While it's still a teaser at the moment, John Nack (senior product manager for Photoshop) has confirmed the development of Photoshop Express. It's a free online photo editor that's not meant to replace Adobe's current offerings, but "make Adobe imaging technology immediately accessible to large numbers of people." And from the screenshot here you can tell it's not even a dumbed- down Photoshop, but an entirely new product (that reminds us of something from the new iLIfe).
The announcement follows Adobe's implementation of Premiere Express, their online video editor, and it signifies a fairly progressive market plan by Adobe. In a content creation culture where every teen is a video editor, the democratization of powerful multimedia tools online allows Adobe to reach out to this new generation without abandoning their industry professional bread and butter. And it makes us want to remind kids that we once edited a movie on a VCR (after walking 30 miles barefoot in the snow, aiming our kite for lightning to capture the electricity to do our work). beautiful photo. Where was it taken?
i loove you phoootoooshop!!!!
clearly since they are this far in developement and already have the online video editor they are only doing this because of apple... oh wait, except this is free and online... maybe its NOT like apple?
i think it will be useful for those of us to cheap to buy it. where is that? it looks like a cool place to visit.
btw.....that cube in the bottom right corner has icons for Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator, Adobe Acrobat, Flash and i can't think of the other 2
Maybe I've just used the full versions of Photoshop too long, but Elements drives me crazy. I hate it. I hope this interface works better than that.
But will it run on the iPhone????
So...it's just a rudimentary photo editor? Snore.
This seems like a place where open source or otherwise free software excels over major conventional software companies. I don't think Adobe needs to worry much about being bested at a prosumer level, but this small stuff-- they're not going to be willing to give away the bank and will just be outfeatured.
This is the way software is gonna go I think. If not 'online' then 'open source'.
Looks like that park in SanFran.
This is great. Google gives us basic office tools, Adobe gives us free image and video editors, Mozilla gives us free browsers...it's a great time to be online! Dude! Sweet!
"make Adobe imaging technology immediately accessible...to large numbers of people."
They could also accomplish this by lowering the price of PhotoShop, et al.
I think their point is that everyone pirates photoshop anyway. This would make it accessible to lots of people.... legally.
btw another product in the rubiks cube in the corner is dreamweaver, not sure what the last one is
btw, just to finish it off the name the cube game, I think the last one is Bridge.
justmejosh- Isn't this why they have Photoshop and Premiere Elements?
@jibbly: You thinking of the The Japanese Tea Garden in San Francisco's Golden Gate Park? Don't think it is though...
This was posted 5 days ago on his Blog site_
Ya'll should catch up a little_
I really doubt that this will be that much different or offer much more than any of the current online editors: picnik, preloadr, faxuto etc...
This will probably be at a slightly dumber level of elements...since they already practically give that out free with most purchases (printers, scanners, etc).
However they wouldn't actually release anything to compete directly with their $630 CS3 photoshop. Why would they?
The picture is the Palace of Fine Arts in San Francisco. It's the only remaining building from the 1915 Panama-Pacific International Exposition.
TOP ROW - InDesign - PhotoShop - Illustrator
Top Row [behind InDesign] is Adobe Stock Photos
MIDDLE ROW - Flash - Dreamweaver Acrobat
Middle Row [behind Flash] the only reference I find to this icon is Breeze_ Except that Breeze has been rebranded as Acrobat Connect Professional_
BOTTOM ROW - Adobe Bridge - VersionCue - Device Central_

@Windhawk:
Nah, I was refering to the palace of Fine Arts, just forgot the name. Lots of nice oddball mallards in that lake/pond.
Looks like a VERY dumbed down version of Photoshop Lightroom.
anyone know if there is an API in the works?
@JustMeJosh: You beat me to it. If they were truly trying to make their software accessible to the masses, how about starting by lowering the price! Right now it is more expensive than what most people's entire computer hardware cost.
Yeah thats the expensive part of San Francisco...
Cold too since it's right next to the bay.
Geeze, it seems like every camera I buy comes packed with Photoshop for free. Doesn't everybody have a copy already?
As a matter of fact, I decided once to "buy" a cheap copy of Photoshop on a Woot like site for 20 bucks, and damned if I didn't receive a cheap mini digital camera that was packed with Photoshop software. I felt a little cheated since I wanted the official version with the guides... but the software works.
That is the east courtyard of the Theed Palace on Naboo. It is where Anakin first touched Padme's left breast. Thank you wookiepedia.

Looks like the new picnik online photo editor is going to have some competition.

Great way to get those myspace kids to clean up their pictures before they put them online..
Yes, I'm looking at you, Vanessa Hudgens.
To steal a line from Galaxy Quest: "But why?"
All the other propositions so far here fall short of any reasonable or viable motivation for such a site. May I suggest that the reason or this bizarre piece of nothing is to get people to register on an adobe site, and then market their products to you because the online version pretty much sucks. It's like a 30-second iTunes preview folks. It's not "real" software. You have to shell out the cashola to get the real goods.
Here's what the "best" online competition looks like:

Recommend multi-nationally patented new gadget of "Multi-Rat Cage Trap" as the picture shows which once won the prize at the internatonal fair for practical inventions "IENA" in Neuremburg, German.
It is ideal for wide use outdoors and indoors, around the areas such as warehouse, depot, livestock farm, kitchen, or any places where mice or rats usually appear. The nature of Mouse is skeptical and it is prolific, so it's been difficult for a long time to kill them off to preserve the circumstance where human being is living against their havoc even though a lot of catching devices or measures have been tried. With the Multi-Rat Cage Trap, no worry about toxic residual to kill them with poison; also unlike the traditional mousetraps which can just individually catch one mouse only and won't mostly work after the first catch. Our Multi-Rat Cage Trap always works in reuse and it can catch up to 16 rats on one time use because of the innovative design of 2 valved entries which allow mice just getting in for the food bait placed in the trap almost without feedback feel from the valve action but no way to get out and the two level cage design makes the first coming mice move to the top level, then leave the space of the bottom level with 2 valved entries to more and more mice and allure them to get in, thus the all trapped mice won't be agitated resulting in continuous catch.
You may have a lot of doubts on my above mention made you feel it was exaggerated. Why don't you personally experience it by buying a sample from me, then simply install it in the area where there are some mice or rats existing? I believe you will get the positive answer soon.
Please feel free to contact me for further information if you have interest in it.
Best Regards,
Roger Luo

CS3 is the reason why Photoshop is free.
@OldSchoolGadgetLover:
There are multiple versions of Photoshop.

Adobe's main Photoshop guy has confirmed the company is working on a stripped-down version of the image-editing package that will be offered as a free online service.
