solely focused on productivity as evidenced by their choice of Mobile OS (WM), their new emphasis and shift to Android (covered here on Giz a couple of times) indicates a move away from niche market/specialty boutique market device maker to mass market player. While there was a time that productivity was their core focus, I don't necessarily feel that that is the case with them anymore. Now, I'm not saying they're completely moving away from WM, however in it's current incarnation it's no longer their primary focus either for obvious reasons. Need more proof? Look at their Corporate tag line and corporate ethos in regards to device making for that (some would say it's the polar opposite of what WM has come to mean to people who have used it)...
As to your comparison to the PC market, well that's just plain retarded or a straw man argument at best... Please refrain from saying your using my logic. The only thing the two markets have in common is that Microsoft is a competitor in both of them (if you even want to call them that at this point). What's WM's worldwide market share at this point btw? It may have been relevant if Windows Mobile shared the type of market share in the mobile space that it does in the PC space, but it doesn't. They're two completely different beast with very different market demands. See how dumb it is to make that comparison now?... If you wait a couple years we may see what's happened in the PC world happen in the mobile world, except with Android (a FREE OS) as the established OS of choice...
With all of that said, please take a moment to take off your green tinted fanboy glasses and smell the reality of what's going on in the (mobile) world...
@Giz-Guy: What's innovative about paying people for information?
And "deliberate misinformation" would be very easy to weed out. First, thanks to profit, far more people will submit real information than false, and second, it's unlikely you'll get the same false info from more than 1 source (or a few working in concert), which would be swamped by the amount of legit data.
This contest sounds pretty dumb to me. It had a very predictable finish, and because the best crowd sourcing tools are the largest, every team has access to identical tools, which no proprietary way in which to use them.
@almondrickrossroca: Awesome fact. Now how much do the think the world gives back to the USA? Oh yeah they give back complaints about the USA and no one else in the world who gives them anything. Even in the UN the USA far far far surpasses the rest of the world on support, and Japan (no permanent seat might I add) gives 2nd.
America didn't invent poor people, how did they get to poverty when 100's of years ago there was no such thing? (rhetorical, but an interesting thought)
