Two dudes are already waiting in line at the NYC 5th Avenue Apple flagship store. Even for the PS3, PS2, and Wii, I've never seen a 100-hour lead time on a gadget queue. I'm disgusted, but also kind of jealous.
Close up shot where you can see the geekiness seeping off their faces and onto the pavement:

How is that the start of the line? There doesn't seem to be a store entrance anywhere near them... O_o
wow, is that necessary?? It sounds like they're going to have a lot of units available... and even if it's sold out they will mail it to you in a few days...
I want an iPhone very badly.
But not THAT badly.
They want attention. There is no need to do this.
Maybe Apple paid them to line up.
@ polybius
they have to stay out of the way of the sane people.
i take it u have no ideal what to NY store looks like from street level.
if they have this much free time, they have the money to spend. they will have the 8gb phone with the best plan to go with it.
is it possible someone get jphone quicker when s/he queue up first @AT&T?
What, no stormtrooper or chewbacca costume?
@ kobe
ikea gives out a shopping spree when they open a store, maybe they think... no wait, my bad. just two stupid fanboys.
i bet the police will kick them out in no time for whatever reasons (safety, blocking the sidewalk, ...) and they'll have to come back on thursday or something.
I would bet anything they are there for one of two reasons:
1) Attention: and you just gave it to them
2) They think they, as the first buyers at the marque store will get something free, like a free iPhone, or a hug from Steve Jobs.
Also, if they are waiting in line at their age they are one of three things:
1) On vacation - if so that is a very sad spot for a vacation.
2) Unemployed - if so very sad that us working stiffs are probably paying for their iphones via welfare or unemployment
3) Calling in sick - if so a brave move and most like they would now fit into both this category and unemployed since they have been outed on a major website, surely their bosses will catch word.
Finally, they must have reinforcements coming. No way they could survive let alone be comfortable with the pictured provisions for five days.
@ANoel: Voldemort's number is in it!?
Yeah, I'm a leg and rear man myself, and Nicole has all of what I like in spades.
As a good friend of mine once said, "Have you ever seen the turd cutter on Nicole, man"? I was never able to get that disgusting expression out of my head ever since. Trust me, you'll be using it at work tomorrow.
Tomorrow...."What are you guys doing sitting over here...the lines over there." "What?" I would heckle them hard if I lived in NYC.
"3. avatar and name are on opposite sides of the post? what other site have you been to where that's the case? it's impossible to tell whose post your reading until after it's been posted."
1) yeah. agreed completely. it seriously sucks and follows zero usability standards. it's the kinda crap you get when you let web-coders do double-duty as web-designers. seriously... who looks at the bottom-right corner of a page before reading something? anyone? you mean that's counter to ingrained reading methods? REALLY.
2) the line break bug is crap too. very annoying.
3) just noticed the "blockquote" tag no longer works. that's convenient.
so i'm curious where the actual benefits of this new system are? i haven't noticed anything that makes me go "well... the butchered usability and loss of basic function isn't *that* bad... especially considering we get awesome new features like _________ and ________ and ________! three things i *surely* couldn't live without!!"
FEEL FREE TO FILL IN THOSE BLANKS.
the two dorks waiting for the iPhone need one of these.
my last 2 comments ended up in the iPhone post. even though they were posted from this page. that is also a "bug".
seriously. i'm not posting in this story. i'm posting in the design/commenting bugs story. kind of hilarious in that sense.
Love the Soloptimus comment, apparently irrelevant to this thread and made in response to ANoel's nonexistent comment. You guys have your comment threads mixed up. Now that's what I call live debugging. Maybe time to do it right, like having a stage server, perform QA, *then* release to the public server? Right now, things seem to be changing at arbitrary times without warning. Just a thought...
@Evodico: your ramblings are not symmetrical with apple's stock growth as a company.
All I want is Boeing with a freaking laser beam
Yes but can it pop popcorn?
Real Genius anyone?
These guys musta watched 'Real Genius' (circa 1985) while chugging beer bongs at their Tech Universty
O_O AWESOME
By Brady Forrest The iPhone comes out this Friday and the line to buy one has already started. Now there is also the announcement of the first iPhone developer event the weekend of July 6th. Organized by several barcampers it is sure to generate a lot of interesting apps for the new device.
Wow, I'm reading comments from at least 3 different post on this page, well played Gizmodo, well played indeed.
"Even for the PS3, PS2, and Wii, I've never seen a 100-hour lead time on a gadget queue."
You clearly were at Times Square for the Wii launch. At least one guy was in front of the Toys R Us for at least over a week.
SO EMBARASSING!!
The flagship office has a line but everywhere else they are patherically small.
If this isnt a pathetic show of HYPE, then I dont know what is!
PS
SF MARKET STREET, 6 people waiting its 12 noon!! HAHAHA
As 6 p.m. rolls around and the new iPhone goes on sale, I can only sit back and thank my lucky stars Emmeline is not a teenager -- because she would be acting very much like I have been in the past few days."I waaaaah-nt wuuuuuu-ne!"And then my wife would have to say "No, god damnit, NO!"
The iPhone went on sale last Friday. Easily the most hyped product this year, the latest gadget from the wizardly engineers and designers at Apple ??? they dropped the Computer from their name a few months ago ??? is a hybrid mobile phone/Web browser/iPod.
