Asus Japan has announced that their beloved little lappie, the Eee PC, is heading to Japan. Normally we don't care too much about one of our toys touching down over there, but they're also getting a new 16G(B) model, whereas our rainbow of options ends at 8G. Also, it's rumored they're getting Windows XP as a pre-install option.
You can pretty much add whatever OS you want, but so far only the Fresno school system has gotten Eee PCs pre-loaded with Windows XP and Microsoft apps, per a specific arrangement. The hardware and (probable) price are a good fit for the general Japanese computer market, but not having Windows might prove to be an entry barrier, so it'd make sense for Asus to have it at bat for people looking for a work notebook. We wouldn't mind having the extra choice (or the 16G model) over here, either. [Akihabaranews]

eeePC Girl is still confused. "Where's the 'any key', y'all?"
@omg-ponies: I was JUST about to ask if anyone knew the girl's name. She seems to be popular on the EEE PC ads. ...prolly cuz she's purty.
How does this thing do with Win XP?
Has anyone posted any hands-on about that?
@xint: she could lead a few to EEErections
zing!
I'd mock matt's photoshop skills, but I probably couldn't do much better.
with the eee, it couldn't detect my canon connected via usb (only when I put the SD card in a reader). is there something I missed?
@xint: Perhaps the best name for her is "Britneee". That said
LEAVE BRITNEEE ALONE!!!
@discounteggroll: I'm resoundly the worst PSer of the entire Giz crew. But I use Paint.net so it's not my fault. *cough*
still not for me, but i bet apple will be coming up with a nice compact that's all flash based hardware and low power led backlit screens (possibly with touch).
On the next mockup of that girl, just add a great white shark in the background.
@EMoShunz: Yep, and for only $1000, because people *coughfanboyscough* will pay for it.
Eee does well on XP. Not the fastest on earth but decent. Basically faster than any P4M notebook ever and suitable for light to medium duty tasks. You won't be doing Photoshop or gaming on it tho... and the display is REALLY too low rez for XP. Remember the Vaio Picturebook? 1280x600 in an 8.9" display would be PERRRRRRRRRRRRRRFECT. I happen to have 3 of those LCDs... if anyone wants to try hacking their Eee and can show proof of ability (ergo, other mods of similar difficulty), the screens are yours. I just wanna see it done!
@TheCapt: $1000, if we are lucky.
Probably more.
@TheCapt: for $1000 i might just pay...provided the ssd was 64gb+ and 2gb+ ram.
heck, i am not so much an apple hardware fanboy (pretty and reliable as it is), but i sure as hell love the os, i use linux, bsd, xp, but none come close to os x. what does vista ultimate full versio cost new, maybe $400? i'd happily pay that for os x to be able to install it on every pc i own (but i would also expect a $600 version that comes with ilife and a 'family' license).
@EMoShunz: considering a 64gb ssd costs $1600 just in itself, i would guestimate that apple would charge you around $3000 for their final product. have fun with that one.
the point of the eeepc is that it is small and light, not that its a powerhouse computing machine. oh, and vista ultimate is $250. but heck, who needs to be accurate
@mwalker05: that's why i said 'might just pay' for $1000, cause it'd be a steal...it'll be 4 years before that is a reasonable price at least. i also said the eee was not for me, i know it is a niche market, and great in that market...i am not that niche.
@strider_mt2k:
It does brilliantly with XP, and I have the 4G model. Even better, with Windows installed to the Eee's correct resolution, everything's tailor made (sized) to the Eee's screen.
I used nLite and got a 700MB XP installation, and I have 2.4 GB on the main drive free, and 3.3 GB on my 4GB SDHC card. In summary, I have installed XP, all the apps I need, and still have tons of storage space. Everything runs perfectly, and boot times are pretty close to what they were with the original Xandros OS.
Eee's ship with all needed XP drivers on the accompanying CD.
No downside whatsoever.
@EMoShunz:
Doesn't ASUS make all the Apple notebooks?
So Apple reliability/build quality = ASUS's, correct?
@darex: i don't know if they make apple, but i can say i have never had any issues with asus motherboards or video cards
@darex:
@Buford T. Justice:
Thank you both for the feedback.
I might have to find a way to get one of these.
@EMoShunz: I've had good experiences with asus stuff as well.
I have no reason not to trust this, based on what I'm reading about it. (and folks have stripped it bare)
@ darex
im pretty sure that they just make the motherboards
I don't really care about more storage or Windows XP, I just want a 10" screen.
