The iPhoney Award

Judging by the fact that the new Nano looks a bit like an iPod knockoff itself, we thought it would only be fitting to show off the iPhoneys, a contest for those who create the most blatant iPod/iPhone ripoffs of all. Current front runners include the Meizu m8, Microsoft Zune and Teclast t59. They always say good artists copy, great artists steal. [oobject]

  • LOL I love that Chinese iPhone rip.

  • ok, most are similar or carbon copies but the Zune? That's just a low dig, Apple didn't create the rectangular box shape you know?

  • Come on, we know its a ripoff, but everyone likes the Minione... Oh and just for clarity fanboys, Zune's resolution is 320 x 480, it has the same dpi as the ipod, not the same res...

  • You guys are a bunch of Apple fanboys. The Zune? Are you kidding me? Apple would never make something that looks like that. Not saying the Zune is ugly, I like its styling, but it's not an Apple-ish style.

  • Inspiration, not insperation.

  • Apple invented white, black, rectangles, circles and touchscreens. Also, every single product ever made by Apple has been 100% original. Deal with it.

Apple is God. If you don't believe Steve, just ask Gizmodo. They'll set you straight.

  • So, Meizu MiniOne... Now that the iPhone has dropped $200 and the iPod Touch has been announced complete with OS X, Safari/WiFi/Internet, and given that it will be hacked the f-up to include support for just about anything, um... what are your plans?

MiniOne: "Well, I gotta be honest, I guess I missed my window. Dammit. F-ME! F-ME! --Uh, sorry. Anyone want a somewhat buggy, semi-neat, not nearly as good knock-off with some extra 'please-love-me' features thrown in?"

  • the zune? your kidding? just because you guys wont touch anything made by microsoft with a ten foot pole, doesnt mean everything is a cheap knockoff of your precious jobs' lovechild.

  • Moreover, every product that has ever launched before a similar Apple product was actually copied from Apple. The trick is simple. Cloners use a time machine to go to the future. There, they look at an Apple product that has yet to ship and clone it. Then (bear with me), they take the time machine again to go to the past (not the past of this future, but even better, the past of the initial present). Finally, they launch the cloned product way before Apple does. Those awful cloners!!!

  • Wow... I respect you guys, Gizmodo, and your opinions, but to claim the zune is an Iphone copy... The Zune will take over, it's inevitable. Microsoft has the money, the product, the intelligence. Apple has fruit.

  • @jmdecombe:
    You finally get it.

  • @mudman: No, I finally *reveal* it.

  • Okay so i have to agree with the anti-applers about the zune. Design is not similar enough to be called a fake (especially on a story called iphoney). In fact it looks like you just added that one to stir up a little flame war. just me.
Although aesthetically ipod and zune aren't that similar, you have to admit that the only reason MS even considered making the zune was because of the success of the ipod. NOT SAYING APPLE INVENTED THE MP3 PLAYER. gotta go, SJ needs another latte.

  • Okay, the Zune looks pretty much nothing like the iPod. I'll give them that the circular controller is somewhat of a ripoff, but they function completely differently.

Plus Microsoft has the sense to make firmware updates DOWNLOADABLE, instead of forcing people to buy a new model to get the new updates.
