It's easy to say what we love about the new iPods—like Gizmodo commenters, they are each special in their own unique way. But there are some gnawing issues that we would like to bring up. First, five things we love:
• iPhone price drop - $200 discounts come to those who wait, and who in their right mind would buy a 4GB iPhone anyway?
• iPod touch's iPhone interface - Now everybody wants to be a hand model.
• Wi-Fi Music Store - I think I heard Steve Jobs say, "In yer face, Bill."
• 160GB iPod classic - There's a server in my pocket, but yes, I am happy to see you.
• Video nano - Hell, if Sony could do it...
Now, the stuff that doesn't sit so well:
• iPod touch's 16GB of flash - Solid-state can't deliver enough storage capacity yet—shoulda risked the bulkier, more fragile HDD, Steve!
• 99-cent ringtone surcharge - All for using your own damn songs on your own damn iPhone.
• The slightly Hobbit-esque look of the nano - A little plump around the edges, no? I half-expected hairy toes.
• No free browsing in Starbucks - Give us a little taste for free, eh? How very crack-dealer of you.
• No email app for the touch - The software is written, the platform is there—please don't make me check Gmail on Safari!!
There's actually one thing we're torn on, and that is being torn. We love so large a bounty of worthy toys, but I am sad that there are now three very different products from which I will have to choose. This may sound blasphemous, but I'll say it: there is no One True iPod.

Comments
Add a camera and an email client and those of us that are stuck in Verizon land would now have every reason to buy an ipod Touch!
I bought a 4 gig iPhone 19 days ago...why? Because all my music is on a 20 gig iPod. Am I pissed? Yes. Am I complaining on various boards, yes. But thats the joy of being an American, I can express my voice (whether you agree or not) without fear of being taken away in a hooded mask...although Apple's actions since the announcement have started to shake my faith. Will I end up buying music via WiFi? Probably.
can anyone tell me whether or not i can use my own songs on the ringtone editor??
Mr Black, return it and pay the 10% restocking fee ($50) and then buy a new iPhone on the spot and you'll save about $100.
I give the wild about 2 weeks on the iTouch at Starbucks before we have home-brew that lets you surf for free while sipping a latte. I also think it will take that long if not less to find a hack for the ring-tones.
oh, and the Zune 2... so sad... so sad... :D
Looking at the current line up I'd have to say I'd get an iPod Classic. The touch is cool and all, but the storage is way to small, and it lacks a lot of features. The Nano looks fat and gross, and the shuffle, well that's great for people who fit that market. I also like the iPhone, but hate AT&T. When and if Verizon ever gets it (which they won't) I'd get that. But for now, iPod Classic looks great.
Yea I agree that "there is no One true iPod". All of these just leave me wanting more. If the touch iPod came out with 80 or 160 GB models I'd be all over it. Looks like I'll wait even longer until all my dreams come true.
fanboys *cough* you were just calling the nano "fugly" like a week ago and now all your can muster is "slightly hobbit-esque"? please
@gadgetchic:
No. Well, yes, but you have to pay $.99 more for it. But it sure blows the peewads out of the prices Verizon charges.
Can anyone tell me why every time there's a goddamned keynote all we see for the whole day are stories about iPods and iMacs. I mean seriously. There was not THAT much news. You could have saved it up and released a big story. A summary of the whole keynote. With stats. Instead of the same old damn comments repeated over and over again. There have been comments about the lack of storage capacity in the touch in at least 4 articles. It's unecessary.
@leicaman:
thanks.
I'd even go with the tiny 16GB of storage in the 'Touch' if I saw some nerds porting the Weather and Mail app over from the iPhone...
I'm some friggin' torn between the Phone and the Touch - drives me insane.
T.
screw ipod get a creative
ipod touch way way way way way way too similar to iphone
@FlashSandbox: I bought it 19 days ago...refunds for 14 days or less (spoke w/ 3 different Apple stores who haven't been told otherwise yet)
I still love my ipod nano 4gb.
I LIKE the design (the new nano looks like a shorter, fatter version) of my old 2nd gen nano. He's green. I call him kermit.
I don't need 80 gb, I certainly don't need 160 gb.
My GF has an 80 gig video and she hasn't put more than 20 gigs of music on it.
the iphone? Pretty, but big deal. I'll take a crackberry pearl anyday.
Meh.
@Mr. Black: Haha man I bought a 4GB iPhone a few days after launch. Am I pissed? Yeah. Am I a sucker? Sure. Do I regret it? Not really, I still love the phone, and obviously, hindsight being 20/20, I wouldn't have been so hasty. But after over a decade of waiting for price drops and deals on Apple's product lines, I'm not surprised I've finally had to pay the "sucker tax."
Ah well. Guess I'm gonna go punch a baby now.
@Mr. Black: I thought ATT had a one month "change your mind" policy? YOu might be able to return the 4G and then...buy an 8G for $100 less...
why didn't they configure the Nano horizontally? thats why it looks off, the proportion is all wrong. if they would've configured it so the screen is on the left and the control is on the right it would still be slender and sexy.
but then again, you couldn't do the same hand holding, family lineup. meh.
I agree, there needs to be integrated Email and Google Maps. The software is already designed for the iPhone; why not bring it over to the Touch? I am REALLY hoping that Apple will allow 3rd party developers to create applications for the Touch. They definitely should ... it would be like having thousands of free software developers at your disposal.
@Mr. Black: did you try calling customer service yet? If you're nice you may be able to have an exception made. These guys get yelled at all the time so if you're polite but persistent they may help you. The 14 day policy isn't "official" meaning it's not set in stone (that's straight from a customer service rep's mouth), and a lot of things are done on a case by case basis. Cust. service reps do have a lot of power to do those sorts of things.
