Nokia's 8600 Luna has Smoked Glass, Hefty Pricetag

Nokia has just unveiled their latest phone, the 8600 Luna. It's unique in that its defining feature is glass … it's got a transparent smoked glass sliding mechanism that keeps the keypad visible when the phone is closed, with sexy results.

As for the inside (it's what counts, after all), it's a quad-band GSM phone with a 2-megapixel camera, an OLED screen and a microUSB port. No other details to be had, but hey, it's pretty! Is it pretty enough to warrant the nearly $950 price tag? No, no it isn't. It'll be hitting Europe in the second quarter, and there's no word on a Stateside release.

In case you don't remember, there's a 2-megapixel camera, 1GB internal storage, an OLED screen and a sliding body.

The stainless steel black back might make it look like something that belongs in Batman's arsenal, except for the fact that Batman's phone is actually inside his cowl and has excellent reception and battery life.
Nokia's 8600 Luna Imminent

The Nokia 8600 appeared on Carphone Warehouse back in April, only to disappear. Now it's back and available for preorder.

And Nokia still hasn't made an announcement for the shiny handset. But the more we see of the 8600, the more it looks like a midrange phone I'd rather pass over than review.

Nothing much is revealed on the preorder page: it's still 2mp, symbian 40, and stereo Bluetooth. Except confirmation that the phone will have 128MB of mem built in, not 1GB as previously speculated. When is it coming to the US? Who knows, but since it's almost free in the UK, I'm sure it's not going to cost a lot here, either.

From the Carphone Warehouse:

The Nokia 8600 mobile phone isn't merely fashionable: it's elegant as well. The rounded corners and smooth features give it an almost-futuristic appearance - as does the easy-to-read high-resolution display screen. And the whole thing is wrapped in a stainless steel body with a unique smoked glass sliding cover that protects the keypad but still enables you to access the phone's main functions.

Best of all, inside this sleek device you'll discover all the familiarity and quality of a Nokia handset. It starts by putting a 2 megapixel camera on the back, which lets you capture photos that are good enough to print. There's also a video recorder, along with 128MB of built-in memory for storage.

When it's time for more entertainment, the Nokia 8600 offers a multimedia player for a wide variety of music formats (and an FM radio, too). Plus there's stereo Bluetooth compatibility, email software, Java games and a mobile internet browser.

So if you're looking for the latest fashion icon, ignore the catwalk and take a look at mobile phone design instead. With quad-band coverage and its distinctive styling, the Nokia 8600 is going to turn heads... because it's an international supermodel!

Just yesterday we were drooling over some unconfirmed information on the 8600. Now today we've landed some new unconfirmed shots of the 8600 sans marketing gloss.

Our impressions? It's shiny and smooth—not like the moon at all (but potentially very similar to the goddess of the moon after which it's named...we've never seen her in person). Hit the jump for more blurry pictures.

Unconfirmed: Nokia 8600 Looking Better, Getting More Specs

We saw the 8600 back in April when it was posted on Carphone Warehouse, but now someone's posted an "official" picture of it in the mobile review forums.

Along with the picture, which looks tons better than the render last time, there are more specs as well. The phone will have Series 40, a 2-megapixel camera, quad-band GPRS/EDGE, Bluetooth, and a QVGA display. That's pretty much all we know for now, but it's been approved by the FCC, so it'll probably be released somewhere sometime soon.

I'm not usually keen on Nokia's designs, but this 8600 looks pretty darn hot. – Jason Chen

New Nokia 8600 Details Posted on Carphone Warehouse Site

It's also known as the Luna and the Fashion High, but here's Nokia's 8600 in all its glory. UK retailer Carphone Warehouse posted a pic and details of the phone, describing it as "a handset with a distinctly fashionable feel."

"The rounded corners and smooth features," the blurb continues, "give it an almost futuristic appearance." Yeah yeah yeah. Other specs include a 2 megapixel camera, MP3 player and 1GB of built-in memory. No details of price or shipping details as yet, but UK customers can pre-order if they want, and it will definitely be cheaper than the 8800. – Ad Dugdale
