iPhone Apps Back With A Single Click (Yes, This is the Moment We've Been Waiting For)

Easily installed iPhone apps are back on version 1.1.1. If you point your iPhone/Touch browser to jailbreakme.com, click "install AppSnapp", it'll use the TIFF exploit to jailbreak your phone and install Installer.app.

Our test notes include the following:
—Before you start, I'd probably switch to Wi-Fi and turn off the auto-screen lock (set it to never under general in the preferences). This takes a few minutes, and you probably don't want your screen going dark while this happens.
—The magic'll run in the background, eventually kicking you back to the lock screen. When you return, you should have an installer.app icon on your menu.
—This worked for Benny and Blam.

The process is kind of scary if you think about it. With a click in Safari, a program with root access has been dropped on your iPhone, with full access to all your data. If you're not feeling brave, you may want to wait awhile to see how this shakes out. But I do see an iPhone Dev Team affiliation, and TUAW supports it, so I'd say we're looking good. AppSnapp includes some other features as well, such as a patch for the TIFF exploit, which they claim will leave you with a safer iPhone after you install the program than a regular phone running 1.1.1. More updates and impressions as they come along, let us know your success/horror stories with this in the comments. [jailbreakme via TUAW]

  • heh.... i think it broke my phone. everything went black and now it's not responding.

  • Works great. Has been out in beta since 2 weeks ago. I've got all of my 1.02 apps back with a few exceptions that dont work in 1.11. Alot of themes dont work but in general everything most people need works great. It took me about 10 min total.

  • Maybe the root of the whole Apple vs Microsoft security debate is due to a fundamental difference in usage of the two companies' software: people exploit Microsoft's security holes to run malicious code, but people exploit Apple's security holes just to be able to run non-malicious software! It's a good thing no one has ever written an iPhone virus, otherwise someone migh accuse Apple of writing a buggy OS with huge security holes...

  • Does this kinda thing still void your warranty?

  • I'd love to try it, but wouldn't want to brick my phone...

  • Just installed, it works great!!! just make sure you're using wifi.... I thought I was so I had to install it three times

  • "Does this kinda thing still void your warranty?"

My god you guys need to grow a pair....

  • Warranty Shmarranty, I just dont want my phone bricked at the next update, its my only window to the world.

  • @jawzxy:
Apple would say so, but all you have to do to remove it is run a Restore on your iPhone/Touch and it's back to normal again. So no.

  • @OpenIntro:
That was a legitimate question. If it voids your iPhone/Touch warranty and some component of your device later fails, you aren't going to be very happy when Apple won't repair it.

  • @jawzxy: YES!

I was gonna wait till real third party apps came out, but forget it. Apple is too slow. I just did it and it runs great.

  • Geez guys stop your crying, brick this brick that, warranty smarranty... You're all adults, supposedly, so do it if you want and if it crashes deal with it. If you don't want to do it, stfu. :)

  • @MANYOU07

    yeah, right...

    - Maybe people will NEVER write a malware for iPhone, cos' Jobs and everybody else are soooooo cool.
    - Maybe we're creating some sort of a parallel new society (only with Apple fans, course) where things are just like they should be, everyone is a nice, selfless acting person, and we'll never be subject to crime and bad people again...
    - Maybe, if I could wait longer, Santa would come up with a totally free iPhone on my socks, by the end of december...

OR, MAYBE, it's just a suplly/demand matter. Don't know what's up to you, but if I was a "virus developer" (no matter what it's means), it would certainly be hard to choose between a platform with hundreds of millions of users OR the other one, sooooo cool an with a dozen of altruistic, good nature people. gush....

P.S. don't get me wrong, By now, I'm almost an apple fan guy....

  • Is it best to install this as a fresh install?
Should I restore iphone first to factory settings?

  • What is a good application to install ring tones with?

  • Is anybody having any negative results with this?

  • Ok... Unfortunately some apps i've installed don't work. VoiceNotes... Apollo won't even install. Chat doesn't connect. Is it just me? What's the deal?

  • Is anyone having any negative results with this?

  • So far I have tried three times. The first two times Safari closed immediately and I waited at the home screen for about 10 minutes before trying a gain.

The third time it stayed at the safari screen for about 10 minutes. I hit the home button and it took about 30 seconds to go to the home screen. I've waited about 10 more minutes and nothing has happened yet. Anyone else having issues?

  • Just crashes my phone back to the home screen repeatedly. This is on a fresh 1.1.1 (3A109a)

  • If you have never unlocked your phone via any unlocking means it will not brick. If you run an AT&T card on a locked phone all you have to do to fix any problem is Restore the phone. Jailbreak and installer don't touch the baseband which is what caused the problem in the first place.

