The new iPod Touch is out, complete with touchscreen, Coverflow and all the eye candy you can imagine, including a customizable dock. The big surprise: it has Wi-Fi, with Safari, YouTube and the iTunes Wi-Fi Music Store built-in. Unfortunately, it's not hard-drive based, just flash. The 8-mm-thick hardware design is still amazing —it's not like our mock-up, but we want to hold it, touch it and lick it just the same. Even more now that it is real.
[UPDATE: more pics, specs and prices after the jump]
Jobs's Safari and YouTube demo were extremely fast on the new Touch, with the videos streaming in real time. The fast specs: 22 hours of battery playing music, 5 hours of video and two sizes 8 and 16GB for $299 and $399.
They will be available worldwide in a few weeks.
Apple Unveils iPod touchRevolutionary Multi-touch Interface & Built-in Wi-Fi Wireless Networking
SAN FRANCISCO—September 5, 2007—Apple® today introduced the new iPod® touch featuring Apple's revolutionary multi-touch user interface that enables users to find and enjoy all of their music, videos and more on its gorgeous widescreen display with just the touch of a finger. First introduced on iPhone™, the multi-touch interface uses pioneering new software to present the perfect user interface for each application. The iPod touch also includes Wi-Fi wireless networking, the first on any iPod, and three amazing applications that use it—Safari™, the most advanced browser on any mobile device, lets users wirelessly view web pages just as they look on their computer, and features Google Search or Yahoo! oneSearch; Apple's YouTube application lets users wirelessly watch over 10 million free videos from the Internet's most popular video website; and the new iTunes® Wi-Fi Music Store lets users wirelessly browse, preview and buy songs and albums from the most popular online music store in the world. The iPod touch is an unbelievable 8 mm thin, and is priced starting at just $299.
"The iPod touch is a landmark iPod, ushering in a whole new generation of features based on its revolutionary multi-touch interface and built-in Wi-Fi wireless networking," said Steve Jobs, Apple's CEO. "People are going to be amazed at how thin it is and how much it does."
With its gorgeous 3.5-inch widescreen display, iPod touch is perfect for watching movies and TV shows, as well as viewing photos and album art. iPod touch has a built-in accelerometer that automatically senses when you rotate it into its landscape position. When you're in music, it automatically switches to Cover Flow™ so you can browse your music collection by album cover artwork with just a flick of a finger. When in Photos, it automatically displays the photo in its landscape aspect ratio; and when in Safari it displays the web page horizontally. iPod touch also has a built-in ambient light sensor that automatically adjusts the display's brightness. iPod touch features up to 22 hours of audio playback and up to five hours of video playback.
The iTunes Wi-Fi Music Store lets you browse the iTunes Top Ten lists of songs and albums overall or by genre, check out new releases and "What's Hot," or search for your favorite songs, albums or artists. You can preview any song for free, then purchase and download the ones you like directly onto your iPod touch over Wi-Fi. The music you download will be automatically uploaded into your iTunes library the next time you sync your iPod touch with your computer.
With Safari, the most advanced web browser ever on a portable device, you can see web pages the way they were meant to be seen, with the ability to zoom into any webpage with a tap of your finger. The Safari web browser includes built-in Google Search and Yahoo! oneSearch so you can quickly and easily find information you need. iPod touch also includes Apple's incredible YouTube application that allows you to access, browse and search for millions of free YouTube videos over Wi-Fi.
Apple today also announced an exclusive agreement with Starbucks that allows you to access the iTunes Wi-Fi Music Store for free in participating US Starbucks stores starting next month. When you enter a participating Starbucks location, your iPod touch, iPhone, or PC or Mac® running iTunes will automatically recognize the iTunes Wi-Fi Music Store. You can see what song is currently playing or has recently played in the store, and immediately preview, buy and download it over Wi-Fi.

Is it wireless?
yes it is wireless...
dear good lord i never really bought into all the iHype but jesus h. christ this is flippin amazing.
Uh. Picture?
@Pope John Peeps II:
Amen, pix now! This sounds good
/not iPod user
So, the iPhone with a bigger hard drive, no contract, and WiFi (the 'net service that actually works...)
Wow.
UNCONFIRMED: A reader just bought the 8GB iPhone for $399 and 4GB iPhone for $299 in an Apple store just now. Possible price drop?
WHAT!?!? i just bought one !!
