A Fleeting Glimpse Inside Ben Heck's Modding Dungeon

Nilay from Engadget took a little road trip to visit Benjamin Heckendorn, gadget modder extraordinaire, in his natural habitat: Suburban Madison, Wisconsin.

Ben, a graphic designer by training, gives plenty of insight into his design philosophy—he calls the process "whoring it up"—and there's plenty of oddmod eye candy to longingly gaze at.

But let's cut straight to it: this is kind of disappointing. Why? Because for every interesting new fact we learn about Ben Heck, a myth is shattered. Fantastic myths, these were! For example, he—Herr Benjamin Heckendorn—doesn't have a German accent. At all! [Engadget]

Like his Xbox 360 laptop, it has a big 17-inch Gateway 1775W screen (1280 x 720 resolution). Watch his walk-through:

There's a storage nook for the power cord, front slot-loading Blu-ray drive, and an Iron Man Arc reactor-inspired fan grill. He also says it could have been made smaller, but he wanted to keep the big 17-inch display. Sexy! (More pics once Ben uploads them to his site).

Ben Heck's Latest Atari 800 Laptop Could Be His Best Yet

With the help of a GameCube power supply and the malleable magic hands of master modder Ben Heck, one lucky client can now play Buck Rogers and other classics on a positively portable Atari 800 laptop.

As Ben notes in the video, it's really the vintage Atari keyboard that sells this thing. The clickity clack is unmistakable, soothing and flashback inducing all in one—he even managed to get the thing to pop up at near the same angle as the original!

Some more specs, courtesy Ben's web site:

- Base unit is Atari XEGS motherboard, as usual.
- XE 130 RAM expansion built-in.
- Uses MyIDE circuitry and custom OS ROM to use a 2.5″ PATA hard drive. Very fast! You can check out Mr Atari's site here.
- Large 15″ screen, similar to the C64 laptop but this one is better looking and shinier (obviously important)
- Uses original, new-old-stock Atari 800 keyboard. This is probably the best keyboard in the history of computing, so it was worth including, despite the complications (see story)
- Flush-mount cartridge slot.
- Amazing old-school styling!

Oh, and there's the classic Ballblazer too:

Ben Heckendorn—true geek god amongst men—is back with revision 5 of his portable Xbox 360 console.

Though he's gutted the same Gateway 1775W laptop with 17-inch (1280 by 720) display, he writes that this design is from scratch, and has the following new features:

• Built-in Ethernet port, finally.
• Built-in WiFi adapter, as usual.
• Digital pushbutton volume control rather than a clunky knob. Different, better sounding audio amp
• Flush-mount DVD door and side panels (such as the memory card slots)
• IR sensor for the remote control.
• Two user USB ports.
• More air holes!
• Jasper motherboard.

Ben Heck's New Commodore 64 Laptop Going Up For Auction For Charity

Ben Heck, console modder extraordinaire, has just finished up his newest Commodore 64 laptop, and he's auctioning it off for charity.

It is very similar to the first C64 laptop I built, with the key difference being it uses the newer 1541-III Ultimate SD-card based storage solution / disk emulator. USB and Ethernet ports for this device are open and available on the front of the unit.

Want it? You'll need to wait until the auction goes live. All proceeds will benefit the American Cancer Society, so really, it'd be a good deed to buy it. Right?
Super Advantage Custom Xbox Controller Loses an Analog Stick, Gains Style

This may look like an old SNES gamepad, but oh, it isn't. No, it's a custom Xbox 360 gamepad. And sure, it lost an analog stick somewhere in its creation process, but it's still so damned cool.

Created by BenHeck.com forum member Hifeno, this slick little operator is perfectly suited for playing fighting games such as Street Fighter IV, but would probably get you iced pretty quickly in a game of, say, Call of Duty.

Not that you've got a shot at using this thing. It's a one-of-a-kind creation, not for sale, only for drooling over. Nothing is overlooked here—it's even got batteries.

Aside from the modified disc tray and 3.5 hour battery pack, the Dream Tablet also boasts external A/V connections, so you can always hook it up to a TV should you be so inclined. Sloppy Ben Heck apostles should take note, as this tablet follows the two core precepts of console modding:

1.) It is usable, and somehow better than the original
2.) It will no be confused for a homemade dirty bomb if you take it out in public

Heck took apart the kick pedal that came with GH4's drum set and used the piezoelectric switch in it, McGuyvered it into a little chamber with a diaphragm and added a tube that uses air to hit the switch. Voila, instant breath-controlled pedal!

