Only three days after Apple killed it, the JesusPhone walks again, but it doesn't talk again [UPDATE: actually it talks, see our breaking news]: By downgrading your firmware from 1.1.1 to 1.0.2 using the method below, all iPhones can get use of third party apps, but If you have an unlocked iPhone, there's still no way to dial. [Original article Saturday September 29 09:37PM EDT. Updated Sunday September 30 1:19AM EDT: Check our demo video.]
• Make sure you have a copy of the 1.0.2 firmware
iPhone1,1_1.0.2_1C28_Restore.ipsw
stored in:
youruser/library/iTunes/iPhone Software Updates
• Reboot iPhone holding the top button (power) and the home buttons.
• Release the top button 10 seconds after that, right after the screen goes dark. But keep the home (bottom) pressed for a while.
• The iPhone screen will appear to be off. Now start iTunes manually.
• iTunes will tell you it has found an iPhone in "restore mode."
• Press option key and then click the restore button.
• Select the 1.0.2 firmware .ipsw file from here:
youruser/library/iTunes/iPhone Software Updates
• The phone will restart and there will be an error out at the end. Don't worry. It was bound to happen (if the iPhone returns to Restore Mode instead of Activation Mode, then you may have to restore the 1.1.1 firmware, wipe all information in the iPhone and then repeat from above. But first, try to restart the iPhone.)
• Shutdown iTunes.
• Launch the latest iNDpendence (Mac-only for now.)
• Activate the phone using a expanded 1.0.2 file (to do that, make a copy of the 1.0.2 ipsw file, then select "Open with..." from the Finder's action menu and use BOMArchiveHelper.app (it will appear in the menu.) The ipsw are really .zip files.
• It will flash all sorts of errors, but don't worry.
• Activate the phone.
• It will show the SIM error but now the iPhone will work again with your Wi-Fi and your apps.
No, the unlock won't work and you won't be able to call, but all the rest will work again. [Hacint0sh]

Isn't this too complicated for people who play dumb?
@MattressMaven: Time will come , patience has a virtue. No worries, just hold your breath when DevTeam Strike Back! ;)

Any idea where to get it the windows version of PACAY from?