@OLDMANSTAN: Thats because the nano was "fugly" last week, but now I have seen real photos of it in peoples hands, well, let me just say.....I like it! ;)
But apart from the nanos, I'm not that impressed...
If you have had a iPod for a while, you will have a lot of music, so your only option if you want the latest Apple MP3 player, is to stick with the Classic, even though if offers very few features compared to the 5G...
The iPod touch is nice, got WiFi, web browser.....but is only 8/16GB, so its not a good upgrade from a 5G iPod with large HDD, same with iPhone...
So the only good upgrade is the nano, with alot more features than the last nano, i.e. Video....
But the prices are nice I guess! ;)
@gadgetchic:
You can make your own ringtones from MP3s using Wavepad. Might take a few more steps to convert into file types the program can read, but its free.
Now how many people are going to get the itouch and pretend they are talking on the iphone? Start lining up now!
I STILL LIKE my upstage!
Is it me, or did Apple practically price themselves out of selling a iPod Touch? If it's 399 for a 16GB touch and 399 for a 8GB phone with more apps, how many people are going to choose more storage over the phone/email/etc... of course, figure in the AT&T subscription requirement and double the storage looks a hell of a lot better.
iTouch
no bluetooth? WTF?!?! Screw battery life I want wireless headphones.
* $1.89 for a ringtone is still a penny less than any other service I'm familiar with.
* For $399, I'm going to need my entire library, and 16 gigs just won't cut it.
* Doing away with scratch-prone plastic on the classic was nice, but the chrome on the back is just as scratch-tastic and more finger-print prone than, well, anything at all ever.
* Still, I love coverflow, and 80GB worth of music for $249 is a sweet deal. I might switch back to iPod for that. I switched to Zune because of the UI's emphasis on album art, so now that Apple has finally taken advantage of that color LCD they've been rockin' for years in a manner which actually matters, yup, I'm excited.
* STFU if you wasted $600 on the iPhone. You wanted to be first, and you were. Face it; if Apple had launched the iPhone at $400, they would have all disappeared from stores and wound up on eBay for $600 where you would've gladly scouped them up anyway, as you've all clearly demonstrated your belief that phone was worth $600.
It's been two months now, so eBay sales probably would've dropped down to retail ($400) by now. The only difference between my story and reality is that Apple cashed in on your anxiety instead of some eBay leeches. Personally, I say, good for Apple. It's their product, and they're entitled to their profits. Heck, if I were Microsoft, I'd have sold the '360 for a grand during it's first month if I knew I could get away with it.
Bottom line - buyers set prices, not sellers. You have no one to blame but yourselves.
@tomholiday: Here here! That's exactly what I've been thinking ever since I saw the first "leaked" photos of the Nano. Then they could have utilized the nifty rotating screen from the iPhone/Touch. Horray Product Designers!
Is there any news on an update for the version 5 ipod? WIll we het the new nav structure?
you guys are really digging that black&white to color transition aren't you?
it's like the coming on a new era or something.
@jeffj-nj:
100% accurate.
For the uninitiated, welcome to the marketplace....
I have no sympathy for early adopters who get buyers remorse when prices drop, features are added, and bugs are fixed. You paid top dollar so you could put it in everyones face that you were cool.
This is the price you pay.
I feel for you, but you wanted to have it first. You needed to have it first.
This is what happens.
I think there's a good amount of variation for different types of user... There's a server in your pocket with the 160GB classic but more importantly one in your car. I have an itunes interface connected to my car stereo and a massive music collection that I wouldn't mind being able to listen to in total rather than going through the tortuous task of deciding which tracks off my favorite albums i want to trim which i do now. I can see a lot of young professionals especially those that fly a lot more into the touch... as well as all the 'cool' kids... and lastly ipod nano as the everyman product for both humans and hobbits alike.
@fLUx1337: Except that the features they added don't really belong on a Nano. I love my 1st gen Nano for the gym or running - like a shuffle but you can pick your songs. Anyone watching vids on that thing will need LASIK before too long.
My guess:
Ipod Touch = Iphone with killed features.
Same as Celeron = Pentium with burned cache.
@hoserelder:
MacinTouch
I am wondering if anyone has noticed on the Apple site the following:
Go to the store, choose the iPod touch, then choose compare.
Why does the 8gb Nano hold fewer songs, photos, video than the 8gb touch and have the same battery life even though the touch has a larger screen?
Iphone owners...
There is not one reason to pay $.99 for songs you already own. Alternatives are out there and they are very easy to find.
New iPod marketing? "iSee. iTouch. iCome."
So, since we don't have to worry about rouge apps in the iPod Touch crashing any cell networks, then they'll be releasing an SDK for it right? And apps written with the iPod Touch SDK will port right on over to a jailbroken iPhone right? I am right aren't I?
I just bought iToner and transferred 10 ringtones to my iphone using music I ripped from the CD I own. I just can't justify paying $2 for a ringtone when I can make one myself.
Not all early adopters buy things to be the first and rub it in people's faces. Many, maybe even most, are like me and are excited about the product and want one. It's that simple. I bought mine around launch day because I wanted one. I couldn't care less if people see it, I wanted it. That being said...of course I wish my phone had been $200 cheaper, but oh well. I'm still happy as hell with it and glad I got it when I did. There's no way I could have held out this long.
brill, they made the nano bigger.
maybe they will make a giant shuffle too
I love everything about the new products. I bought my iphone to have one first of course there was going to be a price drop. The thing that bugs the hell out of me is....we have been told about a big update coming and today I figure most of us thought it was gonna come instead he just told us AGAIN a big update is coming with one difference..whats in it.
im not suprised about the no free browsing at starbucks, think about it... who runs starbucks wifi?
T-Mobile.
yeah they'll let people, especially iPhone users on their network free, when other people pay like 20 a month.