Homemade Portable Playstation Won't Win Any Beauty Contests

This wooden PS1? Not so much.

Dubbed the PSOneP and created by a gentleman by the name of gamefreak11, this handheld Playstation is constructed mainly of balsa wood. It has a lid that houses the screen that flips up, and the most ghetto looking controller ever built into the bottom. But hey, it works, and that's certainly more than I can say about any portable console I've tried to cobble together. So kudos to you, gamefreak11, for knowing that the beauty of a portable console is not skin deep. [Ben Heck Forums]

Tiny Portable N64 is A Battery Away from Perfection

Modder extraordinaire Ben Heck is growing disciples like Chia Pets, and his forum poster SifuF's new Nintendo Sixtyfree Lite-R is an incredible little portable N64. We're sure he's made the Heckster proud.

The Sixtyfree Lite-R features a 5-inch screen, headphone jack, C-button stick, and the smallest case we've seen yet in a portable N64 mod. It's got all the buttons on a traditional N64 controller, which is no small feat, and manages to evoke the same toy-like plasticky design aesthetic as the original console. The only caveat? No batteries. The case is too small to hold an internal battery, although SifuF notes that you can clip an InfoLithium battery onto the back in addition to the standard 7.2v supply it was designed for. Take a gander at the gallery below, this is one incredible job. [Ben Heck Forums]

How To Buy the Cool-Running Xbox 360 'Jasper'

While Xbox 360s have become increasingly capable at handling their crippling heat defects, you still want the newest, coolest 360 you can buy. Right now, that's the "Jasper" edition, featuring a new 65nm GPU.

You should note, the GPU appears to be Jasper's major relevant revision, and it keeps the same huge heatsink found on the previous iteration—which is probably a good thing, actually. The other revision is that on-board memory stores NXE in the Jasper Xbox 360 Arcade. (It's unconfirmed as to whether or not such is true in the 60GB models of the 360.)

To pick up a Jasper of your own, look through the hole in the Xbox 360 box. You need to spot the number of amps used by the 12 volt rail—not that hard, we promise. You can spot that right next to the 12V delineation. Since the new system uses 12 amps, look for this number to read "12."

In other words, buy 12V-12 and everything is good. Buy 12V-14 and you are getting an earlier model. [Engadget]

I think this picture of Mr. Heckendorn fighting said marsupial in the back of a flatbed ("the most complex scene") kind of says it all—let us know when there's an Xbox 360 inside that robo-possum, Ben! Into the custom-built chassis he squeezed a 7-inch color widescreen display, a set of rechargeable batteries, combo driving/paddle controller and an A-V output. Though it's not exactly pocket-friendly (thanks to the 7800's large motherboard) it's still pretty awesome—check out the gallery. Ben's site has a detailed making-of story if you're interested. Now, if you excuse me... I'm off to reminisce about playing Pole Position.
One-Handed Guitar Hero, So Pirates Can Rock Like Ninjas

Modder Ben Heckendorn is more than a little obsessed with playing games one-handed (giggle, chuckle, milk through the nose, etc.) and his latest creation takes aim at Guitar Hero. It's a pedal that plugs into a modded guitar and replaces the controller's strum and whammy bars, requiring hand use only for the chords.

While stomping your way around DragonForce's Through the Fire and Flames doesn't sound anatomically correct, the pedal actually allows you to, for lack of a better term, foot-double-strum (both the up and down motions count as a string pluck).

To activate the whammy, the user lifts up on their heel to release the spring-loaded rear of the pedal. Yeah, it sounds a bit confusing, but Heckendorn makes it look pretty normal in this example video. Well, as normal as geeking out to Guitar Hero will ever look, at least. [Ben Heck]