OMG sweet! Now I gotta throw out my iPod w/ video, and my two Nanos so I can get this new one.
LOL, False! 4GB is $399 as of this morning.
Wi-Fi iTunes Store!!??!!
I am hugely...HUGELY disappointed that iPod touch only has 8GB and 16GB...how could they not debut this with at least the lowest storage capacity of the current iPod video?
Nice but was expecting more. It's just the iphone minus the phone.
Wow $399 for the 8GB one.. I actually want this.
theyre sacrificing storage for thickness. its only 8mm thin
Only 16GB? Too bad. Since we were given iPhones at work I was a little worried that I would be too tempted to get the new iPod with the touchscreen as well, but at only 16gig I'm not feeling it. Either put in at least 32gigs or add an SDHC slot. 16gigs is not nearly enough for a video machine. I'm sure it will sell really well, and after using the iPhone I can say that the interface is fantastic, but I think that they may have deliberately kept the memory spec low to avoid hurting the iPhone.
Bluetooth would be great for cellphone-video ipod connectivity, but yeah, that would be the iPhone.
Yeah seriously step up the storage. You have everything but the space!
iTouch?!! Anyone?!! No one?!!
Apple just got rid of the iPhone's main problem: The phone part, with its crappy AT&T service and contract. Just two months and my iPhone is obsolete. Thanks Apple.
Why don't they just release the iphone with everything there and an additional 16 gb option everywhere already?
Booooooo! Ill waitfor it to at least get 32gb. Ill take a thicker ipod with more storage...
@ipodee:
Cuz steve is a money hungry %$%^$#!@#!
Lame lame lame.
Oh dear apple have really mucked this one up. a 16gb flash itouch?? Why bother buying this and not an iphone - it simply isnt worth it. Why the hell did I wait since April to replace my 80gb ipod for that uninspired, unchanged piece of shite ipod classic!?
I won't replace my 30GB with the iPod Touch, and I don't really want to take a sideways step to the Classic. Looks like I'll stay with what I have until Touch gets more storage.
what the biggest is the 16gb, why even bother. might as well wait for an iphone when its available for verizon.
cue the price is right bust song.... buh bum buh bowwwwwwwww. i was drooling until the storage space photo came up. too bad. :(
Agreed. Either Touch gets at least 30gb or the iphone with 16gb or 32gb option, it just feels like a crippled iphone anyway...
Though some people might not want a phone + music/video player, buying the Touch is a bit of a dud...
@BAAAAAA
because wifi is everywhere, AT&T doesn't exist in my country so no iphone, this is cheaper, I don't need a camera, I have a cell phone, I can replace a $300 ipod if it breaks but replacing a $600 phone just to keep my contract is way too expensive
so all this hype was for a iphone minus the phone, and iphone os in the new ipods. i thought the new ipods would be similar to the ipod touch with bigger capacity, thanks steve for screwing this one up.
Well, this makes it abundantly clear how overpriced the iPhone is. 8GB Touch for $300, 8GB iPhone for $600. What does that extra $300 buy you? A phone. Seriously. It appears that the Touch has everything that the iPhone has except the phone part, and there's no way in hell that the crappy EDGE-only phone chipset in the iPhone is worth $300. Particularly not when you consider that you need to sign up for a 2-year contract.
Shuffle = Nothing
Nano = Meh
Classic = Meh
Touch = Interesting
iphone still does much more, you tube, google maps, stocks, a great cam, email,weather. wifi is great but as ive notice wifi isnt everywhere on the go. edge is slow but i get to see my full web pages and check out you tube no matter where i am. the new ipod is a step up, but for someone like me who has an 80gig ipod and a 8 gig iphone i could live with out it. but the new ipod is nice.
I am very, VERY disappointed with the iPod: Touch.
All it is is the iPhone without the GSM receiver. They then used that space to add WiFi and some more memory.
I would personally rather have it a little thicker and come with at least 30GBs.
It's better to just buy the iPhone which is probably what they're aiming for.
@crycry: Crycry, I can see your point but maxing the storage at 16gb is a shame for a good player...come dec, they will pull a stunt and announce a 32gb option and probably at same price point as the 16gb...it's possible.
looking at how apple negotiates terms for its iphone around the world and steve's being oblivious to 3g/3.5g, when the iphone is released around the world fully later, it's gonna be half-assed yet again
Worst Keynote Ever
-Comic Book Guy
Why doesn't Apple put these up on the store right as Steve is giving the pitch? They'd start selling them immediately (probably be sold out before he walked off stage - now that's effective marketing).
