Conspiracy Unveiled: TiVo, Apple, Microsoft, CEDIA, CTIA, Nintendo, Photokina Out to Kill Bloggers

I finally pieced it together.

You set embargoes to lift in the middle of the night. Your information "leaks" right before I'm supposed to take the girlfriend out to dinner. You gang up, and throw down CEDIA, CTIA, and Photokina in different time zones. You launch blockbuster gadgets like TiVo Series 3, Zune, and Nintendo Wii all within three days of each other. Oh yeah, and the new iTunes movie store, iPod Nano, iPod Shuffle, and iTV.

I get it. You're trying to summon a tidal wave of news to smother bloggers.

Well guess what? I didn't like sleep anyhow. Bring it.-Brian Lam

Apple Coverage Roundup: Apple Introduces iPod Upgrades and iTunes 7, Announces iTV

Apple made four releases and one announcement in San Francisco today, as you probably saw if you visited Gizmodo at all in the last 12 hours. Here's a roundup of all the stuff that went down in San Francisco.

First up is the updated iPod. The Apple iPod 5.1G has a screen that's 60% brighter than the 5G, and is available in two models, a 30GB and an 80GB. The 30GB model gets 14 hours of music playback and 3.5 hours of video playback, whereas the 80GB gets 20 hours of music playback and 6.5 hours of video playback—both increased from the 5G models. The 30GB costs $249 and the 80GB costs $349, lower than the previous $299 and $399 prices.

The iPod 5.1G and the older 5G can both play the new iPod Games, which are "Bejeweled", "Cubis 2", "Mahjong", "Mini Golf", "Pac-Man", "Tetris", "Texas Hold'em", "Vortex", and "Zuma". You can buy these for $4.99 each from the iTunes store. We also have a mini guide on how to get iPod games working on your 5G iPod.

Jump to see the rest.

Next is the second generation iPod Nano, which got a redesign and looks quite like the discontinued iPod Mini. The iPod Nano 2G has an aluminum body, 24 hours of battery life and is available in three sizes. The 2GB iPod Nano is silver and costs $149, the 4GB versions are silver, pink, green and blue and cost $199, and the 8GB is only in black and costs $249.

These Nanos fit into older docks, but the dock connector is a little bit offcenter, so they may not work with all accessories. There are also new accessories made just for the Nano, including lanyard headphones ($39), an armband ($29), a new dock ($29), and a USB power adapter that's smaller than the previous USB power adapter ($20). Also take can see our iPod Nano Hands On.

Both the Nano and the 5.1G iPod have the updated search and quick scrolling that makes browsing faster by displaying what the current letter you're scrolling through is, and letting you input alphabetical letters to jump to a certain place. The letter display is already in 5G iPods after you perform a software update, but I'm not sure about the character searching.

The last iPod is the iPod Shuffle 2G, which has 1GB of storage, costs $79 and has a built-in clip on the back. It weighs half an ounce, measures only a half cubic inch in volume, and is still screen-less like the old iPod Shuffle. Its battery life is 12 hours, and includes a dock to connect to your PC (no longer has a USB-connector like the iPod Shuffle 1G). This is only available in the one color, grey.

The iTunes software has also been updated to version 7, which has new album and cover browsing views including a Cover Flow view to scroll through your music, movies and TV shows by its cover. There are also new iPod management screens to manage your iPod preferences from inside iTunes, instead of in iTunes preferences. The iPod games are also purchased through the iTunes store for $4.99. The Cover Flow features look really awesome, and you can try it out for yourself now.

The iTunes Movie Store has just launched with 75 movies from Walt Disney Pictures, Pixar, Touchstone Pictures and Miramax Films. Among them, "Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl", "Shakespeare in Love", and "Toy Story". These movies can be downloaded in 640x480 resolution, which is near DVD quality, and can be played on your iPod or iTunes software. Prices will be $12.99 for pre-orders and first week sales, which then jumps to $14.99 afterwards. Older titles will be $9.99.

The last item is the iTV, a set-top-box-like device that can connect to your home network through 802.11 wireless or ethernet, and streams your iTunes movies to your TV. The power supply is internal, and the connectors are USB, HDMI, component video, optical audio and analog audio. It's wider, but flatter than a Mac Mini, and has a UI similar to Front Row. This will be $299 when it's released in Q1 2007. More iTV Pictures and iTV Screenshots for your enjoyment. – Jason Chen

Nah, it looks more like a Star Trek Communicator, especially with that clip on the back. At Apple's after event party, we took some time to check out the 1GB player, with its new earbuds. Not a bad buy for $79 bucks.

Instead, we get an update to the Generation 5 iPod that has a few new tricks like a brighter screen, an extended battery life, better song search, and decent, Xbox Live Arcade styled games that you can buy from the new iTunes store for 5 bucks. Call it generation 5.1. And btw, the awesome news is that the current generation of ipods can handle the gaming goods.

