Japanese entertainment rag BARKS is floating the idea that the Wii puts out a sound frequency that "calls out" to and attracts the dirty little creepy-crawlers—gokiburi, one of my favorite Japanese words, even though I hate roaches. It's probably bunk and (BARK admits it might be), but have any of you noticed your pad's become a roach motel despite maintaining the same standard of (un)cleanliness? The 360's bomb shelter-flattening fan would probably negate the effects if you're looking for a quick fix. Also!
I'm too lazy to translate the whole thing, but there's some fun anti-Chinese ribbing in one of the little conversations when his editorial department asks the writer if he's sure it's not a Chinese Vii that's attracting the roaches.
The dig's familiar to me, 'cause when I lived in a heavily Chinese neighborhood in Japan, I got to hear from locals (Japanese ones, obviously) all the time about how I'd get robbed by dirty Chinese indigents and my apartment would be bug-infested before I blinked despite my bleach-loaded OCD clean routine. Okay! Totally irrelevant personal anecdote over. [BARKS (and image) via Destructoid]

Well, my parents' house isn't roach infected, so I'm guessing this isn't true? (Hopefuly it's not true, cause that would be ridiculous)
Our Wii is roach-free.
The Chinese also make something called the "Buster Cat" which supposefly emits a frequency roaches and rats hate, so maybe you could use it to counter this?
If I had a wii, it would be roach free.
Haven't they already proven Wii attracts retards?
Q: When is a cockroach a fish?
A: When it's a LOach.
Or is that a Lolshoal?

I think humans and the stuff we eat attract more roaches than a Wii.
these aren't the kind of roaches that congregate in ashtrays, right?
Well im sure my PS3 would just fry them (it doesnt overheat, but it sure gets plenty hot when inside a closed equipment cabinet!)
my original xbox definitely attracts roaches in my moderately roach-infested brooklyn apartment. once i opened it up, held it upside-down, and gave it a good shake and about ten roaches, some living and some dead, fell onto my floor. i think it's the heat that attracts them.
Not a problem till Animal Crossing II comes out.
I'm pretty sure roaches like electronics in general. That roach extermination (Vexcon) episode of Dirty Jobs with Mike Row grossed me out when he picked up a cordless phone and a bunch of roaches scurried out of it.
You die, f**king coc-a-roach.
Wii for 11 months, no roaches.
But then my wife is so OCD with cleaning I don't think we even have dust mites here....
at least it wasn't a BUG in the software ! ha

I actually saw something similar last weekend. A friend was playing his Wii with some other people when he suddenly went into the kitchen looking like something was on fire.
Nothing was on fire but there were a ton of ants living inside his Wiimote. There seemed to be a lot of them on the back of the battery cover but even after they shook the thing out for a good solid 10 minutes they kept finding more and more inside it.
He said he never spilled anything inside his wiimote but something definitely attracted those ants to it.
Was Bark paid by Sony to write that?
Such a weird accusation to make. I got no roaches, but then again, my building is brand new and I live on the 11th floor.
I think roaches and other pests generally like to incubate themselves in warm places. If you have your wii on standby all the time it's probably a pretty warm place to be. It also has plenty of openings for the buggers to get into.
Mostly, this will only be a problem if you have a roach problem to begin with. If your house is clean, then you probably have nothing to worry about.

Keep in mind, roaches are pretty dang hard to get away from in Japan. There are only two thing things aside from food (especially the left over residue in a beer can...don't ask...) that roaches love. Moisture and heat.
And if you've ever been in Japan, you know they've got plenty of both (Tsuyu anybody ???). Thus, they're everywhere.
Pretty much everyone in suburban and rural Japan (which is where I spent most of my time there) has a can of Roach spray in a fairly handy place in their homes (no matter how clean), and they don't try to hide it. You will frequently see people spray the shrubs along the street in front of their homes or small businesses and see hundreds of roaches writhing and dying, as most of them are actually hatched in the wild.
Until winter anyway. The cold takes care of'em pretty good. That and the standard precautions (caulking...roach baits..and the occasional roach motel to monitor their presence) keeps most homes free of infestation. Though adult bugs will still wander in from time to time...
As for the Wii attracting them via ultrasound...I guess it could be, but I'd need to see some more conclusive evidence before I'd flat out believe it. Many Japanese homes/living rooms are pretty spartan so there's not a lot of places for Roaches to hide from the light (and they do hate the light). But I'm guessing the Wiis are out and in place for long stretches of time. Add to that the heat factor and it makes sense even w/ out the ultrasound...

Does the Wii have a fan?
I'm guessing the CD loading slot thingie at the front makes for easy access and the lack of a fan makes for warm toasty Wii insides. That sounds like the perfect home for the roaches.
well I live in China, and play wii all the time (not the Vii) and I have no roaches...
So not only is my ring of perpetual holy fire around the PS2 cool to stare at while playing a violent game, it's also useful. Sweet.
@dna: zing!!!!
My japanese Wii, bought in Hong Kong and used in China havent attracted any roaches :)
When playing my Wii roaches do tend to accumulate, but I never put them in the console. That would just be silly.
Well... I'd have to say that nearly every console I have ever owned has attracted lots and LOTS of roaches. But every two weeks or so I clean out my ashtray so the roach buildup can start anew. I still don't get all the 360 fan jokes. Mines wisper quiet- definitely less noise than the previous xbox. After the constant noise jokes I would assume that mine wasn't functioning properly but this console has gone two years with no RRoD. Maybe that's the solution to the RRoD! Everyone! Unplug your fans!!!
Maybe if they had some Wii's to buy then I could report something.
What people would get down to so that they can make some news.
