Live from the Panasonic keynote, the 150-Inch plasma's first details are here, along with blurry shots:
•2k x 4k res, 4x the res of 1080p
•50% less power use via double luminance efficiency — big deal on a set this big.
•You can't afford this.
More details from an interview with Panasonic:
Speaking with an engineer from Panny's Japan TV operations, who revealed a few more bits:
•It's 220volts, so even if you stole it, you couldn't use it in your grand American home. Gary Merson knows more about the power consumption issues, and we'll link to his future story.
•The hardest thing about building a 150-inch TV over a 103-inch TV was the 2160x4096 pixel count on this monster. And the glass is twice as much surface area, so it requires a higher quality piece of glass to be strong enough (and no, it is not thinner).
•No word on contrast ratios, brightness, or weight. I will find out, though

That relatively itty bitty man next to the HDTV is the Panasonic president, and he must either be thinking "I want to lick my TV" or "Sharp sucks." Or both. The screen, at 16:9 ratio, has 9606.45 square inches, compared with 4977.89 square inches on Sharp's now dethroned king, the 108-inch LCD. Sizemodo between the loser, winner, a standard door, and a queen sized bed:

• Home hearth UI lets you to add a fireplace, windows, and wallpaper, etc. Your TV is now your wall, which is cool and sad.
• You can get video calls and use some apps (assuming you'd have a camera or something).
More details coming shortly. [Sizeasy]

