Could the Palm Pre's Weakness Be Its Battery?

Pre Central has confirmed that the Palm Pre's battery will be identical in size to the Centro's, meaning that it will likely be limited to a modest 1150mAh-1350mAh capacity.

Given the large, ultra-sharp screen, graphically intensive OS and constant requests to its tightly integrated online services, one would expect that the Pre would be something of an energy glutton—at least moreso that the Centro and 800w, which share its battery. Given that even the Treo Pro, with a 1500mAh battery, isn't good for much more than two days of regular use, it looks like the Pre might fall into the iPhone/G1/Storm trap of requiring a full charge every night, or worse.

For reference, the iPhone's battery is a more generously apportioned 1400mAh unit, where the G1's power comes from a sad little <strike>1000</strike>1150mAh lithium polymer. PreCentral deduced the Pre's 1150mAh figure from the existing capacities of this battery type, whereas PalmInfoCentral was told directly by a PR rep to expect 1200mAh.

The news isn't all bad though, as there are already a plethora of cheap aftermarket batteries that were designed for the Centro and 800w, and will therefore fit the Pre. Additionally, if you're upgrading from another Palm device you'll be able to carry your current batteries as a backup. [PreCentral via PalmInfoCenter]

Palm Treo Pro Coming to US Through Sprint?

If Sprint's website is any indication, and it probably is, the Palm Treo Pro will be arriving to the service sometime in the near to far future. There's no formal page for the Europe-only handset at this time, but it's been spotted in a product drop-down menu (pictured here). If you've been waiting to upgrade your Palm on your Sprint contract, know that the currently available 800W is basically the same thing. Both handsets run Windows Mobile and feature a 320x320 screen, GPS and Wi-Fi. The Pro is just a bit thinner with a nicer battery.
Palm Treo 800w Gets Bluetooth Voice Dialing Via Software Update

One caveat is that you'll need to have the TREO800w-1.03-SPNT as your current "Software Version" under your About screen, so if you don't, you'll have to update to that first. What's the point of using your Bluetooth headset in the car for safety reasons when you have to look down at your phone to dial anyway?
Palm Treo 800w Prematurely Sold at Sprint Stores for $350

At least a few Sprint stores loosed Palm's Windows Mobile-powered Treo 800w early, for $350 with a two-year contract and rebate. It's still $600 without. Specs confirmed by field reports: Wi-Fi, EV-DO Rev. A, GPS, 320x320 screen and a 2MP camera. The keyboard is apparently improved, with a lower profile, which goes with the 800w's thinner design. Maybe if you're nice, your local Sprint store will let one go now too. Yeah, this spyshot (courtesy of aliased citizen Shadowmite) of the finished Treo 800w shows the prototype was pretty spot on with the button layout of this WinMo phone. While unconfirmed, the 800w is expected to run WinMo 6.1 on a 400 MHz processor with 128 MB of RAM and have 256 MB of flash memory. It's also rumored to introduce a few firsts for the Palm brand — namely EVDO Rev.A, GPS, and Wi-Fi.

Shadowmite also says it has a micro USB connection, which brings Palm out from the proprietary connector rock. It may be incremental, but it's good to see Palm playing a bit of catchup with the smartphone heavyweights.
More Treo 800w Details Possibly Leaked

There's been a slow trickle of details on the upcoming Treo 800w, but this poster on WMExpert's forums seems to know a little more than everyone else about the phone. He says the 800w will look like a Palm Centro with rounded corners and thin body. It will ship with Windows Mobile 6, but be upgradeable to 6.1 when that hits.

In addition, there's a 2-megapixel camera, Wi-Fi hard switch, Bluetooth 2.0 + EDR, 802.11g Wi-Fi, microSD slot, 256MB memory, EV-DO Rev. A, aGPS (not a real GPS), a 320x320 resolution screen, and front-facing keyboard. The launch date is tentatively April, but this is all based on a guy's posting in a forum, which means it can all be a pack of lies at this point. Let's run through the leaked product test. Tiny image? Check. Pixelated? Check. Cellphone camera origin? Fail. But two out of three ain't bad.

And while we hate to get ahead of ourselves, we're ready to celebrate that the Treo's antenna is officially dead. If the picture is fake, we're guessing it's a pretty good mock-up since the button layout more closely resembles that of newer Palm models like the Centro. But at least in my book, the Treo needs an extreme makeover (phone edition) to capture my heart again. Screw functionality, I wanted sliding, clicking and some sort of gesture hologram smell control.
Unconfirmed: Upcoming Sprint Roadmap Leaked? Palm Centro 10/14?

A poster on the phonenews forum seems to have come up with the Sprint lineup for the next several months, all the way into early 2008. To start, they have the Motorola V9M on 9/4, the USB EV-DO Novatel U727 modem on 9/30, Palm Gryphon (code name for Palm Centro) and Sanyo S1 2500 on 10/14, LG LX260, HTC Vogue, BlackBerry 8130 Pearl 2 and PX600 on 11/4, Motorola Q9C on 11/23 and Treo 800w and Samsung Blackjack International in Q1 2008.

Even if these dates are solid now (assuming these are actually real), providers are known to switch up dates for various reasons. Use the schedule as a guideline more than a definite calendar.
Palm Treo 800w Details Leaked: WM6, Wi-Fi, EV-DO Rev. A

Our Sprint source gave us a great tip on the upcoming Treo 800w that's coming Q4 2007. (That's not a picture of it on the left.)

Lots and lots of improvements for Sprint users over what they can get right now with the 700wx, including EV-DO REV A., Windows Mobile 6, a 320x320 display (now supported on WM6), 256MB flash, 128MB RAM, a 1.3-megapixel camera, Wi-Fi, GPS, Bluetooth, and an expansion slot.

The big ones are of course Windows Mobile 6, the increased speed of EV-DO Rev. A, Wi-Fi, and that larger screen resolution. The 320x320 resolution is square, yes, but nothing that Treo fans haven't gotten used to already. Plus, it's the first phone announced to support the 320x320 resolution that WM6 offers.

Sprint's aiming at a Q4 2007 release, but we'll see whether the phone's pushed up or back in the coming months. – Jason Chen

Thanks tipster!