wait, it doesn't unlock for other sims? Only unbricks it? Right???
@DesiBoi: yup
>> Only three days after Apple killed it,
No, actually, it was those people stupid enough to apply 1.1.1 despite Apple's warnings that killed the phones. Let's get our facts straight, here, shall we? I have an unlocked, heavily modded 1.0.2 iPhone working just fine here.
@ruggels:
After what's been up here the past couple days, I wouldn't be surprised in the least bit if the Giz staff flip-flopped like that for the foreseeable future :-p
Any one have a link for a windows launch parcay?
@ruggels: Seems Giz should switch its imagery from the Death Star to the boulder from Raiders...
There are posts on dev team fourms that if you do ssh into the phone and run some files that YOU add beforehand, it downgrades the baseband, thus enabling the unlock to call... Any updates on that??
Ah, once again Gizmodo throws around the term "bricked" incorrectly. But I have to say I thought the title of the article was quite funny.
Ah, relief for the suckers that thought that updating their firmware would not affect their heavily modded iPhones. Who wants to bet that these people download the next firmware update after modding it again?
@Kaiser-Machead: No they couldn't be that dumb? Could they?
Alright guys I have made progree. the phone is not activated so I have all of the internet and ipod functionality,, but I am still unable to make phone calls even with my AT&T SIM...I get an invalid SIM message
Intelligence (or lack thereof) isn't the point. Jobs should write another 'open letter' granting a one-time reprieve so that all users who did NOT unlock their phones but DID install third party apps (some of which are exceptionally useful) can use those third party apps again. There would be a minimal financial hit to Apple (I'm sure their dev team has a host of apps ready to sell you through iTunes), good PR, "Apple makes good" on the front pages of the NYT and BBC.com-and David Pogue will have something nice to say. And AT&T should have no complaints, as long as VoIP apps are kept off the iPhone.
Ishan Bhattacharya, MD
now u need to flash the baseband to the old one and your all set.... U'll get calls too... Thats the hard part of the restore
I would assume Apple has no problem being hacked in this fashion. Thier hands are more tied to AT&T to make sure people can't hack into their network and make free calls - basically making them bankrupt in a world that can use VoIP technology.
"Think Different", Apple - make a VoIP iPhone. You guys would eventually have a monopoly on moibile voice communication.
@DesiBoi: Where can I get directions to do that?
[images.macnn.com]
I'm not the biggest fan of apple making it difficult to install third party apps on their phone, but it's not like you weren't warned.
Didn't anyone else chuckle at the fact that the call it the JesusPhone and it was "resurrected", so to speak, after 3 days?
Rawh@rawhead: @rawhead: There's a reason why we don't link to iPhone Dev Team's Wiki. Because they specifically tell us (and every journo, user and blog out here) that they DON'T want to get linked. They don't want their bandwidth to be hosed by a million readers.
So don't be a dickhead and tfsu. Post deleted. Next is banhammer.
Why was my post with the link to the iPhone Dev Wiki page removed? That is a much more useful page than the Hackint0sh boards, in that the pertinent information is organized.
Ha, I get a response just as I prepare the post.
And thanks for telling me to tfsu and calling me a dickhead for
(a) trying to help out other readers, by way of
(b) doing something that apparently they don't want you to, but is not at all made clear on their wiki page, and hence I had no way of knowing they don't want you to
Thanks a lot, fuck-wad. And if you're gonna give me the banhammer for my eye-for-an eye name calling, well, whatever floats your boat.
so glad i didn't buy into the iphone hype bullcrap.
i love my sony ericsson k800i :D
I chuckle at the fact that people go dicking around with their iPhones, hacking them 7 ways to hell and then complaining when things don't go their way. This includes Apple not helping out when they screw up.
Kinda sad you have to downgrade the iPhone to make it better... Why can't Apple just realize 3rd party apps will only make it better???
@rawhead: I agree with you, but there are a lot of people who bought their Iphone with 1.1.1 in it, or people like me, i'm traveling to NY (i'm from Argentina) and I was looking to buying and Iphone, now I'm praying for the new unlock...
@direktor:
Its also amazing how many people took the risk anyway, I mean Apple said the update might brick phones and a huge amount of people did it anyway without waiting for an update from the hack/dev teams.
This is why I hate Apple. They won't share the software and make overpriced hardware.
I sincerely hope with all of these technical recommendations, that otherwise responsible readers don't just follow what Gizmodo says to do... first using an Unlock solution (lost in the excitement) and not asking very important questions beforehand, and second, having NOT unlocked their phone, excitedly thinking that they can downgrade their iPhone, working on AT&T network, to firmware 1.0.2, only to find they've now made their phone not worked... after following the instructions as closely as a layman could.
It's interesting that hacking has become so mainstream, that its lept out of the Usenet Groups and IRC chats, and onto highly trafficed gadget blogs, encouraging mainstream users to play Cupertino Roulette with their $400-$600 investment.
It's bad enough I have to tell friends, "No, that deal IS too good to be true, don't buy OEM software" or "Please stop forwarding me these virus hoaxes, the one you sent isn't even REAL."
Now I have to brace myself to tell a friend, "No, you shouldn't have listened to that gadget website and installed the software unlock for your phone. Yes, I know they sounded confident and excited... yes, I know they made fun of the manufacturer for sending out warnings, but in the end, they'll just blame the manufacturer if there's a problem. They have a markedly different point-of-view on being responsible to their readers. At certain points, its more gratifying to be self-righteous than conscientious."
Come on Apple... I expect more. Just fucking accept that people want to mod their iPhones/iTouches...you're not keeping us from loading whatever we want on to our Mac computers, why should this be any different. Please don't behave like the cell phone providers who just want to create a closed ecoculture of shitty phone apps/ games, and begging you to buy ring tones.
My mini-rant is over, good night
"ecosystem"
@direktor:
"This includes Apple not helping out when they screw up."
Yeah-huh, opposed to all the other morally superior companies out there that would help out when their customers fuck with their hardware, void their warranty, and render it useless despite warnings.
Like....MS? No? Ok, well, like Sony of course.... NO? Nintendo? Hmph.
So which company out there WOULD help out these stupid customers if they were in Apple's shoes? (and to be clear, here I'm not talking about people who hacked their phones--hell, my iPhone is hacked--but those people who ignored Apple's warnings and applied the firmware update)
Well, I hope people have learned a valuable lesson, that once you hack your phone, you should rely solely on the third party vendors to cater to your every wish.
@Cleverboy: I agree. People should just enjoy their plaything and do with it what they please, but be wary of the consequences and not to be gullible sheep to the tech blog's shepherd.
@tamoko: As much as I agree that an open iPhone would be better, what you, I and others want is just not relevant. People are bitching mainly because they shot themselves in the foot thinking that they could have their cake and eat it to.
Dear gizmodo: This sort of echoes what cleverboy said. Please be more careful with your headlines. I understand that you think this is an exciting and important story. And with good cause. It is cool. But you need to get more of the story before you post headlines like "Breaking: How to Unbrick an iPhone, The Jesus Phone Has Risen". Do you see how misleading it is when you title an article like that but don't know the whole story? And then later you say "(Confirmed: Apps Are Back, but Unlocked Phones Still Can't Call) (UPDATED: now with video demo)" See, that's not the rising of the jesusphone at all. that's like a franken-birth. it has some of the parts of the phone; it's not a complete rising at all. In your zeal to get the scoop you have sacrificed proper investigation. Your retraction, headline change, and then the way you hid the original title belie your haste. And that'