Yes, but can you sleep on this like a queen-sized bed?
Didn't think so.
If I had this television and my Xbox360, all I'd ever really need is enough money to power them both, buy a game or two a year, and a bunch of ramen noodles and I think my life would be complete.
Boom.
Hmmm Ramen Noodles... Only here can you go from 150"plasma to Ramen... strangely they kinda' go hand in hand...
I'll wait for the Durabrand version at WalMart.
Masturbation. I thought this was the CONSUMER electronics show? Not the look how big my way-too-expensive-for-consumers-screen is. JUNK.
Now $500 retail 47" 1080p panels... that would have been sweet.
I'm stoked they are working on making bigger sets- maybe they'll consider releasing an affordable (Under 10K) 80" with some similar technology. I'd be happy to upgrade my 65" but not until the companies start making a reasonable upgrade path.
LoL Durabrand... 1/3 of the quality at half the cost!
Even if you could afford this, I highly doubt most families have a place to actually put this in thier homes. I have a very roomy house, and a large living room, but due to windows and doors do not have the wall real estate to put one of these without blocking a window or door. I suppose I could cover up my large picture window, but I like it too much. =)
Save yourself $50,000 and buy a nice projector. I generally project at about 130" and it looks as nice as my HDTV with high def material. Besides, I don't know how much juice it's using... my projector only uses something like 250 watts. Plus, you can stash your projector, take it on family visits, take it to Halo night at your friends, etc. Sure a projector might not be ideal in bright daylight, but if you're home to watch TV during the day, than you probably can't afford either item.
Meh... Call me when it's touchscreen.
Does it come with Leeloo and an autowash function? No? Call me when it does.
@hobobobo:
Details please. What projector are you using and how big a room?
awesome! look forward to see it from the national tv stations and lobby of major hotels.
Meh, call me when there's a version that produces a honey-like secretion that must be constantly licked clean.
150" Pr0n FTW!!
Japanese people are just really small. I bet it's a 32" he's standing in front of.
The bad part is finding something that will support the resolution.
I love my projector. At home it's 124" HD 1080i. It's an old InFocus X1 and it still looks amazing with my 360. Assassin's Creed, Mass Effect, Halo 3, Rock Band... it rules.
I bring it to my dorm for a 40ish" screen there. For that size maybe an LCD is cheaper, but for 124" less than a grand isn't so bad!
Projectors are only good if you have a dedicated room. My friends had one in their apartment but with company, and other things to do in the living room it just wasn't useful. Sure it was big but it had to be dark. He likes his new 60" TV, it's very good.
In my case we can leave some lights on in the room and it will still work. Plus I only use it for movies and games, not for TV.
I'm pretty sure it won't blend...
Hey, can you stop making bigger screens and start focusing on Virtual Reality?
To the person and picture window: don't cover it! It's already in the highest definition perceivable - sight.
Is elephant = life size?
@BloggyMcBlogBlog: At 60" screen is fine, but at 150", you're risking a sprain neck.
Wow. Just wow. The only thing I can say is: "now they've done it. Okay.....now what?" Only the bloody rich can put this sucker in their mansions. The law of diminishing returns must start to show some effect at this point. How much bigger does it need to go? I always thought that this was what a projector was for. I guess I'm kinda with JASON and HOBOBOBO. Cool, but I think it's time to move on.
I've always wanted to watch little people porn on a massive screen. I wanted to use the M-word, but South Park last night taught me how wrong that would have been.
VERY NICE!! how much...?
I think I just s#!t myself...
This had better upconvert, otherwise all our "next gen" gaming machines (Xbox 360/PS3) will look like crap on the 4k x 2k resolution.
So how do you fit that thing through the front door when they deliver it?
@akmed:
As they say if you have to ask............
Still though, ME WANT!
@robsaint:
If you can afford it than you can afford a house with a door thats big enough.
@robsaint:
You have to build a house around the tv.
Meh, panasonic makes horrible t.v's
I don't think bigger is better now. If this and the Pioneer Kuro were available to me for the same price i would totally go for the pioneer. I think that is the reason that this year at CES it was not about how big it is. It was how think it can get. Or how good the picture looks on it. Or something else that i don't know about.
Anyone there who steal it for me? I'm from Germany and we have 230 Volt here so running this Dino shouldn't be a problem ^^
"•It's 220 volts, so even if you stole it, you couldn't use it in your grand American home. Gary Merson knows more about the power consumption issues, and we'll link to his future story."
I call BS on this, I have 220 in my grand american home, besides, all you have to do is tie 2 110 volt outlets together and get an european style plug. Now shut up and help me lift this thing ;)
Not compatible with the Wii.... if you know what I mean ;P.
w.o.w.
Damn.. can't wait to plug my new HDDVD player into it...oh wait...
My head asplode
my dryer is 220 volts...
It was a pleasure to burn. It was a special pleasure to see things eaten, to see things blackened and changed. With the brass nozzle in his fists, with this great python spitting its venomous kerosene upon the world, the blood pounded in his head, and his hands were the hands of some amazing conductor playing all the symphonies of blazing and burning to bring down the tatters and charcoal ruins of history. With his symbolic helmet numbered 451 on his stolid head, and his eyes all orange flame with the thought of what came next, he flicked the igniter and the house jumped up in a gorging fire that burned the evening sky red and yellow and black.
He strode in a swarm of fireflies. He wanted above all, like the old joke, to shove a marshmallow on a stick in the furnace, while the flapping pigeon-winged books died on the porch and lawn of the house. While the books went up in sparkling whirls and blew away on a wind turned dark with burning. Montag grinned the fierce grin of all men singed and driven back by flame.
He knew that when he returned to the firehouse, he might wink at himself, a minstrel man, burnt-corked, in the mirror. Later, going to sleep, he would feel the fiery smile still gripped by his face muscles, in the dark. It never went away, that smile, it never ever went away, as long as he remembered.
Others have already stated this, but I wanted to chime in on the stupid statement:
"It's 220volts, so even if you stole it, you couldn't use it in your grand American home."
My dryer and oven are 220v just like everyone else's :-D
@packetsniffer: Great, this TV will fit great with its 1700 watt power draw in your basement or next to your dryer.
Anyone who wants a large screen should just get a projector. I have a 720p Epson projector, and it looks just as good (if not better) than my old Panasonic 720p 50" plasma. And yes, I can use it with the lights on. I use it day and night, and can always see the projector just fine. The key is to get a projector with high lumens (like 1500+, preferably 1700). I got my 720p projector for $1000, and figure that in a year the 1080p projectors will come down $1000, and I can get a 1080p then and sell my 720p. Yes, bulbs cost $200 - $300, but last about three years... so in my opinion if you can a room that you can set up a projector in (you need speakers, etc) then do so.
@robsaint: I'm thinking if you look at the Sizemodo, and compare the door to TV ratio, there should be just enough space, vertically, to squeeze it in. This would probably be the biggest TV that could actually fit in a standard door, just hope there aren't any corners to maneuver it around.
Remember the honking entertainment wall-unit furniture thing that Joy buys in "My name is Earl?" Crabman's attempts to shoehorn it into the trailer are as impressive as they are futile.
I wonder if you watch a p*orn movies on it. I wouldn't be interesting, i guess. :-D
This TV cured my AIDS
@hobobobo: if you had this in your house,HALO night would be at your place..
and you could probably charge admission.