I don't see mention of any new stuff on the store. I wanted to see some "real" pictures of the Touch - probably get one or give one for Christmas (or both :-)
What about radio? All those updates and no radio...
@crycry:
@Crycry, Id rather just get a Nokia N81 with 8gb flash storage than the iphone actually. Was hoping for a 80gb ipod touch - cant believe they have gone down to 16gb - thats atrocious - especially for video and music together. I certainly will not be buying one now - I had my credit card at the ready before this conference.
I love all the iphone owners who are disappointed that the biggest ipod touch has "only" 16 GB.
seriously, what the hell do you people have on your ipods? everything you've ever listened to, once? i clean out my sansa e280 (8GB) every few months and i've yet to break 6 gigs, and thats with episodes of that japanese dog and monkey show, rockbox dualboot w/ a bunch of stuff... i just dont get it. how much fucking music do you need with you ALL the time? You dont need bigger ipods - you need higher standards for music.
Soooooo... it's an iPhone with more storage and less phone, right?
when will everyone stop sucking on Job's D?
Seriously, he's full of crap. Granted, I will admit that he is seriously good at what he does (aka con-artist), considering how much money he has suckered out of so many people in the world.
@Baaaaaa: yes come next year, nokia will unleash an S60 phone with full touchscreen interface ala iphone (as shown last week) and they will add more storage and stuff with 3.5g, videocalls and stuff, the iphone would be useless.
thats 16GB of Flash memory, BTW - dont you all know that hard drives are on their way out? AND, at 16GB, theres what competing? The creative Zen V Plus? THAT'S meh. this is cool.
Now if only i want holding out for a asus eee701 for my mobile internet stuff, i'd definately get one of these new ipods. seriously.
Well thats the end of the zune.
People seem to be forgetting the iPhone specs, it does have wi-fi and a camera. So the touch is an iPhone minus phone, bluetooth and camera. Major bummer on the storage, and the bluetooth and camera would have been cool. Ah well, back to looking at the Archos again...
Why God, why?! Why did they not couple the iPod Touch with the larger hard drives?
Now I have to continue to wait until Apple gets their shit together and realizes just how ultimate that would be.
80/160 iPod Touch would be such an easy sell.
I bet everyone that said $600 iPhone just ate their words: $399. 8GB. iPhone.
i dont think the this means the end to the zune.
there are many ipod uses defecting to other players.
@deadlizard: hahaha, I was thinking the SAME THING!
This is the iPhone minus the crappy ATT bullshit. It makes no phone calls, sends no texts...has no camera? Are there any other differences?
Finally! I've been waiting more than a year for this model to drop.
@Heatwave316: you listen to the radio? I mean, aside from NPR on the way home, what else that's decent is ever on?
@nutbastard: Personally I love having my entire music collection in my pocket. With tastes as diverse as mine, I can never tell what I'll want to listen to today.
You say people should have higher standards, maybe you need to broaden yours.
I thought Flash memory was preferred over hard drives? Why is it 'unfortunately' not a hard drive? Just the size?
As someone who's biggest iPod is a second gen Mini, I'm fairly impressed with the Touch. Heck I'm impressed with the new Video Nano. I am not one of those people who need a month's worth of music, literally at my fingertips at any given time.
I've always thought as long as the player can hold more music than it can play in one battery charge, it's great!
My kingdom for bluetooth.
I'm excited. No way in hell would I switch to AT&T with their lousy service. My current cell provider has always given me great customer service and fairly good coverage.
But having an iPod Touch than can browse the real internet (not that crappy mobile web) and play music would be totally hot. And for me, 16 GB is plenty. Frankly I don't carry around my whole MP3 library as is anyway... that's what my desktop is for.
SERIOUSLY!
NO BLUETOOTH YET
WFT STEVE!
why cant the awesome have everything

My mom heard me breathing heavy as I was looking at this, she got suspicious until I showed her the screen... didn't surprise her at all.
Cmon, IllPacino, if this we're a lunch, we'd be happy with a lunchbox while you'd wanna haul along the entire refrigerator!
Just because we don't want to dig through an entire fridge to decide what's for lunch, 2 seconds before lunch, doesn't mean we don't have a diverse palatte.
