Just shortly after the first iPhone 1.1.1 jailbreak was released, the iPhone Dev Team follows up with a different method that can be incorporated into future graphical tools, unlike the previous one. While this one is still not quite ready for mass consumption since it still has the problem of having to use the iPHUC command line tool, it doesn't require you to swap your media directory in, so you can sync with iTunes immediately after you jailbreak. The important milestones reached by this release are the fact it actually activates your phone, and that the code for it is open so AppTapp and other developers can incorporate it into their own apps; thus eventually making it as easy to install third-party apps on 1.1.1 as it was on 1.0.2.
(WARNING: if you have used anySIM or iUnlock in your iPhone, don't upgrade to 1.1.1. You won't be able to apply this and you will brick your iPhone. Everyone else, including people who use TurboSIM or IPSF Paid solution, can do it.) [Official Jailbreak Download (Comes with Tutorial) - (Additional reporting by Jesús Díaz)]

...and there was much rejoicing...
Jah bless the hackers! Now the consumers can stick it to the Apple's evil software updates. Who's the cat now, bitch?
@methodlimp: Maybe Apple and the hackers would like to take turns being the cat...
C'mon Summerboard! Want my Summerboard back!
well what the hell ya know. i'm still wondering who the hell put up these stupid ron paul signs around my town.....jeebus gizmodo.
It seems like it'll be that way, and neither one will ever back down. I wasn't around for the PSP debacle, but that never seemed to end. As long as Apple puts out good enough marketing for people to want that iPhone, and lock it so you can't use it on another carrier, there will be war waged upon them by the genious hackers. BTW, if you haven't donated money to the iPhone dev. team, do so... they can stop fighting the war for us if they want to, so to sensure that we always have a nuke on our side, help those brothers and sisters from another mother out!
@Methodlimp
PSP hackers got so refined at the game of "cat and mouse" that the hacked the new slim PSP in about 24 hours. :P
Niacin looks like he has no friends there with those guys. Wonder what the backstory was, plagarism? 99% of the time thats the reason for discord among these groups (plagarism and lack of prop giving).
This is great, but I am starting to become concerned by lack of any developments regarding resetting the base band of phones that were unlocked, updated, and then bricked. Actually, its not the lack of development as much as it is the near silence on the topic. Oh and to all those who keep complaining about the use of the term brick to describe what the update did to unlocked phones, please do shut up. There has to be a better cause for you to direct your concern than policing the rest of us to ensure that no one uses a term that was made up in the first place in a slightly less than precise way.
Looks like Ambrosia's iToner is also back in business if you want ringtones without hacking. (Or a ringtone of a cat hacking.)
Glad to hear it!
I'll wait for an even BETTER alternative, when this is developed further.
so, I'm sitting here with a 1.0.2 anySim unlocked phone. I remember a vehement denial that anySim did permanent damage to the Radio firmware. So where is the repair utility? I really don't want to sound snarky or demanding, because I'm basically at the merci of the benevolent hackers. I'm just curious, if it's no big deal to reset the baseband to factory settings, what's the hold up?
When will apple learn. You can't win. You can draw out the fight, but you will never beat the hackers. Look at dvd, blueray/hd-dvd, psp et al... You have to hide the key somewhere in the device, it's just a matter of time till someone finds it.
I'm with AT&T but I haven't upgraded my plan so I'm using my old AT&T sim card in my phone. With this method, because I'm just "activating" the phone, my AT&T sim card will work anyways right? No brickin right?
I'm curious if these guys will create a "one click" tool that can do this similar to what 1.0.2 had.
If every time apple locks the phone down, the instructions to jailbreak get more and more complex, the jailbreaking audience is going to be limited to well-versed hackers.
Regardless, I hope that this puts some momentum back in the 3rd party development efforts.
@altarity:
I'm right there with you. I'm not going to start blaming the hackers as it was my choice to apply the hack and I knew the risks involved. However, purely in terms of appearance, the ones who are currently effed the most are those like us who used AnySIM to unlock our phones. And I hate to say this, but if I had to pick between the Dev Team and Apple who's more to blame for putting us in this pit hole? Well, the answer's kinda obvious.
A 'repair' to the V3 bb would be nice. As an 'early adopter' of the crack, I'm now stuck in "come get me TIFF exploiters!" mode...
Ahhh.. the joys of playing with toys...
Why dont you just buy a real phone?