So here are the photos we collected today, along with some screenshots we took at the main event. This, and everything else we know about the iPod Showtime updates, after the jump.

All Apple Showtime Posts [Gizmodo]

From our original post, here.

The iPod Video is now 60% brighter and up to 4.5 hours of battery life up from 2.0 hours.

Gapless playback is now in for all iPods. Instant searching so you can input letters with the wheel. And a letter display as you're scrolling past the songs/artists.

Games. All designed for the wheel. Bejeweled, Cubis, Bahjong, Mini Golf, Pac man, Tetris, Texas Hold'em, Vortex, Zuma. Showing off the bejeweld gameplay now. These games will work on all 5G iPods. You can buy them off the iPod store. $4.99 each.

60% brighter display, 75% longer battery life, gapless playback, games, new headphones.

Lowered price to $249 for the 30GB version and a new 80GB. Both white and black. $349 for the 80GB.

Apple Showtime's After Party: Photos of the iTV Livingroom Streaming Box

The iTV set was by far the shining star of the show, hounded by fat, balding, geek paparazzi. The little set top box iTV looks like a half height Mac Mini with the sole purpose of streaming media to a livingroom TV. This is what is known to PC-doods as a Media Center Extender.

Again, it streams those new 640 by 480 pixel movies, music, photos, podcasts, TV shows. There's a power supply inside, USB, 802.11 wireless, Ethernet, HDMI, component, stereo audio, and optical audio out to your TV.

The good news is that even though there's a front row like interface, it looks like it's running fast enough that it won't suck like Apple's sluggish 10-foot interface, Front Row.

Apple's set top streamer won't be in our grubby little gadget mitts until 2007, but we're already asking: Why $299 for something without a drive? I don't know. Call it love.

And we touched it! Jump for some fetish shots, along with some screens. BTW, its a box, so don't expect centerfold-type imagery, mmkay?–Brian Lam

(PS, we're not done yet! More posts to come in the next few hours.)

After the main event, we were ushered to a back room where the new stuff was on display. We got to play with the pretty little second gen iPod Nano, and even got her to pose for some glamour shots.

Before you jump for the goods, we'll say this. Jason Chen and I prefer the older style's rounded edges, that make it look like a shrunken full-sized iPod. This one is somewhat of an iPod Nano and iPod Mini hybrid, with the sharp edges on the top and bottom of the aluminum case. The colors are stupendous. But we still miss the bling'd out Gold Mini. (Bring it back, Apple!)

Now, jump to see the images, and the video.–Brian Lam

From today's earlier post on the new ipod Nano:

Battery life increased from 15 to 24 hours, gapless playback, instant search like the big iPod, and quick scrolling. Comes with the new headphones.

Comes in three models, 2GB model in silver, 4GB in silver, pink, green, blue, and 8GB in black.

$149 for 2GB, $199 for 4GB, $249 for 8GB model. Double the storage for the same price.

New packaging is 52% less volume than the old iPod nano. It's more "environmentally friendly".

All three are available today.

The new product: a box to connect to your TV to play all these iTunes Movies and iTunes TV shows on it.

This box supports wireless—no stringing cables—and is the missing piece.

iTV looks like a small Mac Mini. It's just an internal codename, and will be renamed later.

There's a power supply inside, USB, 802.11 wireless, Ethernet, HDMI, component, stereo audio, and optical audio out to your TV.

Whatever setup you've got, you can hook up to this iTV box. It can go out to your TV, stereo, whatever.

Steve's holdiing one. It's wider than a Mac Mini, but flatter.

iTV looks faster than Front Row. Looks similar to Front Row—has movie covers, TV covers.

When you're browsing your movies, it gives you the synopsis of the movie, stars, and the cover.

Demo of watching TV on the iTV. Steve's showing The Office clip. I would have preferred 24, but whatevs.

He's controlling everything with the little remote.

Steve's browsing music now. Browsing through artists, now albums, picking the songs. The album art is on the left, reflected, very pretty.

Podcasts, photos can also be viewed through iTV. Similar to how Front Row works. Browse through your photo album (iPhoto, no doubt), and view a slideshow with music.

iTV should be out sometime in Q1 2007. Works with iTunes on PCs OR Macs. Priced at $299.

"Apple's in your den", "Apple's in your living room", "Apple is in your car", "Apple is in your pocket".

Steve says this should give you an idea of where they're going. TAKING OVER YOUR LIFE!

Wha? One more thing?

The iPod Nano: The 2nd Generation

It's made out of aluminum, even thinner than the first gen. They're bringing back colors (like the mIni). It looks similar to the Mini, actually.

The new nano works with the charger, the armband, lanyard, and works with the Nike Shoe (I don't know if it works without the adapter or if that's still in there. I think it's still necessary.)

