20-Foot-Long Lego Battlecruiser Can Probably Sink Oil Tankers

This is a 20-foot-long Lego model of the HMS Hood, a Royal Navy battlecruiser built in 1920 and sunk by the German Kriegsmarine Battleship Bismarck in 1941. This stunning piece of brick engineering, built to minifig scale, has a robotized mast and is actually bigger than the 16.4-foot-long Lego U.S.S. Harry S. Truman. Check the gallery to really get get the idea of how gigantic this thing is. Updated: Lego builer Ed Diment wrote to tell us the impressive technical specs of his HMS Hood:

Lego Mindstorms Fat Boy Is Controlled with Actual Bike Handles

This remote-controlled Lego Mindstorms NXT Fat Boy bike is cute and stylized enough to guarantee a post on its own. But when you see that the actual controller is shaped like the handles of a real motor bike, then it's just not a matter of writing about it or not. It's a matter of taking a plane to Germany and stealing it. More »

Buy a Lego Life-Size Replica of Yourself for $60,000

Lego Artist Nathan Sawaya—one of the only six certified Lego professionals in the world, three in the US—will do a full-size scale Lego replica of yourself for $60,000. You just have to order it from Neiman Marcus, send some photographs, and Nathan will build your natural-size 8-bit version. Given his rates, that amount is quite reasonable and, coincidentally, our remaining budget for the rest of the year. Now I just have to come with an excuse to order one of myself and get another $60,000 to buy one of Uma Thurman. Update: Nathan came to us with some specifics about this work. More »

The Zombie Apocalypse Is Less Terrifying in LEGO

The question is not IF there will be a zombie apocalypse, but whether or not said end of the world will occur before or after singularity and the robot uprising. Here, in the maudlin sculpture Zombie Apocafest 2008, we see the battle depicted in the only artistic medium that will survive when Man is literally blinded by his own arrogance, LEGO. This diorama was built by participants of the recent BrickCon 2008. May it serve as a warning to us all. [flickr via Brothers Brick]

460,000-Brick Lego Tower Breaks World Record

At 96.73 feet (29.485 meters) this Lego tower built in the Rathaus Platz in Vienna has broken the world record for the tallest Lego construction in the world. It took nearly 460,000 bricks and it was built over four days. The views from the top are quite stunning.

Baseball Bat Can Break Lego Minifig Legs

Believe it or not, there are no baseball bats in the Lego universe. Why? Probably because a minifig could use one to break another minifig's plastic cranium. And we all know that you can't use weapons in Lego's universe, much less break minifig craniums. This is why Brickarms, the dealer of All Things Violent for Lego minifigs, has released the baseball bat weapon, including a psychopath minifig posing with it for their publicity shots: More »

DIY Mini-Segway Shows Dean Kamen Isn't All That Clever

OK, OK... so Dean Kamen actually dreamed up the Segway in the first place and other amazing things, so he's pretty clever. But then so is the guy who's put together this Arduway out of an Arduino controller board and some Lego Mindstorms motors. It senses its position with a gyro, and balances pretty much like the real thing, only smaller. Maybe good for giving your pet mouse some 21st Century transport? If you're impressed and want to try it out then there's a DIY guide and the software available. Clever stuff. [Project page via Hackaday]

Yankee Stadium Gets a Glorious Lego Send-Off

For die-hard Yankee's fans like myself, this has definitely been a year to forget. I think everyone would agree that the season itself was a total disaster, and I'm sure that there are a lot of people that are sad to see the old stadium go. Lego artist Sean Kenney is one of those people, which is why he and a Manhattan grade schooler spent three years building a 60" x 66" x 14" replica (1:150 scale) using 45,700 bricks. As you can see, the result of their efforts so far is impressive. When completed, the stadium will be populated with tons of miniature spectators and vendors. A full gallery is available after the break. More »

The Force is Tiny (and Incredibly Detailed) With This Amazing Lego Microscale Diorama

Lego microscale enthusiast RogueBantha has been busy. For the past year, he's been putting the finishing touches on this incredible battle scene between the Rebel Alliance and the Galactic Empire, and over the weekend he placed the last brick. Now, Lego and Star Wars have been done before here at Gizmodo (the former being profiled dutifully by Jesus during his awesome trip), but the extra cool thing about this busy, incredibly detailed scene is that it's done in 1:200 microscale. That means there's tiny X-Wing's making their strafing runs against tiny AT-AT's; a bad ass monorail system; and even a massive transport ship—all captured using as few pieces as possible. More »