  • hmm... and now "installer" is on my desktop... apparently it was installing behind the scenes after the first crash. Thanks for the link. ;)

  • Hooray! I tried about 8 times in total and it finally worked!

  • I tried it last night when I found on digg, and it worked pretty much instantly. It is quite awesome.

  • Its supposed to crash after you hit the link. After the crash your bsd is openned up to allow installs. Olt of the apps dont work but most still do. Ive had to do a hard restart to get some to work but then they do.

  • what's stopping someone from going into an apple store or best buy and installing this on all the iphones/itouches on display?

  • anyone use it on a touch? I conviced a coworker to put it on hers, now installer is crashing, only the summerboard options work, everything else jumps out after trying to open. She wants to get rid of it cause things aren't working, but she can't open installer to remove anything!
also, iTunes is trying to download an ipod update, any news on what's in that release?

  • @manyou07: People hacked the Xbox to run legitimate software: Xbox Media Center.

  • update:
she is doing a factory restore to lose the hack. any tips on getting this to work?

  • For those of you with jailbroken 1.0.2. If you successfully tried this, what was your process and was your internal IMEI number changed?

  • So, is this thing compatible with 1.0.2 or is it strictly 1.1.1? Also, I noticed yesterday Installer was gone from my menu, so this thing would get it back up there right?

I don't care about the warranty issues because I already voided it, but if it's of any concern I suggest don't install it, it will more than likely void yours too.

  • IS TAKING SO LONG :((((((((((((

I blame china and all of its lead.

  • Ouch. I installed Customize so I could clean up the icons and put the transparent/reflection dock I used in 1.02 back up... and it crashed. When my phone restarted, it has an ipod logo in the upper left corner, the time in the middle, the battery and my alarm clock indicator in the upper right... and that's it. Nothing else.. Black screen. I can call myself from anotehr phone and get into contacts and from there into email, but nothing to get into fix it... guess I get to do a restore. Yippee.

  • Updated:

Took forever to finally get to work without crashing.

Now wants me to update 3.0b --- "Package download failed" --- fails every time.

  • amazing downloading the installer app is extremely easy had a little trouble getting some of the apps to work but with a little time everything seemed to work seamlessly. this is truly impressive and makes the ipod touch a must get item. without it not so much.

  • most programs don't work for me. So now installer is on my phone, doing nothing. Just like third party apps were doing yesterday ...

  • Worked like a charm for me. I had previously jailbroken my 1.1.1 phone and was having problems with it (youtube was not working and safari would crash), but this method works perfectly with no crashing. Here's what I did:
-Did a fresh restore to 1.1.1 through iTunes
-Made sure my auto-lock option was turned to NEVER
-Visited the site, clicked the link, and waited about 5 minutes. Installer.app crashed the first time I ran it, but I did a hard shut down (home and power) and it worked fine after that.
-After installing third party apps, I did have problems running them at first, but then I installed BSD subsystem and everything works (no clue why this works, but it does).

Hope this helps - thanks GizModo!

  • it worked on my ipod touch but now i'm having issues with safari not finding the server. not sure if its related or not . It worked all day, now tonight it just stopped being able to connect....

  • @rndmideas: what's stopping someone from going into an apple store or best buy and installing this on all the iphones/itouches on display?

---- Nothing. I did this to all of the phones and touches after they told me that all of the Leopard copies were reserved (B.S. - went across town to the other store and they said they don't even do reserved copies.)

  • why the fuck isnt this thing working?????
It loads for a half a hour the goes away like nothing ever happened. I swear they put something into this phone. Ive tried everything to jailbreak it and nothing's worked! AAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

  • @The Chad: i used it on my touch and i had the same problem with the programs going right out after i try to run them, but everything else works fine for me

  • I made a video on how to do this if anyone is interested...
And I made one on how to install iPhone Apps on your iPod Touch...

  • I tried it yesterday. The first try my phone locked up. Restarted then tried again. It worked and I had Installer on my phone. The only problem I encountered was my phone was really slow. I restarted my phone, and everything worked perfectly and has since!

  • got installer in then the pos tried to update itself and bricked my touch. trying to restore it now. stay away from this until february.

  • I just installed this on my touch this morning and it works great! It took just a couple of minutes and I was running apps in no time. After downloading the apps, I had to power off then on to get them to fully run. Where can I find games for my emulator?

  • My only question is where's the best place to go for reviews/recommendations of which apps to install. There are so many out there. My tiny little brain is reeling....

  • when your phone bricks will it not even turn on?

and if i want to install this do i install it on firmware 1.0.2 then update my iphone?

i wish i could just restore my phone but itunes wont let me without updating it too.