Alright, it's late, I'm playing with the Camera that Sean Captain lent me for Apple Showtime tomorrow. And then this lands in my inbox:

Let's just say I have been informed by a little reliable birdy about Tommorow's event. The line-up will follow this similar structure:

Welcoming of Media Members
Discussion on iTunes software, iTMS integration into iTunes, and iTMS
sales and facts.
Announcement of iTunes version 7.0
Announces better search feature for Music Store
Announces Movie Store. Available Immediately will be movies from
Disney and Pixar, among other studios.
New iPod Nano Announcement (nice brushed casing, while it will have
same features as first gen, only a longer battery life)

New iPod Announcement (Widescreen, Bluetooth, and featuring virtual
touchwheel. Does not include Wi-Fi, or any other protocols)
One More Thing....

Whether you believe it or not, jump to read the rest...

TubePort. A $99 2-piece set that includes a dongle that connects via USB to your mac, and another dongle that connects via included HD cables or regular Component cables to your TV. The movie is accessed on your Mac via an iDisk-like storage component hosted by Apple.

Jobs will then explain the pricing structure of the Movie Store.
Movies wil be available as either a smaller iPod-format (which will
cost $9.99 per movie), or as a larger, streamed movie to be streamed
to your TV via TubePort. This cost $14.99 per movie. To purchase an
iPod-formatted movie and a streamed version of the same movie, it will
cost you $19.99.

iTunes movies? Nano? Tubeport? Video iPod? If this isn't a fark, then we were right about our guesses, and this anon tipster is our very own Saint Gizmodo. And we'll just skip liveblogging the rest of the keynote. If this is all a lie, then we'll post their email for you all to savage. Who knows at this point.–Brian Lam

Apple's Showtime: The Odds on New Hardware Tomorrow

You know what happens the days before an Apple event. Fanboys go gazombo and start photoshopping fake Video iPods with reckless abandon. Their eyes roll into their heads and they moan for iPhones. Half of them even think that Core 2 Duo Macbooks are coming, as do the King s of the Geek Journalism.

But we've never told you what we think is coming. Here are Gizmodo's Odds on what hardware Steve'll unveil at Showtime.

Movie Downloads, 99% percent chance of iTunes hard-launching full-length feature films.
All our hopes rested on an invite image emblazened with the words "It's Showtime." We'd normally make that reason to believe Steve is delivering his speech in show tunes form, but then there's this legitimate outlet's article on the subject that Apple, in "mid-September, sources tell BusinessWeek, plans to announce it will start offering movie downloads from its iTunes store." Of course, Steve wouldn't expect us to watch movies in front of our computers. Nor would he spill all his beans with his "It's Showtime" invites, saving nothing for his typical "One More Thing."

This leads us to speculate on new hardware....Jump!

Video Airport Express: 75% chance.
We're basing our gut check on the above, plus Apple Insider's fairly detailed—and confident—wording about a video streaming system. I'd guess such a machine would have Microsoft Media Center Extender functionality, and hope for Apple's sake it's a more responsive system than the company's Front Row UI, which no one I know uses. I'll just throw this out there: Maybe it'll use powerline networking, as some of the newer gear is surprisingly springy when it comes to dealing with high resolution video. (Yes, I said powerline, like it's 1999.)

True Video iPod: 50%
Having been burned 2342352345 times before, my gadget-sense refuses to give me anything on this one. But given the movie announcements we're solid on, and the lack of refreshes in the past few months for the vPod, don't you think this could actually be the Date Of All Dates? Clearly, we'll all hungry for it. And the iPod banner hanging over Yerba Buena's Arts Center in SF makes me think so. (See below. It's real, we sent an intern to investigate.) But that could be for the colored Nano updates with more we're expecting any day now. I place the likelihood of a new nano at higher odds than the video iPod out of sheer plausibility, but then lower it back to even odds based on the movie theme of the event. Plus, I don't give shit about the nano, really.

iPhone: 25%
So far, only analyst Shaw Wu has come up with strong comments regarding the phone. Even stronger than his comments are an Apple Insider's source, one with an unblemished record for predicting new Apple porn, that Steve is bragging to his homies about his new candy-bar phone. We've seen Apple patents, too, with little etchings of phone-like devices. So, it's coming, but I'm going to bet that Steve isn't going to launch anything of the sort tomorrow...unless it's a nano replacement with a phone built in...which I lay odds at 10%.

Macbook Pro with Core 2 Duo: 25% tomorrow, 80% sometime this month
Now that Apple is running native Intel hardware, there's no excuse for not keeping with the times. And right now, you can't say your lappy is a fast one without a Core 2 Duo chip inside. We asked editors of PC World, PC Magazine, Maximum PC, and Mac Addict, and they all said the same: Apple has to upgrade the Macbook Pro in September to stay competitive. We're not sure tomorrow is the time to do it, but we're betting that it happens sometime this month.

What do we know for sure? No new iMac, or Mac mini....unless there is.

Tomorrow, come back to read us live, and talk some trash about how off our predictions were. What do you think'll come out?