We don't really have all the details since he hasn't announced the project yet, but the display looks like it's the one he used for the Xbox 360 Elite laptop, for a true 720p picture. He's obviously been leveling up his already formidable powers though, 'cause this is one of his most polished projects yet. There's another shot from the side after the jump. Update: Turns out, we stumbled onto a special project for Engadget to auction off for charity! If you'd like to own this bad boy, more details are here, or at Ben's site. Which is why he slathered much praise on the hardware modder in this Reuters profile. What would you want to know about the guy that turns two handed controllers into one handed ones? How about that he used to work for a sign-making business and doesn't actually play a whole lot of games, despite the love he gives to the accessories. Looking a lot easier to hold, it requires the use of your leg to control the right analog stick (and idea that sounds weirder than it probably actually feels). But the oddest design choice? And his latest accomplishment, squeezing an Xbox 360 Elite into a laptop, is his best revision yet. Because while he's made 360 laptops before, this is his first based upon the newer 65nm chipset (plus it features the Elite's larger 120GB hard drive).
Console modder Ben Heck generally takes formerly gigantic things and crams them into small packages. For his most recent project, he did the opposite: He stuck an Xbox 360 wireless controller into an original Xbox controller, which is monstrous in size. While yes, he added batteries and wireless capabilities to the original Xbox controller, it just doesn't feel as exciting as, say, an Xbox 360 laptop. I mean, who wants to go back to that terrible controller, anyways? This time, he's gone and stuffed an Atari AND an NES into a handheld portable, and dubbed it the NEStari. As usual, he goes through plenty of detail showing how he did it, and as usual, it's way too complicated for 99% of us to attempt on our own.
Benjamin Heckendorn's eDimensional Product is a 5.1 Headset

Remember that mystery product Benjamin Heckendorn was creating with eDimensional? Turns out it's a 5.1 gaming headset. The gadget, an AudioFX Pro 5+1 gaming headset, is a USB headset with a mic that has an integrated subwoofer and integrated 5.1 surround sound decoder. There's force feedback in there as well if you really like your head to vibrate.

We're looking forward to seeing this product, because if Ben Heckendorn's track record of making controllers, handhelds, and Xbox 360 laptops shows one thing, it's that he knows audio. – Jason Chen

Ben Heck's Portable Emulator

Everyone's favorite game console mad mod genius, Ben Heck, has a new project, and it's something that you and I might actually get a chance to play with for a change. Instead of a one-off like the Xbox 360 Laptop, he's designing the case for the GamePort, a handheld emulator designed to play retro games.

So he's designed it for a reputable company rather than just for fun, so we should be able to buy it, right? Well… maybe. According to the GamePort site, "the company that would have distributed the GamePort in stores perished after legal problems. Several other options are being discussed, including selling directly online." Awesome. Not exactly something to fill us with confidence, but who knows, maybe it'll go up for sale at some point. –Adam Frucci

Not content on making Xbox laptops that nobody but him can actually build, Ben Heck is teaming up with eDimensional (see our review of their PS2 SIXAXIS-ish gamepad) to release some kind of mystery product.

So far the page doesn't say what the product will be, but hopefully Ben will make enough money to buy some shirts that aren't schwag from trade shows and maybe get a non-combover haircut. You know, standard fare for electrical engineers. We should know—we're one too. – Jason Chen

PS360: Microsoft Controller, Meet Sony Controller

No, the world is not ending. But modder Ben Heck has taken the innards of a PS3 controller and magically fitted them into the Xbox 360 body. This includes the battery and USB charging port, making this "PS360" controller completely functional on your PS3. After once opening/destroying a Dual Shock with the hopes of fixing it, we appreciated this line from Heck himself:

It may not look like much but there was a good deal of finangling to get everything to fit and work correctly, especially the right analog stick.

Something about the SIXAXIS triggers force my hands into a constant state of almost dropping the controller. There would be a decent market if only Heck would sell this beautiful mod.

Benjamin Heckerdorn has been making consoles portable for a while, but who knew that he has been getting his paws dirty with console parts for seven years now. In honor of the sevenyeariversary of console modding he created a new revision to his Atari-playing VCSp portable, but it is a bit different this time around because you can actually buy it! Ben will be creating between 20 and 30 of these devices and selling them for around $300 each. –Travis Hudson

That man, the myth, the legend, Ben Heck, is at it again. Now he managed to cram the Atari 2600 into a somewhat small, handheld, portable device. Heck went a little old-school with this mod. It may be a little bulky, buy how else can you enjoy some Pitfall anywhere in the world. He also made ran a little Thurderdome action between the portable Atari 2600 (named the VCSp Rev7) and the other clamshell, handheld console, the Nintendo DS. This guy can churn out new console mods quicker than Jason Chen can put them down his pants. – Travis Hudson

If you are still trying to figure out that potato-chip conundrum like us, console-modder extraordinaire, Ben Heckendorm, has the solution. For some odd reason he decided to take the already near-perfect Xbox 360 controller and adapt it for other one-handed uses.
