Arcades are dying out here in the States, but they sure wouldn't if they were more like this Japanese Initial D cabinet. Instead of just a booth or a mockup cockpit to sit in, you get to actually drive in the tofu car from the Initial D series. Not only do you get to drive the '86, you can also ride in a Subaru Impreza WRX and Mazda RX-7 (also featured in the show). If only their Boong-Ga Boong-Ga game was so realistic. i hate japan for doing this.... *sigh*
I wanna go!!!
I am already shouting "Takumi!!!!" here at my desk in NJ.
i should really get a life.
not to jump on you, but it's just an 86, not " '86 " (because the AE86-drivetrained cars weren't made in just 1986; the Sprinter Trueno was made from '83-'87)
/end geek rant
(oh, and just for kicks: the Subaru is not a vanilla WRX, it's the STi Type R version V judging from the copper wheels and giant wing on the coupe along with the totally late-80's-ish rally style over-the-top body panels)
Probably good I don't have access to something like that.
My car is a (stock) WRX. I really don't need to pick up any bad habits.
I remember an arcade in San Fransisco that did the same thing with a RHD Mazda Miata maybe 10 years ago.
just to be more anal. 86-87 yeared cars were kouki for US, i believe Kouki spanned 85-87 in japan. and What takumi drives a Zenki was 83-84, 84-85 for US. LOL
hachi roku! *dream car*
I wonder if that thing would be road legal if it had an engine inside it, or if it's just a mock up
I wonder if the cars have air hydraulics underneath to give the user a real driving experience...would be sweeeet!
I wonder how long that thing would last in the USA without some kid stealing the rims. It's probably a pain to get JDM Arcade-Parts off the Interweb.
That thing is just asking for some 18 y/o kid to strip the interior, add some 75$ tower braces, and eventually sell it on CL b/c he "doesn't have time and gotta go to schol and stuf"
Takumi!!!!!!!!!!
This is almost as sweet as the Gundam cockpit arcade game i saw in japan. You get a comfy seat, a screen that stretches almost 180°, a headset to converse with you co-players, and a control system that you would expect of a skyscraper sized robot: 2 pedals and 2 joysticks with a gazillion buttons.
Best 500yen ever spent.
For those in Tokyo, it's at the SEGA Joyopolis in Odaiba, Koto-ku. Costs 600yen per play, and the ride is open starting 7/21.
Directions from Tokyo Station:
Yamanote Line to Shinbashi
Yurikamome Line to Odaiba
(5 minute walk from Odaiba Station)
Directions from Shinjuku Station:
Saikyo-Rinkai Line to Tokyo Teleport
(15 minute walk from Tokyo Teleport)
Filed under: Etc., Japan Sega, the once heavyweight console maker now buried deep beneath the letters Wii, X, and PS, still pulls its weight in the arcade arena.
@Mewish: Dang i was at Tokyo Teleport only two days ago, and im leaving tomorrow. Dammmm
