Sony Quietly Introduces PlayStation 3 Youtube Uploading

Mainichi Issho, a Japan-only PlayStation Network game that's been out since 2006, has quietly brought a pretty killer function to the PlayStation 3. Players can now record gameplay and upload clips to YouTube from within the console. Better still, Sony has confirmed that the toolset will be distributed to developers to integrate into games at their discretion. With the popularity of fan videos and YouTube, it's great to see Sony embracing networks outside of their own. Good stuff, and forward-thinking on Sony's part. [Gamespot via PS3 Fanboy]

Rock Revolution Drum Kit Confirms Absurd Arms Race

First we had Rock Band and their 5-button drum kit. Then we had the announcement of Activision's Rock Band clone (Guitar Hero IV) and its 6-button drum kit. Now, not to be outdone, we have word of Konami's Rock Revolution and its 7-button drum kit. And yes, it's all way too eerily reminiscent of "7-minute abs." More »

PlayStation 3 Firmware 2.35 is Probably (Not) for GTA IV

Sony's latest firmware update (2.35) for the PlayStation 3 is available now. Nothing special here, as the firmware is only meant to "improve the stability of some PS3 titles." And by "some PS3 titles," Sony couldn't possibly mean GTA IV... [Thanks tipsters!] More »

First Live Shots of Metal Gear Solid 4 Bluetooth Headset

We've been dreaming of using the Metal Gear Solid 4 Bluetooth headset for secret pantsing missions every since we laid eyes on it. Other than these new shots that will probably self-destruct soon, no new details we didn't already know: Bluetooth 2.0, eight-hour talk time, 160 standby, drops on June 12 with the game itself. Peek another shot below, or head to IGN for a few more. More »

Guitar Hero IV's Drums Will Have Six Pads, Two For Cymbals

Cymbals! That's what was missing from the Rock Band drum kit. Not missing, since some of the pads changed to cymbals whenever necessary, but it didn't have two upper pads dedicated explicitly to them. No more. Game Informer says the upcoming Guitar Hero IV will have a six-padded drum set, but a custom-designed guitar due to the legal problems Activision had with Gibson. You'll supposedly be able to create your own songs as well, but we're not sure if you can just import an existing MP3 and go from there, or if you have to create it from scratch. And by "scratch," we mean copying your favorite songs as best you can. [Primo Technology]

PlayStation 3 Video Download Service Coming Soon?

The rumor of Sony giving PS3 a video download service at E3 just got bumped up again by a small ad video floating around the net. The screencap shows 13 icons, but Cartoon Network, NBC, HBO, and some other one are used twice, leaving only nine TV stations for download. If Sony doesn't unveil this at E3, we'll be really surprised—and maybe even a little offended. [sev1512 via PS3 Fanboy via Kotaku] More »

Toshiba Bringing PS3 Innards to Notebooks, TVs

Its recently been revealed that Toshiba is planning to use Sony PS3 technology in its upcoming TVs and Notebooks. The OC Register's Gadgetress got her hands on the Toshiba's Qosmio notebook (shown above), which will use the SpursEngine chip, jointly developed between Toshiba and Sony around the Cell. The processor will handle much of the video and multimedia processing, taking the load off the main CPU. More »

Notes: PS3 Reliability?

This is not any sort of indication of a hardware failure epidemic, but a friend of mine had a Playstation support person tell them that there were a lot of 40GB failures, with many units being sent back more than once. More »

Netflix Working With Three Secret Hardware Partners: No Names, Just Hints

We already know that Netflix has partnered up with LG, but a recent conference quarterly call has revealed that there are three other players in the mix:
At this point, I can tell you we have LG plus three additional partners actively working on integrating our technology into their products. Three of the four partners are major companies which each sell millions of devices per year and will enable the Netflix functionality in some of those devices likely in Q4 of this year. The fourth partner is a small company with which — which will likely launch sooner than Q4.
So which companies could they be talking about? More »

Sony's PlayStation Home Expands Beta This Summer, Goes Open Beta Fall 2008

PlayStation Home, the long-awaited PlayStation 3 social networking++ app, is finally going to see open beta starting Fall 2008. Before that, if you're one of the few lucky users chosen by Sony, you'll be able to participate in the closed beta expanding some time in Summer 2008. No other real features have been announced lately, but if it's still kept all the details announced back at GDC 2008, there's going to be customizable avatars, modifiable living and common spaces, accomplishment galleries and lots of branding/third-party products. It's basically a Second Life that doesn't suck, and isn't full of (as many) weirdos. More »

PlayStation 3 May Launch Video Download Service at E3 2008

The LA Times and "studio executives familiar with the plan" are predicting a summer 2008 launch for the PlayStation 3's video download service. Whether this service is a rental scheme—like iTunes or Xbox Live Marketplace—or a download scheme where you get to keep your videos and transfer them to the PSP, is uncertain. More »

PS3 Console Armor Offers Full-On Joust Protection

Heaven forbid your pristine PS3 console should ever get a scratch on its shiny surface. Fortunately, this potential disaster may be less of a concern after you adorn your hardware with some of this console armor from Messiah Entertainment. They even have versions for your controllers—making your system look like a some sort of freakish knight with a big head and tiny hands. The console armor will be available starting on June 13th for $19.99, while the controller armor will ship on May 16th for $9.99. [Amazon via i4u]

PlayStation 3 External Hard Drive Mod Is Great Work For the Blind

The Super Mario Galaxy Wii Mod is a good mod. This PlayStation 3 external hard drive mod is not. We're not against adding more hard drive space to the PS3—Sony actually puts instructions on how to replace the internal one in the manual—but this? This stove vent addition to the top of an already too George Foreman grill-like PS3? This is no good. We appreciate the effort though, and at least the finish seems to match the PS3 somewhat. PS3 Movie and TV VOD Service Arriving... Sometime

Sony is preparing for the inevitable and will launch a movie and TV video-on-demand service for the PS3 to compete with the glut of other options already available, according to Sony's Peter Dille. He was thin on details, saying the only thing that we'd be getting "very soon" is more details on the service, which he claims will separate itself from the pack that we've already seen. Does that mean low-budget stag films? Exclusively movies/shows that feature Kareem Abdul-Jabaar? Only time will tell. [Kotaku]

PlayStation 3 2.30 Update is Live - New PlayStation Store and DTS-HD Master Audio

The previously announced PlayStation 3 2.30 firmware update is now live, bringing with it a new PlayStation Store and DTS-HD Master Audio Support. To see more detail on the DTS audio support, click here, or hit the jump for the release. We're happy that Sony's finally revamped the store—the original one really was designed with less of a controller and more of a mouse in mind for navigation. The new store feels much more refined with the navigation menu running down the left. More »

Metal Gear Solid 4 Bluetooth Headset Takes Crown For Best Headset Ever

This is, without a doubt, the absolute best Bluetooth headset ever made by human hands. We have no idea whether the battery life is acceptable, whether the noise reduction is adequate, or whether it even fits well over our ear. What we do know is that it's a Metal Gear Solid 4 headset, which means it belongs to Snake. SNAKE! This alone makes it worth our $59.99. Look for a simultaneous release on June 12 with the MGS4 game on PS3. Again: best headset ever. [Kotaku]
