HTC Advantage 7510 Not US-Bound

Sorry HTC fans, the HTC Advantage 7510—HTC's updated 3G (HSDPA) UMPC—is not coming to the US because its Qualcomm chipset is not permitted for sale here. Interested parties can still import the device for those fun extra costs and inconveniences associated with international third-party dealers. Meanwhile, we'll celebrate that since the UMPC market is exploding at the moment, we'll finally have plenty of other decent options among US-native tiny PCs.
HTC Updates the Advantage X7510 With 16GB Flash

The HTC Advantage has just received a hardware and software upgrade, and is now called the X7510. HTC has bumped the internal storage to 16GB of flash, and improved the keyboard as well as adding in Opera 9.5, and a "future version" of Windows Mobile. No price info yet, but the Advantage will be available in March. Expect to see HTC's other hiptop, the Shift, hit Europe a little earlier. Specs of the Advantage and pic of the Shift, after the jump.

The X7150 also has updated HTC VueFLO, so that it detects the device's orientation and rotates the screen. The rest of the hardware remains the same as the earlier Advantage: Marvell PXA270 624MHz and Qualcomm MSM 6275 processors, 5-inch VGA screen with 3-megapixel camera, 128MB of RAM and tri-band HSDPA. Looks like the new battery has about 5 percent less capacity, but we guess that the flash drive should make up for that difference. [ZDnet]

While the Shift also has GSM/GPRS/EDGE/HSDPA network support, and Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, it looks like if you buy it from Orange in the UK, you'll only be able to get a data plan with it. [Slashgear]

HTC Advantage Available Now For $899

The HTC Advantage, HTC's not a girl, not yet a woman smartphone/umpc hybrid is available now. You can pick one up on Amazon and CompUSA for $899, and take it wherever people don't stare at you funny for using a big phone with a keyboard. The specs, to refresh:

• Windows Mobile 6
• 5-inch VGA touchscreen display
• 8GB hard drive, 256MB ROM, 128MB RAM
• Quad-band GSM and HSDPA
• Bluetooth 2.0 and Wi-Fi
• MiniSD Slot
• HTC VueFLO navigation
• 3-megapixel camera
• GPS
• 3.5mm audio jack

It's a weird no-man's land of a device since it's got a bunch of phone features and runs Windows Mobile 6, the smartphone OS, but has a big keyboard and doesn't fit well into your pocket. It's supposedly a laptop replacement if you don't have a laptop handy, but we'll have to try it out ourselves to see if we can replace ours.

It also won't be carried on either Cingular or T-Mobile, our two GSM carriers, officially. But that means you can take it to either one, since it comes to you unlocked. Grab it now for a reduced $849 on Amazon. Unless you're like 12% of the people who visited the page, then you'll buy Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows.

If you're at all interested in an HTC Advantage, you can pre-order one on Amazon right now. If you don't remember, the Advantage is the not-quite-a-UMPC, not-quite-a-smartphone device that runs Windows Mobile 6.

If you've got $849.99, you can pre-order it now (the page says in stock soon) and get your mobile computing groove satisfied. It comes unlocked, so both T-Mobile and AT&T customers can get in on it. And if you're not keen on buying this before the actual reviews are in, you can make like 12% of Amazon shoppers who viewed the page and buy Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows instead. – Jason Chen

HTC's Windows Mobile 6 Upgrade Roadmap Shows at Least a June Wait

Most of us with Windows Mobile smartphones made by HTC are still waiting for the official WM6 upgrade ROMs before upgrading. After all, walking up to the store with a bricked phone made by some ROM we found on the Net isn't our idea of a good time. Good news, as HTC's just released their upgrade path.

If you're using the HTC TyTN, the 620, the P4350, P330 or the Advantage, upgrades will be rolled out on their site starting June. But if you're in the US, you may have to wait longer, as HTC has to hand off the upgrades to the provider for them to brand and certify first before propagating them to you. – Jason Chen

HTC Advantage Heads to the US This Summer

The HTC Advantage—or what you've been seeing as the Athena or the Ameo—is finally going to hit US shores. Most of its features will be the same as before: 5-inch VGA, 8GB hard disk, 256MB ROM, 128MB RAM, QWERTY, Tri-Band UMTS/HSDPA, Quad-Band GSM/GPRS/EDGE, Bluetooth 2.0, Wi-Fi, miniSD, and a detachable QWERTY keyboard.

Fortunately for us, it's going to be styled as shown above, with a jet grey/charcoal black finish and with a strip of clear plastic that can be used to see Windows Mobile five alerts when closed (a Windows Mobile 6 version/upgrade is coming down the line). Unfortunately for your wallet, you won't be getting a cellphone provider subsidy when you buy this—it's going to be offered direct from Amazon and other retailers this summer. Looks like carriers aren't ready to jump on this type of device just yet.

We've gotten to play with this thing twice, and can easily say it's definitely worth a look if you want the mobility of a smartphone but need a larger keyboard for text entry and a larger screen for better productivity. It's a good contender, but you should see what else HTC has up its sleeves. – Jason Chen

What's in a Name? HTC Athena Now Called HTC Advantage Portable Office

Is it a Windows Mobile portable PC, or is it an Ultra mobile PC (UMPC)? Is it the HTC Athena, is it the Ameo as we heard just last month, or is it the HTC Advantage?

Well, now it's called a "portable office," and it's running Windows Mobile 6 and officially called the HTC Advantage. It will first be released in Europe by T-Mobile, but there's no word on when we'll be seeing it stateside. There are, however, a couple more great-looking pics of this strange but resplendent bird:

This pretty bauble has what most UMPCs lacked when they first came out: a keyboard. Bravo. We want one. – Charlie White
