It's official. Apple has sold 100 million iPods. According to the press release, this isn't just some round number. Apparently, 100 million units sold in five and a half years makes the iPod "the fastest selling music player in history." As if that wasn't enough of a potshot at Sony, makers of the now-forgotten Walkman, the press release goes on to quote Sony recording artist John Mayer, who sings the praises of the little white devil.

Here's what Mayer's publicist said he said:

"Without the iPod, the digital music age would have been defined by files and folders instead of songs and albums," said John Mayer, Grammy Award-winning singer-songwriter and guitarist. "Though the medium of music has changed, the iPod experience has kept the spirit of what it means to be a music lover alive."
